We took a trip down to see 50% of the hosts of our favourite podcast, who also happen to drive The Volks Heritage Railway in Brighton along the coast.

A few of the usual quick disclaimers:
1) The set up for our natter wasn't ideal, as the intention was to natter outside. As you will note, it was way too windy.
2) With that in mind, sorry about the wind on any outside clip!
3) Please feel free to pause any of the text, I didn't want to video to be dragged out by that so please do feel free to hit that pause button!
4) Excuse my hair which was at DefCon level 2.
Attributes and thanks.

Great video of a railway that was a huge part of my earliest childhood memories! It’s also now a great pictorial record of what Black Rock was like before the gigantic changes that are taking place there at the moment as part of the regeneration programme!

Excellent! I somehow missed this. The VER is wonderful. The present Manager Stuart Strong is quite probably the person who I have known longest outside my family. As a child I lived in a house on Dyke Road in Brighton where Magnus Volk lived. I am also privileged to know and to have known several members of the Volk family. Including his grandson Bernard who like me is a member of the The World Ship Society. Dad knew Magnus as a child through my Grandfather who was a close friend. As a Genuine Brightonian I am very proud of the VER (OK I have my views on how it should be preserved). As for stations and halts the line has had several over years. The present Blackrock Station is actually the third at this location. All of them being on slightly different sites. Also every time a new station was built at Blackrock the line was cutback slightly. With out going into tedious details. The original 1883 line was a short lived 2' gauge line. The present line has its origins in the 1884 line. Which originally ran from station adjacent to the entrance to the Aquarium close to where the Palace Pier would later be built. Running up to the Banjo Groyne just beyond the present Depot and Car Shed. This is where the Brighton & Rottingdean Seashore Electric Tramroad had its western most station. The B&RSET only ever had three stations/ boarding piers. Banjo Groyne (for The VER). Ovingdean. Rottingdean. The B&RSET power station was on the pier at Rottingdean) The B&RSET had a short life operating between 1896 and 1901. Following it demise Brighton Corporation allowed Magnus to extend the line to Blackrock. So the line was at its longest between 1901 and 1930. Have you got a copy of the Plateway Press book on the line?

No closed stations, but neither of the outer termini are quite where they were originally sited though...the Palace Pier at one end and the Marina at the other have both affected the railway that much...not so sure about the Peter Pan in the middle though! I was born and brought up in Brighton, lived there until my thirties, so it was great to see you in my old home town!

I visited Brighton for the first time last year and stayed on a campsite near Brighton Marina. Just a wander down the hill and then turn left for Asda, or right for Black Rock Station ..... First ride on Volk's Electric Railway was actually back to the tent with a huge pile of shopping! You couldn't build anything like it nowdays .....
