In this video, we will be analyzing Carrie Bradshaw's fashion from Sex & The City to explore how Carrie Bradshaw changed women's relationship with fashion forever. There is no fictional fashion icon more à la mode than Miss Carrie Bradshaw herself, who states Vogue "fed" her more. However, behind the kitschy vintage thrifts sported with haute couture on girl's nights out in the bustling urban jungle is a woman struggling with self-esteem and at odds with her own identity, glamorized by the covetable Carrie Bradshaw lifestyle that left viewers wanting more. #SexAndTheCity
By breaking down Carries’s style by going over the key components of some of her most iconic looks and delving into her fashion sense in relation to her mental state, we will gain a deeper understanding of how Sex & the City changed the way fashion is utilized in real life, how we see others, and even ourselves as we look in the mirror to get dressed each day. #fashionpsychology

My main problem is that she seems to work a couple hours a week at most, but then dresses like she has the salary of 3 successful people. Not to mention living expenses in NY. We all could be as stylish as her if magically we had thousands of dollars to throw at our wardrobe seemingly every month.

Dear Michelle, Please do not change the sound of your voice. I am a huge fan of the way you speak. Your voice may not be usual (at least to me) but it fits with your aura. It definitely lends a very elegant vibe to your videos that I don't see much anywhere else. Personally, I think is a part of you that you should be proud of. It is something that makes you different and interesting. And very beautiful too. Respectfully, Jinn

Haven't finished yet, but I'm going to have to reject the idea Carrie ruined my relationship to fashion. I feel that most people aren't stylish and don't have a personal style unique to themselves. Most people really just do what everyone else is doing. They wear what is trendy/popular, what the runway tells them, what influencers tell them. Most people are TERRIFIED to dress differently, stand out, rebel, or be weird and it shows. Carrie is a true maverick. She knows exactly what her style is and no-one else can do it. I admire that and do the same thing. I've never once stepped outside and seen a copy of my outfit. Most people are basically clones of those around them (family, friends, etc). When you stand out in your fashion, you're like a red rose in a sea of white daisies. The only people threatened by a swan are the boring ducks. If her powerful form of self-expression "ruins" someone's relationship to fashion i can't imagine they had any fashionable point of view in the first place. Even if i don't get some of her outfits, i can still respect the stylistic individuality and the bravery/fun she's having with it. Carrie was a trendsetter. The masses follow trends because they can't think for themselves. Icons set the trends and do what they want. Just look at all the ridiculous tiktok "aesthetic" videos. The viewers literally watch these videos, buy the entire wardrobe in the videos, and then feel "stylish." They're copy cats. It has no personality or individuality. It's more like a costume, which will inevitably be thrown away and replaced with the next popular trend the following month. This isn't something a truly stylish person would ever do since their style comes from within and anything they wear will have their signature mark.

I myself have adopted some of her outfits. The meaning is not to copy a style literally but to adapt to your own style and personality. You don't have to buy expensive brands to get an exclusive style. You can combine cheap and expensive with second hand, for example. Despite the flamboyant clothing style, her interior design of the home is completely opposite. Calm, natural colors such as brown, beige, creamy white as a base, wooden furniture, leather. It can say a lot about a person's personality! Even though I don't like several of her character's traits like smoking, waste of money she doesn't have, way she treats her girlfriends and destructive immaturity, I've had a lot of fun with SATC.

Good observation! Very often, the character is a conflictual center for the writers' vision, the costume designer and the set designer works, as well as the actress' acting job and the director's vision. The integration of designer fashion in a script and on a set for a serie can be quite a challenge. It's normal to choose some outfits for ourselves based on our preferences and how suitable we perceive them to be for our own fashion taste. These combinations you suggest are usually how the costume designers work, with great talent, on smaller budget. Often, the brands will also lend some clothes from recent collections to get them showcased. Contracts are signed too. If actresses' agents negociate with certain brands, it will translates into contracts, gifts and checks. I personally like to inform myself on the caracteristics of the models, the influences of the aesthetics, but as fashion and spaces are also made to be experienced and worn, the material culture we evolve is also supported by our understanding of its codes and uses. Not only by what is communicated on a visual level.

Ignore the haters. I love the way you speak. You can’t please everyone being yourself, nor should you. Everyone who puts themselves in the public eye will get criticism. Some can be constructive but most will be judgmental. It’s best to be discerning and delete comments that aren’t generating good will, especially when you’ve spent hours on quality work.

Thank you for articulating the link between her fashion and her personality. Carrie Bradshaw definitely had a childish way of doing life. The time she farted in bed for example and got completely mortified by it wa the silliest reaction that showed the severe depth of her insecurity and inability to just relax and be a person. She was so invested in playing a certain character to Big and she had a collapse of self esteem when he married Natasha, comparing herself unfavourably to his choice. She was someone who should have sat in a therapist's chair for longer and her penchant to shop away negative emotions should have been addressed.

I especially appreciate how you highlighted the downsides of consumption as coping -in the era of internet shopping, we don't have the barriers of physical place to slow us down. As usual, your angle to analyse the character brings a lot to the table. Thanks again for all of your work. It's interesting to see how some characters represent a static personality, with a dynamic sense of fashion, while others can have dynamic personalities with a more static, traditional or classic clothing design. There is a true expressivity to achieve within the limits of our budget and ethics/morals to help us to convey meaning borrowing from culture and fashion.

yeh, I find the affectation very offputting to the point of being unwatchable...I have never made it through a video, I have to skip or put it on mute with the captions on. People will watch if the message has value - the creator put in work & it is interesting & well researched, or if it is entertaining....a very forced & pretentious delivery style is unnecessary & offputting. It sounds like a put on speech pattern to appear cultured, I get folk may need to code switch for their occupation, but when it's your own youtube channel, folk should be able to speak in their natural manner, when the forced manner, tone and a speech continues here, I wonder who is it for?
@sophierosebisou8420
@sophierosebisou8420 10 месяцев назад
Maybe it is her normal voice? After being a subscriber of this channel and watching all her videos, the format has changed from when I first discovered it, as she now voices the content herself. She has always been consistent in her presentation style, tone of voice and analysis of fashion. No code switching here that I can detect. As a trained psychotherapist for over 40 years and familiar with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, this is the first time I have ever seen it used in relation to fashion (which was my career ten years prior)...but, maybe you have different experiences with the psychology of fashion, if you do, please share because it fascinates me! Because of the psychological component of her content, I find her channel refreshing and more enlightening than the run of the mill ordinary fashion videos featuring dozens of “Haul Unboxing”, or dictating what style of blazer is on “trend”, how to tuck a sweater/buttondown/tee shirt/whatever, OR being told what NOT to wear, especially at my age. I think if you give her channel a chance, you may get more familiar with her delivery and be able to enjoy it more. Not picking a fight, but I’ve noticed in my past experiences with people or subjects that irritate me, if I deep dive into what makes me feel that way, I come to find they become some of my favorite people or experiences. With some other content creators, I’ve adjusted to their deliveries and now really enjoy their channels. Hope you can stick it out! 😘
