My Chilli's went outside into the greenhouse quite early at the start of April, with heat mat and in a propagator (uncovered during daytime). diatomaceous earth food grade works great for ants. The best thing about it is that you can eat it as a suppliment and it 100 percent safe for all animals. Its made from fresh water diatoms or seashell. Just sprinkle it around the outside of your greehouse and directly into the tops of your pots. Re-apply every so often after a rain etc... i get mine on amazon. I killed a few fire ant nests with it as well. It causes ant heads and legs to fall off.

I love the updates and we all have unlucky seasons ! Diatomaceous earth for the ants but the key it to get them to move away from your yard to your neighbors....you have to locate the were they are going then blast them with water and nematodes ...lots of water then the nematodes to kill the larvae forcing the ants to move Also your aphids have been a problem for years so it's in the soil . I suggest trying promix hp to start your seedlings with no compost and just bottled nutrients like the general flora series to make sure no aphids are happening. 17°C 😮I don't think our nightly temps (Stockholm, Sweden) have been under 18°C for the last week or so. Are the 3 liter pots the final pot size for those plants? If so it will indeed be interesting to see the result. I usually use 2 liter pots for my "extras", so it could be interesting to see the difference another liter would make. That blue barrel... Mango chutney 🤤I'd love one of those barrels full with actual mango chutney 🤪And I'm guessing you got a brewdog glass then?! 🤞That tiny number 157 plant looks cute. Looks like 0.18 liter pot just to see how it would do. I pruned the bottom 10 cm (4 inches) leaves (even new ones) on all my plants the other day. Makes airflow better and also makes it easier to water since I'm still top watering them. 🤣those conflicting weather reports. We have the same thing in Sweden with SMHI. Just goes to show that it *kinda* is an ever moving "guessing game". Haha Barney the digger. You should put an actual wooden fence around it with a little gate. Would looks awesome if you ask me 😄
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 4 месяца назад
I am hoping to have better temperatures soon! Still cloudy here today...and cold. Around 14'C! Wooden fence would be great...but as you know I recently built a fence to keep Barney in a section of our yard....and that made me realise how damn expensive it is 😲. But yeah, that would look amazing. Only other issue I could see though with a permanent fence, is it would make the bed prep a little more challenging. With a temporary fence, in the beginning of the season I can remove it to get things done. Will have to do some thinking for next season!

@RebelCoderX

Hi Shaun! I got some seeds last year, but I didn't get round to doing anything with them. So last december I finally put them in some soil. The piri piri has given me loads of peppers already. It's very productive and healthy plant (although it does have tiny leaves and many pale and yellow leaves). My gf loves using them in all kinds of tasty chinese dishes. The sugar rush stripey and CC Jalapeno are also nicely productive. Unfortunately those peppers are still a bit too spicy for me to eat raw. I've been looking for a nice snack chilli pepper, but so far I haven't found one mild enough for me 😅 Unfortunately the others are not doing great. The Malawi Piquante (peppadew) has only grown somewhat small fruits so far (about 1-1.5cm diameter), the trinidad perfume only grew one small pepper so far (it's dropping most of the flowers) and the habanero only grew one tiny pepper, barely a few mm in size, and also dropping most of its flowers. There's lots of leafdrop, pale yellow leaves and curled leaves as well. What do you think could be wrong? I'm growing them inside under 3 LED grow lights which have workled great a couple of years before when I had many more plants. I ran out of perlite when transplanting them from a small plastic cup where they sprouted to a bigger pot. Do you think they could have a problem with the roots? I can't trace the problem to overwatering or underwatering. I don't think the problem is a lack of nutrients, because there are quite a few healthy leaves as well, mainly the jalapeno has many healthy green leaves. Could I just have been unlucky picking the wrong seed to grow a plant from? I still have several seeds left so I could try again with a new plant. Maybe I could provide a bigger pot, but I don't have a lot of space. They are now in a pot with a diameter of almost 17cm. A few years ago I had 3-4 cayenne plants that were very healthy and productive in the same pots as far as I can remember.
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 3 месяца назад
My first thoughts are that you are overwatering. Especially with the lack of perlite not allowing good drainage. With regards to flower drop, make sure the humidity in the grow space is above 60%. A quick fix there is to spray/mist plain water in the morning and evening over the plants.
@RebelCoderX
@RebelCoderX 3 месяца назад
@@ChilliChump Hmm thanks! Yeah you could have a point with overwatering actually. I changed the watering pattern to daily a while ago after I forgot to water them for a bit too long. The leaves were drooping so much I thought some plants might have died.. But since I changed it, I never saw any droop anymore but instead now this curling and such.. Since they got a bit large and I rearranged them to 2 plants per tray, I have not been watering each tray every day anymore and perhaps they are already recovering a bit which is why I'm seeing some healthy leaves as well. I guess the daily watering was overcompensating.. I don't have a hygrometer to check the humidity, but I'll give it a try to spray some water. What surprises me is that the moz piri piri has tons of flowers that don't drop. Maybe just differences between the cultivars?
@ChilliChump

