My grandmother is a professional tailor. I'm very lucky. I pretty much bring everything to her since I'm 5'7. I've gotten to see her work many times and I'd say I'm pretty well-versed about dimensions and alterations, at least when it pertains to men's clothing. One thing I've noticed over the years is that you can only alter a piece of clothing so much until the proportions just look weird. Like there needs to be a certain amount of space between the pockets and the bottom hem of a sweater. Or between the last button and the bottom hem. The sleeves on any oversized top need to have enough length and width to work aesthetically with the oversized pit-to-pit. A lot of pants, particularly double knees, are designed so that your knee hits a certain part. You can only compensate for these issues so much with tailoring before it begins to look strange. Might be an interesting topic to discuss in one of your videos.
I think it actually makes total sense that women's clothing wasn't standardized until the 1900's, while it began for men in the 1700's. Like you mentioned, the military uniforms were a large part of this. But I would also have to say this "phenomenon" was largely constructed by the way the working world existed in the 18th/19th centuries. Men were expected to work and present as the public face of the family unit, while women were largely relegated to the home and completing domestic work. Factor in the time men spent going to work, socializing, etc. in this era and it makes perfect sense that men (who have by and large been culturally instructed to value function primarily in their wardrobes) had standardized measuring first; less time tailoring and waiting for garments to be fixed meant more time to increase capital, as well as the lesser cost of pre-manufactured goods vs. artisan work (this last point is more-so speculation). Add in that women were (and still are) encumbered by societal expectations of beauty and it makes sense that women by-and-large wore handmade garments designed to fit their body best up until the boom of the second world war. With new expectations for how women were to present in the world (i.e. the growth of sectors such as secretary work and other fields stereotypically associated with women) and less time in the home, it really adds up that the introduction of standardized sizing in womenswear began to crop up in the U.S. during the 40s/50s.
Drew's videos are such a great balance of information and entertainment and it makes for such an enjoyable experience. The imagery and editing were great and show why I love watching Drew's videos. Keep it up bro
i think this is part of why oversized and loose-fitting fashion has gotten so big (no pun intended) it’s a lot easier to avoid some of the issues here when clothes are purposefully too big. i know it’s been part of why i’m getting into oversized. i’m a 6’ somewhat curvy transgender man with long legs so my proportions are an absolute nightmare to shop for, especially since i’m far too poor to get clothes tailored or even new a lot of the time. buying slightly oversized or loose fitting clothes has made my life significantly easier because i no longer worry as much about whether a pair of pants is too tight in the hip or chest or too short for my torso when everything is a bit baggy. obviously i’m against shopping for larger sizes when you’re smaller since so many stores lack stock in those sizes for people who actually need them, but my best fitting pants are a little loose in the waist and very loose everywhere else and i love them so much. clearly this doesn’t fix the main issues here, but i think it’s why oversized clothes are popular and it’s a nice way to help ensure you’ll look at least somewhat good if you can’t afford to get stuff tailored or shop for new stuff
If your clothes don’t fit have them tailored but only if the item itself is figure flattering. You must know the styles, shapes and fabrics that work on your body. You can also have your tailor personalize items by changing buttons and zippers or removing unnecessary embellishments. If like me, your weight fluctuates, knowing what flatters you regardless of size is paramount. My grandma and my mom sewed clothes as a hobby. This 80’s kid was too cool to learn how. 🤦🏾♀️
Hey Drew, great video, I think it is difficult for brands to get clothes done in the right sizes, because everyone has a different perception of fashion and a different opinion on how some clothes should fit on themselves, for example I can think a pair of jeans look great on you and it's the absolutly right fit for you, but you can think otherwise, and this different opinions and feelings about how clothes should fit on people come with the idea that fashion is something different for everyone, that's why it is impossible to relay on the standart sizes (S, M, L, XL ...), because they're not only considered in a different way by different people, but also among different brands. Not about the video, but I think you should get a bonsai to have in your background it would look so awsome!!
An interesting perspective is also that your body does of course not define your gender. So as someone who is trans it gets even more frustrating. This especially extends to shoe sizes, good luck finding a nice pair of heels in a size 43 and beyond for example. And while you can get your clothes tailored for an affordable for most kind of price, a pair of shoes made to your measurements makes most easily bankrupt :/
I know I've said this before, but it's your discussions about anthropology that make your channel so special. It's just so interesting to recontextualize society in this way! Combine that with your cool style, and boom, we have an awesome RU-vid channel :)
Clothes off the rack are never meant to fit perfectly. They are meant to fit the masses and as you know tailoring is always encouraged. Back in the day clothing was mainly custom until companies and clothing companies decided to mass produce clothes and along came standardized sizing. So that’s the reason why clothes especially leg wear rarely ever fit perfectly. They are meant to be tailored If these brands made pants to fit one persons perfectly it would negate them from making money cuz they can only sell to that one body type. If it fits your perfectly it would not fit other people at all.
