2 or 3 year old is when most children's speech and language is taking off. They are starting to learn about using new words, longer sentences and asking questions. Therefore, when a parent notices the child is not interacting with others or having speech, they are usually puzzled.
Most of the time, we don't teach children how to talk. Just like we don't teach them how to walk, we provide opportunities for them to walk, so they naturally pick up walking.
However, when a child is having difficulties, we do have to teach them differently. It's just like teaching them to play a piano and riding a bicycle, we have to take them step by step with guidance, allowing them opportunities to try and taking them through the process gradually.
There are two main categories of factors affecting childen's speech development:
1. The cognitive aspect: the child need to know that each object has a label, when people talk to him he should respond.
2. The physical aspect: oral motor control (how the child moves his tongue, and/or lips).
When children have speech difficulties, what is often just a small step for their peers maybe a big step for them. For example when the teacher is teaching new words such as "Giraffe" and "Rhinoceros".
In speech and language therapy, we diagnose the area of difficulty and break it up from a big step to many small intermediate achievable steps. It is absolutely important for parents to remember that the process could take a long time and they have to be patient.
You can check out LeoMagan.com/B... now for videos and information about factors affecting children's speech and language development.
Have fun and bond with your child in this learning process.

My daughter is 3, and she can speak some sentences..She knows what objects are but has a tough time with some communication. She is shy when she first meets a person. But when her Pappas or Nana are on the phone even, she doesn't want to talk. If I ask her to repeat a word for say in s book, she won't. Then all of a sudden she does when not asked? She can throw major tantrums for instance...when she wants something. She will say I want that, but not say the object when asked for what she wants? Or says I can't do it a lot even when she can. We always say good job a lot when she does things correctly but..for some reason there are just sentences that still make no sense. She talks fast too. Saw a therapist a year ago and they said she was fine, but My gut is telling me I've failed somewhere. She's at the point when I read to her she will take the book away and pretend like she is reading. Or just not be interested. I love her so much just need some advice please! Ty

My 3 yr old, almost 4 yr old boy says he wants to go outside, cookie, let's call mama, he knows his colors, how to count to 15 and some animals, but I notice other children his age do more talking and I'm worried:/ all this fright about autism scares me, he makes eye contact Nd he lets me hold him but he does get fustrated and throws things easily, could you help me or give me some insight that he's doing ok or he may have a disorder, he's my only baby and I'm worried constantly about him, thank you!

My son is 2 years old and he understands everything we ask him for, like when we ask him to close or open a door, for example. He speaks a baby language that does not consist with any actual word but he has facial and body expressions as if he was telling a story in another language. He really lacks words, he can say: hi, mommy, mom, look!, yummy!, eww!..and thats pretty much all he says. Even though I am with him all day and talking and explaining everything all the time. Can it possibly be normal or is it a sign of some issue?

This helped a lot because I have a 3 year old brother who can basically understand everything we ask, for example, "Can you give me that blue blanket?" He can walk, run, crawl, but he can't talk and I was starting to get worried because when I was a baby, I started talking when I was about 1 year old and being he is already 3, is starting to get worrisome! Thank you.

I have a 2 year old who isn't speaking sentences or phrases. he'll say mama, papa, cheche (milk) call his sister Api instead of Emily, our dog nena instead of Athena. I'm extremely worried since my 8 year old has had speech problems sin forever and therapy has helped a bit yet she doesn't speak as coherent or as varied as other normal children do. is this even genetic thing?

Our 3.5 year old boy doesn't seem to fit the two usual categories of speech delays you mention. He is bright and happy, he knows thousands of words and uses them correctly. He can identify things and ask for what he wants, usually with fairly good sentences and very clear speech. But he neither speaks nor understands complex sentences. Any attempt to talk to him about why something happens or when something happened is completely lost on him. He can't understand story books. It's strange, he's so capable in so many ways, but his language understanding is on a flat plane. There doesn't seem to be any information on what could possibly be holding him back. He has two older brothers who are fine.

