This is why i hate jobs applications and job interviews. They always assume you want a career in whatever field their job is in. And they always assume you REALLY want that job for some reason other than money. I really want to just tell them that I don’t want the job they are offering, I just want a job so i can eat and pay my bills.

I would hire you if I owned a company because honesty often reveals character and hard work. A manager rarely says you are here to work, get paid, and pay your bills, so let's do it. Only sales managers say that to their sales dept, but then they hold back all bonuses raise,s and promotions, so I don't work in sales unless the base pays enough to compensate for the commission they won't give me that I earned because they steal hours and deliver from payroll. Take admin access to payroll and schedule away from managers and save the company. Let an AI bot do it instead, and everyone will get paid. If not, then own a business because jobs are for the birds under managerial slavery.

I don’t remember ever wanting a career. Even now I don’t want a career. I want a job that pays as much as possible for as little effort as possible. My passion is reading books, writing, and walking in the woods and visiting new places, meeting new people. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. So I’ve worked really hard to progress in an industry I don’t particularly feel excited about but has now rewarded me with being very good at it and being able to “demand” things that employers will actually give me. So now I work a part time home office job and I get paid very well compared to the effort I put in (it’s taken a lot of years hard effort to be in a position where I can do the thing standing on my head). The people are nice, the job’s easy, I hang out with my dog in my office until the bell goes at 4pm and then the rest is mine. And this is fine for me. It’s enough.

You don't have to find significant purpose in your job to enjoy it. I'm in the military (corpsman), the "fulfillment" I found was more related to the relationships I formed with the people around me, not the job itself, which is extremely repetitive and not like what you see in Hollywood. I found pleasure in basic and simple jobs too. But don't put too much weight on it, nurture the other parts of you (social life, romance, hobbies, religion, etc) to find your whole purpose, don't just rely on your career, that's one puzzle piece.

As a med student, I can assure you that 60 hour work weeks are what's considered cushy hours. 80 hours are the norm for some surgeons and many residents. We are simply not paid or treated well enough for the amount of difficulty it takes to become a doctor.

Doctors aren't treated or paid well enough? I don't mean to assume anything, but from my perspective American doctors make A LOT compared to where I live. Especially surgeons. @@user-gv5hm8po6b Because you, like most of the hoi polloi, have no idea how medical training in the US works. Compared to Europe our schooling is generally longer, more expensive, significantly more competitive, and entails far more abuse on the actual job. There are certainly exceptions, but our European counterparts enjoy laxer hours, laxer standards, and a healthcare system that doesn't try to squeeze out every penny from doctors and patients. Also, that high pay you're talking about for surgeons is a joke. Surgery residencies last anywhere from 5-7+ years. That's 4 years undergrad, 4 years med school and that residency number only to be in a position where you typically make 400-600k on average. I became a lead singer for Cirque du Soleil years ago, and this could not be more accurate. Worked my ass off to get there my entire life. Did not have time to see friends from school really, and didn’t party in my teenage years, which I didnt mind, because I was very focus and disciplined. I cannot even start to tell you how much Ive sacrificed indeed, it has been difficult, competitive and stressful at times ITS CRAZY to do that, I’ve often thought. I thought of quitting so many times just cause its been too much sometimes, the travelling every week, not seeing my close ones, missing almost all the important events in there lives. I cried so many times and burned out myself twice. I’ve even done shows with broken bones. But somehow. I’VE NEVER FELT LIKE IT WAS A JOB, and SACRIFICES DIDNT FEEL AS BAD as they were because I was PASSIONATE about it. I just feel like Im doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing! Im good at it and know it so well. I had to find a job during the two years pandemic. And you know what happened? Turned out… as much as I woukd really want to be with my family all year long and just have a quiet job.. It made me miserable! Having a job got me depressed and sick. At the end of two years… I knew I wouldnt be able to keep having a job. Because I didnt feel accomplished, i didnt feel particularly great at it, I wasnt able to perform well, cause I just didnt have the interest for it. It clearly wasn’t my calling. I’m so proud of myself and especially greatful for everything I’ve accomplished career wise so far. But I’m also 37 years old now. And I haven’t had the chance to have any long term relationships. Travelling made it difficult to build something with someone. To have a strong and solid foundation, while I always had to go! I’m the eldest of three girls. Im the big sister and always loved taking care of everyone. I’ve also always wanted to have kids, since I was a teenager. We all thought I would have been the first to marry, settle down and have kids and that’s it. The weirdest part is that despite the fact that I started doing it very young, I was always doing it as a hobby, for FUN! I could have never guessed in a million years at the time that I would end up singing for a living for real! Because I didnt have to think about it as “maybe” a career before I was 21 and had to decide what to study in college. And even then - choosing to study music and give a shot at a career as a singer, was a bold move. I come from a very small village and no one did that professionally in my family. So I had no expections! No idea of anything hahaha. So, I totally relate to what he is saying.

Set your comfort bar as low as possible (women tend to drive the cost of this bar up)… then find a job or craft that allows you to make that necessary income but also maximizes your free time…. Then enjoy life. The most peaceful time in my life was landscaping in the summers during college years.

It’s depressing to hear because it informs us that life is meaningless but yeah. The sickening reality is that human beings are just raised as cattle to be fed to the higher ups for power to remain control over society. Most of what we goddamn learn in school is shit we don’t even use in the real world. How disgusting is that? We’re just brainwashed and farmed as cattle in school before we graduate and all the jobs out there are there to put your neck on a leash just to work minimum wage and go nowhere in life. The education system is rigged and whether you pass or fail school doesn’t matter because you’re still raised as cows to work low paying jobs anyways and you’re enslaved to them as part of society. It’s all done this way because the government owns your ass and it’s just to keep everything in balance under their evil control and so they continue living the comfortable lifestyles they live on top. I was an honor roll student in high school and 3 years after I graduated, I’m merely a parking lot associate at Home Depot. What a complete joke society is.

