I was gonna buy the vortex mixer as that's the only thing I don't own of the list yet and need. Do you have an affiliate link for Germany for it? I couldnt find it in the description
Plastic glue protip! Most plastic glues (all the ones you showed in this video) are a solution of plastic (polystyrene) in butyl acetate, sometimes with some other add-ons. Which means you can revive a "dried" plastic glue - usually becoming half a bottle of transparent plastic - just by adding butyl acetate. And that "sprue goo" is therefore the same solution but with more polystyrene in less solvent. You can also make your own plastic glue by simply dissolvin sprue leftovers (transparent polystyrene for that professional transparent look) in butyl acetate. Which costs close to nothing, 1 Liter for 10 Euros in my local chemistry store.
My biggest problem with this type of videos is that none of the linked products are directly available in Germany and that product names, brands and descriptions can vary a TON. You adding links for Germany is a BLESSING. THANK YOU!!!
u should make a video painting the same miniatures in good lighting conditions VS bad lighting conditions, it would be interesting if it actually impacts the quality of the end result
just as a side note: thank you so much for putting the affiliate links for UK and DE out there as well, I'm always lost when youtubers only put US links in the description!
@@SquidmarMiniatures I'd consider using the affiliate links if there was one for Canada. Instead, I use the link to find the product name and then search for it on the Canadian site. On occasion, it makes sense for me to order through the American site, but generally I will just find an alternative on the Canadian site.
After 4 years of hobbying under two ordinary desk lamps, I went and bought an LED daylight lamp just a few days ago, and OH. MY. GOD. It is the biggest quality of life upgrade you can make in this hobby, hands down. It made such a difference in my painting that I think these lamps should be discussed as a must-have, and not just a strong recomendation. All you noobs out there, get yourselves one of these lamps asap, before you get an airbrush!
I bought an LED shop light from the local hardware store. It's insanely bright and as pure white light as you can get. Probably overkill, but it's nice having a light that hangs from the ceiling and not right in front of my face. Also, it was fairly cheap. It was life changing.
I was going to but then quickly noticed that the desk lamp links are for a completely different lamp than Squidmar uses and reccommends in the video (you can tell by the buttons on top).
Meh, I paint for the table top and so the minis need to look like they would be seen in the gaming place, in these parts that means yellow, dim liggt and sweat.
With the nail files I would also add the nail buffing blocks. You can smooth things out to a mirror finish if you want with those. They might not be the best shape to get into places, but they do finish off a model very well. They also work extremely well for stropping knife blades on to a proper razor edge.
Thanks for talking about Ergonomics! So many painters hunched over their work💀 The vortex mixer alone is a requirement for me to keep my repetitive stress injury from flaring up.
A stress- and powerball are simple, but amazing recommendations! The German affiliate links are also much appreciated =) Thank you very much and stay save and healthy!
Protip that I have NEVER SEEN YOU TALK ABOUT: superglue and epoxy putties, such as kneadatite and apoxie sculpt, are reactive. They will cause the other to dry EXTREMELY quickly, acting as an activator. This can be really useful for a lot of builds.
Great video providing a lot of useful info, one thing to note however concerning the lighting part: Accurate color rendering is not primarily dependent on light temperature (2700-6500K) but on the Color Rendering Index of the light source known as CRI ranging from 0 to 100 Anything above 90 (100 being the sun itself) is considered adequate for artistic purposes, either painting or displaying works of art Hope that helps...
Great point! The lamps he links to are CRI 80. I'm not sure what the CRI is the lamps he uses in the video because they are different than the linked ones and I'd be curious to know.
Hey Emil, use Tamiya airbrush cleaer instead of their plastic glue for sprue glue (Just use the glass container) They are one and the same - Glue and Airbrush cleaner:D
This should be required viewing for new hobbyists... It took me a year+ of painting to figure these things out on my own, and I can't live without any of them now. Great video.
These were incredibly useful suggestions, and I found myself agreeing with the vast majority of these recommendations. And yes, finding a place to store your minis is important, so I'm with Emil lads.
honestly a good pair of clippers was the first "big" hobby purchase I made haha. A lot of my friends swear by God Hands, but honestly I prefer my trusty Tamiya 74035, having tried both and probably at least 20 or 30 others. So good I've bought 3 pairs over the years, and will probably never buy a different kind as long as Tamiya keeps making them!
At Berklee we had numerous people that required surgery on their hands from extensive use of stress balls and hand strengthening tools ending their careers as musicians. Use these sparingly.
Not apparently. It's confirmed and an old technique. It's just solvents dissolving the plastic and the same concept as how the glue works anyways. Doesn't glue as much as weld/fuse the pieces together. For something neat, search for spruegoo manta.