It’s not really racist or sexist, it’s just supposed to fit the standard deviation of the consumer they’re marketing to. Unfortunately people who lift weight a lot like myself do not fall under the standard deviation too. Thinking about starting a brand for this as most brands catering to athletic are lame af lol.
I love your positivity and inclusiveness for all sizes. It is difficult to find clothing that actually fits, and it's understandable since we come in all different shapes and sizes and that makes the world a very interesting place. I'm subscribing, and I can't wait to see more of your content.
For anyone not fitting levi’s 501’s, try the regular straight or regular tapered jeans from edwin. The made in Japan collection is awesome and fits a more athletic / big upper leg type of body.
Thanks so much for a video on this. I have literally been telling my wardrobe clients for years about this exact concept… I just hate seeing that sizing has SUCH a monopoly on how people view their own bodies in a negative way.
As a first generation asian american/immigrant, i found american sizes almost always fit me super awkward, especially the jacket's arm lengths, theyre often longer than my arms no matter what size i chose. Maybe i have a narrower than average shoulder? But asian sizing arent any better tho, they're often too small. And im too broke for tailored clothing 😭
I feel you. Asian as well and everything always feels longer than it should be. I've spent years trying to figure out a better way to deal with it and it seems the only way that I don't like is to be bone thin so I can have less of a chest size or spend a lot more at tailors. Tho another is to just buy clothing from asian companies or those with more asian sizing proportions.
For me I'm always having difficulties finding my size for tops, I'm always a large or xl, so ordering online can be rough even with chest and arm measurements
Even as someone who gets all their stuff tailored since I’ve been a child cus my parents also do so, one thing that with age I haven’t been able to counter is having a big athlete butt. I’d be a size 30 if traditionally proportioned but because of my butt and leg muscles I buy like 34ish and then get them tailored. Some pieces are basically impossible to fix sadly. Same goes for my wingspan as my shoulders, chest and neck are very broad but my arms are normal sized so I also have to buy oversized tops and then get them fixed.
Would you say it's worth it? I have some clothes I really like and I feel like they could use a bit of tailoring at the hem. The thing is, if I do one garment, I have to do all the rest because otherwise it'd look weird. Right not it doesn't look bad at all, wondering what your take is with all the experience you have.
Thank you bro, I see you in a number of comments (Shawn Cee, etc) and I literally get a number of fashion youtubers from your subscriptions. Thank you for putting me on
Great video as always man, particularly for us who struggle with sizing, really appreciate it as an awkwardly proportioned fella. #PVV It only came out last year but the singing on Dijon's 2021 album Absolutely really stuck with me, the rawness of his vocals and the straining and cracking of his voice as he pours his heart into his lyrics was stellar to listen to; particularly on the songs Rodeo Clown and Annie. edit: also love the new production style, feels a lot more professional/documentary-esk can't help but feel like a new 'fuller sounding' microphone with a more powerful, louder amp would really make your content feel 'grander' and would match this newer editing style, keep up the good work man loving the improvement.
love the #pvv prompts!! favorite viewer engagement tactic hands down. also id have to say penultimate episode of season 1 of bojack horseman, when bojack asks diane if hes a good person, and the episode cuts. id done the same thing before irl before watching that moment, and it hit
You always come up with such good concepts for videos man, idk how you do it. #PVV i know this is a really famous one but when madara's speech first aired in 2014 it just made me realise how everyone only really cares about themselves(me included), but thats just the way it is.
6'6 Samoan here with a muscular build and taro legs lmao. Finding pants is always a nightmare but your videos on the dickies carpenter jeans and carhartt pants were a godsend. Quite literally the only pants I can find that can accomadate a smaller waist and bigger thighs.
I bought a pair of the large baggy jeans from Balenciaga online in a size SMALL and the waist was a 36 LMAO. Thankfully my tailor is super talented and took it all the way down to about a 31
#PVV One scene that stuck with me from when I was little is a scene from an anime called (Rimi, Nobody's Girl) that used to come up on TV. At some point in the anime, there was this guy that used to let homeless kids work for him, and if they did not bring him money by the end of the day he hit them, and in one scene he hit one of the kids so hard I cried, I think that scene taught me empathy lol.
as man who has a very thin waist size... (size 28) its a pain to find pants that fit me well because it seems like the general population of people have larger waists than me... like its a lot more common to find sizes 32-36, but not 28 or 29 ): #pvv 👊🏾👊🏾never got into dragon ball, but ngl all i remember is them screaming 🤣🤣
This was great Drew. Thank you for this! I was a little frustrated when I was looking to purchase the ‘Manhattan’ hoodie from oree and I had reached out about the sizing because they’re using standardize sizing with no visual/model reference whatsoever. I get there is a size chart but the hoodie is cropped. I got no response so they simply lost a customer. Hopefully they as well as other independent / small brands take this into consideration.