Anything with Abamectin will wipe them out. If you don't want to go down the pestercide route then aphelinus abdominalis will take care of them too. Good luck. PS: the curling you're seeing is due to the aphids but, curling can also be a Calcium deficiency or even a sub optimal environment. I'm seeing some lower yellowing and interveinal chlorosis which suggests that maybe you're not feeding enough. When removing the leaves, you also have to remember a plant can translocate ions. However SeedsIO is built to be mobile first, so it should work seamlessly on your phone through the browser (like you see me doing in the video)

@ChilliChump I appreciate the quick and thorough reply! I totally understand, I took a few coding/programming courses for games and app design a few years ago never put it to use unfortunately if I wasn't so rusty I'd jump in to help a bit! Glad to see something is in the works, imo I wouldn't mind paying a few $ a month for a sub for the app version, maybe have it have custom features only available on the app or something to give option/reason so you can make a little money from it? I'd rather pay a sub to someone I trust and support than a random company that sells information and violates privacy like most companies do... Thanks again, good luck with the grow this year!

@ChilliChump that's a good point hadn't considered that. The ants are pretty greedy so my hope is they take the granules down into their nest before anything else can come into contact with it. It may be overkill for some but the fire ants are pretty ruthless here on the US gulf coast

Hi shaun whats your opinion on pots made of cloth?
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 4 месяца назад
I am not a big fan of them. Especially with the way I grow. You will be watering more, and drying out quicker, especially on the edges. Results with them have never been as good as my other methods. Biggest benefit of them is that they are cheap up front. But if you get decent pots, they can last many years and makes sense financially.

@jawjow
@jawjow 4 месяца назад
@@ChilliChump Usually this bio-repelent is more comonly used against aphid, red-spiders and mildew but if you think about it, nettles are not so comonly attacked by ants, so it could be also a suitable (and organic) solution. Cut small fresh nettles (like 500 grams ~ 1kg) for like 20 lts of water, put all in a bin, cover it with a lid and let it for 2-3 weeks in a place dark and fresh, stir it every 3 days. Once the time is passed, you can mix it 1 part of nettle stock for 5 of water to spray your plants, pots and surroundings.

The ants are there because of the aphids. They "milk" them for their honeydew. Get rid of the aphids and you get rid of the ants. They aren't really interested in your plants. Alternatively I've had really good results with cinnamon in the past. They don't like the smell and typically vacate the contaminated spots relatively fast. Just don't bury your plants in cinnamon. That can have negative effects down the line(and would be rather expensive).

diatomaceous earth is a pet friendly, eco friendly way of dealing with ants and pretty much anything else that crawls. Aside from that there are colony killing gels that disguise themselves as food. The workers take them back and they circulate up to the queens and wipe the entire colony out. Either way should work well for your ant issue. Cheers.

Ants and aphids... Maybe praying, mantises, ladybugs, ladybug larva, maybe even let some spiders in there. Maybe even let the chickens walk around in the greenhouse. Maybe they’ll eat the ants before they have a chance to climb up to the plants.

I've tried different methods of borax application and the Terro Liquid ant Baits has done wonders, the other methods didn't work as well as these traps! If this brand isn't available to you, I'd try something similar that's enclosed, I believe that's why its so successful- no leaking, no dilution when watering, less evaporation, etc.