Yes and no. Acetone can dissolve the sprue but it isn't very good, it gives a very gloopy/thick solution, which you might like or not. Using other solvents can give a thinner sprue glue. Tamiya Extra Thin contains 50/50 Acetone and Butyl Acetone and Citadel and Revel plastic glues contain 100% butyl acetone. The butyl acetone is a much better solvent for the sprue than acetone. Goobertown Hobbies has a great video on plastic cements and how they work checmically. He dissolved some sprue in different solvents, including acetone, and you can see the difference.
y0, i'd like to see airbrush maintenance behind the scenes.. I know you've talked about how to maintain your airbrush but you never actually showed how you do it when you change colors or clean it out for storage.
I have some of the GSW UV resin but never thought of using it for gluing. I have a couple of Forgeworld hierodule models to build but wasn't sure if superglue would be strong enough and didn't fancy messing about with 2 part epoxy.
I’ve been looking into the vortex mixer. Do you have a link for that. I’ve been looking around but seems it’s only china shops I find with 20-30 days delivery time.
So, can you link to the actual desk lamp you use and show in the video? None of the three links you provide are for the lamp you use, as can be easily deduced since the lamps you use have four buttons and the lamps you link to have only a single button. I'm not sure why you'd show one lamp and then link to another unless maybe it has to do with you not making money off of the affiliate links to the actual lamp?
Du borde ju ta med var vi svenskar kan köpa prylar! Ser ut som du har en del prylar från biltema förutom superlimmet. Det där basningsmaterialet till exempel, fiber-grejen? Vad heter det?
Hi Emil, sorry 1 question:the lamp you put the amazon link in the description is already provided with 6500k light or it is necessary to change it?In such a case where did you buy the led/bulb?thank you for an answer
If you want some really good nippers, look out for Kotobukiya Godhand. They're basically heralded as the second coming of jesus by the gunpla community. I have a pair myself that I use for finer work and they're amazing. Just be careful to only use them on sprues and NO CLEAR PLASTIC or you'll damage the blades.
I can't find any vortex mixer (or any other paint shaker) that is shipped in EU. All I'm getting are US or UK links for amazon. Can someone help please!
They cause injuries. Most vortex mixers rely on downward pressure from an individual's fingers to activate the device. The direct contact allows vibrations to travel up through the hands and cause fatigue, vascular damage, and nerve damage. Look into vibration white finger for more examples.
The problem with hobby chairs is that they wouldn't really help during painting and building warhammer, cause the problem is not really the sitting surface but the bent forward back, giving you an unfavourable ergonomical position. A backless chair and minding having a straight back and learning to hold the minatures in different positions would be the free exchange for a 120$ chair. Sorry, it's just that I don't like "undercover ads"
I just got interested in Warhammer. Tools and products that are geared toward this hobby are in many cases over priced and poorly designed, if not just junk. In many cases these tools can be had in high quality at much lower prices. Army Painter flush cutter much? I bought one made by MILWAUKEE that was CHEAPER. If you know anything about tools, you know that this is absurd.
Is sprue goo safe? Melting plastic in a pot containing a fluid that already gives off questionable vapors sounds like a recipe for issues in a poorly ventilated hobby room.
I have a hand pump ca glue activator but what I usually end up doing is either using the straw to dab where I want to activator to go, or a makeup sponge to dab tiny amounts of it. The spray is typically not good for our use
@@MightyMax2756 I've experience both, and I find the pump type actually makes the glue more brittle than the spray. It's good for plastics though, as it lack the solvents in the spray version and therefore doesn't react as much with plastics. On the other hand, you really shouldn't be gluing on painted surfaces when possible, and when you absolutely need to, this is where having the wider toolbox with different tools that achieve the same result with different methods work nicely to allow one to tailor their approach.
Great stuff! I l throw in a tip for another great super glue activator i cant build without: baking soda. Either when sprinkled on superglue it hardens instantly and can be used to fill gaps very easily.
a proper chair really can't be understated, especially if you also work form home. you end up sitting in the same chair for work and then hobby time and it's wild how much damage it can do to you. I bought a refurbished ergonomic office chair from a company that recycles office equipment from offices that close down. Made a huuuuuuuge difference.
I got my new Airbrush with your sweet logo all over it from HArder and Steenbeck. Loving it. Would love to see you give us all that bought it a quick tutorial on how to use, break down, and washing tips. I have your brushes and your airbrush... when are you releasing your own paints... hahaha, love the channel, keep it up
You can use your spit as a super glue activator. Super glue was originally designed to bond with proteins in your skin to close superficial wounds quickly (on the battlefield) and there is enough of that protein in your spit to activate the glue.
Chair wisw you really dont want the gamer chairs anyway.. there all basically repurposed around a race car bucket seat, they have poor lumbar support often relying on a pillow and poor neck support often relying on a pillow. That cheap seat you show is 1000x's better for your back and neck. It has proper back support and the neck is designed right.