Great content as always, & a subject most of us have dealt with. I've always struggled with finding the right fit for many garments I purchase. I' 5'9", I fluctuate between 169-170lbs(give or take) I've always had an athletic build especially in the trunk area(for pants), & have a long torso. Getting things tailored is the only way to get the fit just right!
Fantastic video!!! I’m 43.34.46 and it’s fkn impossible to find clothing. Sizing charts barely help because once the clothes comes, it fits too damn big. Not sure how they were designed to fit that it seems to just not work with my body.
Marilyn Monroe was not a size 12 lmao. she was 120 pounds. She was probably a 6 for most of her life. Later in life she was slightly heavier which pissed her off. Still not a 12
Yeah I hate when people try to say she was plus sized when she had like a 25 inch waist. Although a size 12 back then is completely different than a 12 now. Also people often reference her measurements while she was pregnant too
Hi Drew! I'm a fan of your content and i was wondering if you would ever consider doing a video on Korean/kpop fashion? I've noticed a lot of fashion channels Ive watched seem to gloss over the kpop fashion scene and never go into detail analyzing any fashion trends or giving any personal opinions on the Korean fashion scene, or only gravitate towards super popular groups (eg BTS or Blackpink). Kpop is known for taking inspiration from various other scenes culturally and musically, notably black culture (for better or for worse) and i was curious on your opinion of it, as historically black culture and fashion gets appropriated and never given enough credit to its actual creators. Ive seen in your previous videos you've mentioned kpops influence fashion wise and i believe you, as a presumable non fan, would be able to give honest unbiased opinions and not dismiss it solely because its kpop. as a kpop fan who's also into fashion and gained a lot of my personal style thorough seeing their styling id love to know your thoughts! maybe if not individual idols but a groups styling/identity? ill list a few idols whose style i find interesting, some well known and others whose style i think isn't talked about enough (for reference, typically their Instagram accounts will show their personal style the most accurately but it depends!) BTS Namjoon(RM) NCT 127 Yuta IVE Wonyoung BlackPink Jennie Seventeen Hoshi, Vernon and Minghao(The8) Twice Chaeyoung Red Velvet Joy and Seulgi Shinee Key and Jonghyun Big Bang GD 2NE1 CL TheBoyz Chanhee(New) feel free to add more in the replies!
I actually am 91-65-95 in measurements, 1,8m tall, weigh around 61 kilos and STILL the only two items that fit me perfectly without any tailoring are Champion Reverse Weave hoodies/sweatshirts and late 90s men's Levi's 501. Impressive, huh? Even someone with model-esque proportions is going to struggle
Well the standard can’t be just “I watch throwing fits podcast so I’m into the underground fashion scene and people don’t know about this, i’M a TrEnDSeTtEr”
I feel way too fortunate to be close to a typical model size and often use the “model is 5’9” wearing a S or whatever to my advantage. I have no boobs, but a big ribcage , so having to guesstimate in that area compared to the model , is usually the most difficult… but ok ? I really wish that we could keep this formula and transparency of what size the model is wearing , but ADD MORE HEIGHT AND SHAPE VARIANCE! Like cmon y’all , they would sell more clothes and prob have less returns 😅
#pvv FMBH( Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood) I liked the quote from Roy Mustang: “Nothing’s perfect, the world’s not perfect, but it’s there for us, trying the best it can. That’s what makes it so damn beautiful.”
I'm not overweight, just a well built guy with broad shoulders. 15 years ago it was impossible to get anything to fit. XLs were fitting like a true M. These days clothes are more true to size thank gawd.
Pants really are impossible. I think that's why joggers got so popular especially if they have a pretty strong cuff at the end of the leg, cuz it's easier to adjust the length and still look decent. Usually the thigh is pretty big already so you just gotta get that right and adjustable waist a godsend. My only gripe is I wish there were some type of work jogger made of a tougher material, but I don't think world is ready for canvas double knee cargo joggers lol.