To me, a career profession is something that surrounds your whole life, it’s who you are, it’s more than just the role you fill for 40 hours a week. Most people like to think they’d have a career, until they realise how much of themselves and their lives they have to give up to obtain it, then they realise they’d actually rather have weekends off or be able to spend time doing things they enjoy, and I don’t blame them.

Guess this is where I feel extremely lucky to be part of that 2% I genuinely love what I do and I’ve very close bonds with my team, hell I even just helped one of my coworkers mow their lawn not even two hours ago. They’ve brought their daughter over to play with my cats, and even helped me move into my current house last fall. On top of that, I have a very healthy work/life balance, with unlimited PTO and a boss who literally doesn’t care when I log on or how long I’m on at a time as long as my work is done and I’m meeting project deadlines. Now work, well work is work, and there’s always going to be good days and bad days. There’s always going to be tasks that feel menial that you’ll encounter periodically, but fundamentally, I’m ecstatic to do what I do and I never dread the next workday. My advice would be to anyone looking to find a “career”, do something that you genuinely enjoy. Put your all into it, cultivate your skills and hone your craft, and you will flourish and eventually achieve the lifestyle you desire. Why? Because you’ll do whatever is necessary to always climb that next rung up the ladder. You’ll never be complacent. You’ll succeed.

Tough truths -too often overlooked or even deliberately suppressed- about the world of work.

I'm 20 Yrs old and I have a career. At one point I was in school getting my certifications for the job I was already doing. I would wake up at 7:30 and get home between 12 and 2 A.M. the next day. I'm an A&P and I love Aviation with such a passion that some days on my day off I choose to work on aircraft because I genuinely enjoy it so much. I'm training to be a pilot now which is likely to be an even more demanding career, but when you love your passion I'd your Job it's a hell of a lot easier to justify. What he doesn't talk about for the career aspect is that yes while it eats up your life outside of work it leaves you with a sense of fulfilment and pride in what you do that a standard job doesn't.

How interesting. Turning 28 next month and as a lawyer I can confirm there is no desire for close interpersonal relationships. Work days are an average of 13 hours. When the pandemic began I was a newly qualified and did even longer days. Most of my friends are either settled down now, getting married or having babies and don't understand why I'm not doing the same. After years of studying, training I'm finally doing what I was working towards all this time. The legal profession is incredibly demanding. After a really long day, I just want some peace. It's nice to know that someone out there understands. Edit: 29 in a few weeks... In a year, I got promoted & a chance to build/train my own team - after even more hours, hard work, tears & meltdowns later... I now work reduced hours, take weekends off, and even travel so long as there is WiFi. If you're reading this, keep hustling. 🤍

"Most jobs aren't desirable, meaningful, or the central place of your life"... but you dedicate more than half of the day to it. Adulthood is absolutely frightening! I wonder why civilization hasn't collapsed due to an epidemic of suicides (I'll grow up I suppose). We humans are animals with survival instinct after all...

I know right? If we knew when we were young that we weren’t going to do anything meaningful then what was honestly the point of even living life to begin with? Why were we even given so much pressure to do well in school when we were young if we were just going to be eaten alive anyways by society and be stuck in a shitty minimum wage job our whole lives while the corporates live comfortable lives on top? This is why I have no faith in humanity. I wonder why we haven’t just launched nukes at each other yet.

Working as a traveling welder pipe welder. Generally work 60 hours in 5 days to have 2 days off where I volunteer work with kids to make their lives better (help with home work, being a mountain bike coach, being an adult they can trust and lean on when they're not feeling good etc. I spend roughly 25 hours in my house every week, that is 3 nights worth of sleep. And cutting the lawn once per week. I have had 3 days of vacation in total during the last 4 years I have no time for a relationship and I feel no pull for one either. The few hours here and there when I have time for myself do I have more than enough money to do whatever I want, which is driving my dream car, and me owning a house and my dream car without having loaned a single penny at age 25 just shows that working is what I do best and what I love to do. I would say that I have a career and I'm working towards a goal.

I'm a no body. Just completed high school in life........I'm over 50 now and don't have a social life. I do have a career. I'm a train operator...Extremely well paid and love my career. I show up to work 45min to a hour early and do overtime if I can.....Hopefully I can work to 70 years old. Not because I have too....Awesome pension, but because I want to... My life has meaning since my career......Imagine growing up sleep walking in life amounting to nothing with dead end jobs in my 30s. Then you end up trying your best in exams and months of testing until 2 years later you finding made it...You make so much money for the company your not even considered an expensive. Your a serious asset which is everything to the business. Your told this constantly. I take it seriously and make sure safety and efficiency is my top priority. Why?...I use to play with trains as a kid....Had a extensive train set.....took up a 3rd of the attic. My love and joy as a child becomes my reality.....I cannot explain to you how this feels. I can only say....I understand what he means......For once....I can relate...

Lucky if you like me happen to have been granted the opportunity to go to Law School. Indeed very demanding stressful and competir and no intimate personal relationships are not really found there. I still work as one, but thank God, mainly teaching it at a University. Then I went back to University, while being a Las Profesor, to become a clinical Psychologist. I need to be in contact with people and help them with their emotional trouble. Go for it if you have the blessing of Perusing a career. You’re not to old. Money you’ll eventually get it back if you happen to be in debt; specially if you are lucky enough to do what you like for a living a true career. Become a great whatever and money will come. Hope this helps someone. Thanks Doctor. If you’re already in University; Study. Learn from professors, books and people.