My son is 3yrs old and he will not pay attention to anything I try to show him or teach him. He ignores me all the time and I am constantly forced to send him to time out for not paying attention and/or communicate OR to just let it go as I dont know what to do. My partner always brushes it off as if it is just faze that he will grow out of but I am very concerned about his future.

Kat Lee Kate my son is 6 has never said a word he laughs,plays loves,it's important to remember no mess are gonna make them talk.There some people that will never talk n there life.its nobody's fault.You should never put your son in time out for something he can't help..This does nothing but make the despise you down the road.When I was younger I despite's authority not because there authority but because there telling me do something I can't and then yell at me like I'm doing it on purpose..people forget times we live in are new,not all things are right because someone has a license.Wasnt to long ago when we lived in the cowboy days or even the 80'were parents would ship there kids off to strangers who in the long run didn't know shit about there problems an alotta kids die..nobody knows your son like you..NOBODY..the number one thing that's most important in kids with learning disabilities or handicaps is that there happy.happy kid can make all. The difference,no kid should feel different or be told there different we are all blessed in our own ways.

I really liked your video however I don't think parents who have children with delayed speech sometimes want to accept the fact that their little one has a problem which I think hurts when they do get into kindergarten or others try to interact with them. Fortunately, my 3 1/2 year doesn't have this obstacle but I've observed kids her age or older who do. I have a cousin who is 5 and can barely or rarely understand what she says. Her mom refuses to get her help I feel for her cuz she'll try and tell me something and I have no idea what she says. Her hearing has been checked her grandmother says so must be cognitive part she's having trouble with. Why is it some grasp language better than others? Is it simulation in their lives? Allowing them to not have to respond to people who speak to them? I know when my daughter has a difficult time learning a new word like "furious" I say it slowly in her ear so she can differentiate between that word and a similar sounding one like curious.
@LeoMagan
@LeoMagan 10 лет назад
Hi Jean, thank you for sharing.Your daughter is lucky to have a parent who believes in speech stimulation - keep up the good work! When a child is only 2 or 3 years old, being a late talker may not sound like a serious problem, and indeed there are normal individual quantitative difference in how children develop. However, if you are concerned about some significant qualitative differences or more severe difficulties in learning words, sounds or language skills, you may want to be aware that research evidence shows that speech delay may point to cognitive or learning difficulties that will later result in reading difficulties or academic learning difficulties. Late talkers are also much more likely to experience social difficulties and even bullying. Studies show that by as young as 3 years of age, children with language difficulties may be avoided by their peers. 2-3 years is actually a time of explosive growth in speech and language development: children are learning to create their own original sentences, they are learning to use complete sentences, and they are responding to others and communicating, versus just learning 'labels' for objects etc. Parents who notice significant qualitative differences in how their child learns, develops and uses speech should seek professional help. Such a child is unlikely to outgrow his difficulties. Parents of school-age children often wish they have done therapy much earlier as they try to juggle therapy with school demands; conversely, for children who receive therapy early, it is much more likely difficulty can get resolved before they start school, so that they are not handicapped in school.

Thank you Leo Magan, this was very informative and gives me hopes as I just faced the reality that my 2.9m old daughter needs to be evaluated. I have been very scared because she seems to have lost the ability to say most of the words she once knew when she was two. She doesn't interact or look into my eyes when I ask her a question, she either looks elsewhere, says nothing or is just sings, saying the abc's, anything she has memorized to the T. She will only use one word to ask for something, like "juice", "milk", "toy", "dog", etc. We've had a hard time believing that there can be anything wrong with her because she is so intelligent, she definitely understands commands. I don't know if the fact that she is babysat by my in-laws and they speak spanish (from one dialect) my husband and I speak English/spanish interchangeably and my parents whom we visit every weekend religiously speak spanish as well but with a whole different dialect. We are expecting to hear from the early intervention program in a week or two, until then can you give me some tips as to how we can help her with those little steps to helping develop her speech/interact with us. Thank you!