I can’t seem to find a well fitting garment, H&M I’m a medium and I have a drop shoulder but it’s fits good in the body, Eddie Bauer I’m a perfect large, diesel fits long enough in the body but the shoulder is to short for me. When we get to pants it becomes so much worse
being a bigger dude it's always fun getting a tee that fits right or pants that have a normal size rise. usually when I do find a piece that checks those boxes I go nuts and buy every color 😂
@@DrewJoiner ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e3uoxi_L05o.html this was after Pain invaded the leaf, Naruto defeated his remote-controlled body and learned about how he grew up in a warzone
@@sebastianvega6032 yeah this whole part of the show in my opinion is the best. I think naruto essentially had the proper perspective - breaking the cycle of hate
all clothes should be sized relative to their exact measurements, and people should know their measurements. i check the size charts on websites that have good ones or bring a tailor's tape measure whenever i go shopping and i have way less fails with copping stuff now. like, my fav pants are acne jeans that are a tag 28/32 but measure at a 30/30. also big up tailors for when certain parts do & don't fit
For me growing up in an immigrant family, I've always known my body measurements because we couldn't afford new clothes- we went to Goodwill and tailored clothes at home. The only clothes that fit my mom and grandma were in the Petites department, which at the time only existed in department stores that we didn't have the budget for. It was common practice to hem pants, hem sleeves, add pockets to things that didn't have any. Plus, different countries' societal norms make it different to find a common "standard". I'm a M/L in American sizing, but if I were to buy something from my family's home country, I'd be more like a 3X to 5X depending on the garment because people with my measurements are very uncommon there. (And too-tight clothing is considered both impractical and vulgar there as well.)
#PVV I got two. One is from a song lyric from Brockhampton and another one from the monogatari series. Brockhampton - San Marcos “When you're torn between reality, and a choice you could have made or should've made, they're not the same, I'm not the same; Maybe I'm broken, either way I'm clinging on closely I know it's unhealthy, appreciate your patience I know that I'm selfish, do my best to be selfless I know that I'm changing, I know that I'm changing” Monogatari "Many people will have lots of different opinions on what you did. There will be those who will say you did the right thing, and those who will say you were wrong. You shouldn’t pay attention to them. Don’t worry about what they’ll say. What you did was neither the right nor the wrong thing. You were just spending your youth.”
#PVV The only piece of media that I can think of that resonated with me similar to how that Dragon Ball scene resonated with you off the top of my head, is when Zuko from Avatar The Last Airbender (cringe I know) says "I don't need luck, though. I don't want it. I've always had to struggle and fight and it's made me strong. It's made me who I am." towards the end of season 1, and "You've always thrown everything you could at me! Well, I can take it, and now I can give it back!" while he's screaming at the sky in season 2. I've also resonated with a lot of anime characters and their journeys, like Deku and Bakugou from Boku no Hero Academia, Rukia and Ichigo from Bleach, Naruto and Shikamaru from Naruto Shippuden, Usagi from Sailor Moon, Aki from Chain Saw Man, and soooo many more. A lot of Kid Cudi's songs, especially "love." have influenced me a lot. Including a lot of famous visual artists, like Kaws, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, etc etc (wow I sound like such a quintessential hypebeast lol). I appreciate the way art/media imitates life and simultaneously helps us guide our way through life itself.
#pvv not even a moment, the guy who wrote the OST to A Silent Voice, "Kensuke Ushio", is like that for me. It's weird, his music isn't trying to draw attention to itself, but for whatever reason my ears always seem to perk up when his stuff's playing in the background.
I personally thrift and you can't find perfect piece you like in your size, so i tailor t shirts and flannels but things like sweatshirt and hoodies, i just embrace them and carry em with confidence.......
#pvv One Piece is just a driving force of inspiration towards reaching your dreams without regret. Cant point out a specific scene but everything about is golden to me. I dont care if its childish but its truly a goated and lovable manga/anime Love your videos as usual!
I be kinda confused tho when brands have a lot of detail for sizing. Im like 5’10.5 and 210. So when i see tall im like “well whats considered tall?” The same when i see short. Im also built disproportionately in the legs, so idk if short or tall takes away from how tight it will be on my legs.
unpopular opinion (maybe) but i think jeans should just always be made on the longer side because you can easily shorten if yourself but you usually can’t lengthen them enough.
is it really too much to ask for Drew to personally pick out colours, style and sizes that work for me. Get me all of the clothes that I will then wear for years until I'm 40 but still look amazingly fashionable on the daily... smh, society
#Pvv I think my first memories of Media absolutely touching my heart and soul where the Digimon movie and the Pokemon Movie. Both are so iconic in their own way in my opinion.
I’m a thicker guy of average height. I always reference my chest measurement for tops to make sure they fit how I like. Bottoms are hard since my torso is long and my legs are short. I tend to crop my pants with scissors for the distressed hem or fold em. I’ve had some cropped, but I personally don’t like the look as much.
I started working out so I can fit better in clothes, tbf I am on the edge of being under weight, after losing 10kgs I haven't been able to gain any back.