Thank you for breaking the issue of speech development down in an easy to understand manner. I truly think parents (or other concerned individuals dealing with a child who has delayed speech) will benefit from your explanation of speech development. You provide essential information which could possibly assist recognizing and addressing potential issues which may indeed require intervention from a trained and licensed professional. This simple to understand explanation may quite possibly help alleviate concerns for parents and caregivers who have been trying, to the best of their ability, to help a little one learn to speak and having little to no results. Sometimes, there is only so much a parent or caregiver can do and hopefully this will help them realize they are not failing the child; they simply require professional assistance. The same holds true in cases of denial. No parent wants to believe their child is lagging behind due to potential medical problems. So, perhaps this video will open a door for frustrated parents who may be in denial about the possibility of their child having a problem and seek professional help by discussing the issue with their PCP. In both scenarios, sometimes one must face and understand that delayed speech might possibly be an issue which requires a team effort with the aid of medical specialists; such as a speech pathologist. Thanks again for posting this video.
@LeoMagan
@LeoMagan 10 лет назад
Thank you very much for your kind comments. It's our goal to promote awareness and we hope parents understand how speech language delay can affect children's development. In a recent video on Specific Language Impairment (SLI), we also discussed how early childhood speech and language difficulties can also have an impact on their learning in school. In most cases, many studies have shown that children with speech language delay who do not seek professional help usually do not grow out of it. We hope to highlight these issues so parents are more aware of them and children can get professional help to address them early. We are glad the video seemed to strike a chord with you and sincerely appreciate you sharing your thoughts :)

My sister in law is 4 years old turning 5 and doesn't say sentences & doesn't have a complete dialogue. she isn't autistic , she plays , laughs hugs and all of that . she is bilingual but BUT understands EVERYTHING in Spanish and English & yet doesn't speak . shell sometimes say things here and there at random, I've tried . she says more English words than Spanish words . she said remote one time when I didn't give it to her , shell say " yumm" for when she's hungry and if u ask her if you can have some shell say " my yumm" and not that long ago she said 2 complete sentences in one day which has never ever happened she said " no it's my birthday! " and when my mom in law moved her cupcake she said " no no no why did you move it ma ?" and the whole family was shocked . I've been around for about a year already with my boyfriends family & I honestly don't think they take her to get checked even though they say they have . And I am not one to point out the obvious which is " your daughter just babbles why ??" no she's super intelligent! shell arrange things from smallest to biggest , vice versa, shell hold the phone up to her ear and babble in her own language , shell say " Aminos" for vaminos which means let's go in Spanish and I've probably been the only productive person trying to teach her words or to ask me . At least say the word that she wants . Shell pull me to get her chocolate milk & she gets the milk out the fridge and the chocolate and I obviously knows what she wants and I stand there asking her over and over and over " say chocolate and I'll give you some " and trust me she KNOWS what I'm saying but she just won't say it . she isn't potty trained , she walks on her tippy toes & we tell her walk right and she'll do it but there seconds later shes back on her tippy toes. Her parents thinks it's because she's lazy & that may be the case also , but I don't really think so . She isn't in school and she's 5! isnt potty trained & I'm getting really concerned & fed up with my boyfriends family on why they don't do anything about it ! If anyone could please help and give me some suggestions on what us wrong with her I'd really appreciate it . I've looked up so many things & nothing really comes down to what's wrong with her

Hi Ashley, Good to hear that you are setting up an appointment for your daughter. I know it can be daunting and a little scary for parents to seek professional assessment. But you are doing your child a big favour by seeking help early. Thanks for sharing and good luck.

Alissa rosenbaum bilingual children are normally behind in language, we spoke Cayuga and English to our daughter and she's really behind in speaking too but knows EVERYTHING you say to her. the doctors said by age 5 she should be more advanced in both
