Great tips, especially on layering and articulations. I hadnt thought of layering different mic setups and using solo and close mics for definition. And stop being lazy and use the proper articulations. And here I thought the secret to epicness was just placing OTT on every track.

Although I have over 30 tracks in a non exclusive library and 5 tracks in exclusive ones, I still consider my tracks aren't epic enough. I do all what you talk about from dynamics, to layering, to articulations but the most important things before all that are the composition itself and arrangement. If you apply all these techniques on a poor composition and arrangement, you're not getting anywhere. Excellent arrangements with excellent panning actually won't need a lot of mixing or sometimes no mixing at all because you're already putting each orchestral instrument in its own place in the frequency spectrum. Great video mate :)

Thank you, thank you. Yes, mixing can be a really hard craft. But, getting a decent and professional result for orchestral music isn't so much about mixing. Don't get me wrong, a professional mix engineer can make a huge difference. But no matter what and how, good orchestration is SO important. And no mixing guru will ever be able to fix flaws in the orchestration 🤷‍♂️

@@SamuFL I think so. There are probably composers like myself that don't understand how to compose for other instruments, because we don't play them. Overall, I think any subject for composers can help.

Samuel... great series. I look forward to you videos. Now, I still have a hard time "hearing" the difference between expression and dynamics. Can you point me to some place where I can get a better education on that please? Thank you in advance

thanx Samuel, this is a great tutorial to revisit when you forgot those things over time, btw, i have action strings and action woodwinds they are great in articulations wich are otherwise difficult to express with normal libraries because they are played a certain way i do however find it difficult to incorporate these action libraries into a musical piece, if you have those libraries can you do a tutorial on how to use them, cheers mate
@SamuFL
@SamuFL 3 месяца назад
I don't own these libraries. But in my experience the NI libraries have a bit of a different approach. I would describe it as - they are more about crafting and producing music than they are about composing and arranging... If that makes sense. But yes, they usually sound phantastic for what they are intended for.
@ronnyb5890
@ronnyb5890 3 месяца назад
@@SamuFL bummer you dont have them, the runs are played thats why they sound so good, making runs with short articulations is not the same, cheers Samuel
@SamuFL
@SamuFL 3 месяца назад
@@ronnyb5890 yes! Programmed runs never sound as good as played runs. Well, kind of... Nothing Programmed sounds as good as played. But in runs (specially string runs) it makes a huge difference.

Hi Samuel, thank you for the video. I realized some sample library don’t have expression CC, just volume and modulation, do you treat the volume CC7 as expression?
@SamuFL
@SamuFL 3 месяца назад
Hi. Yes, it's basically the same. More or less. What is important is that expression alone usually doesn't provide the full range of volume. So, combining volume/expression _and_ modulation is more effective, at least to my ears.

11:20 Sounds like its missing low end and mid to high frequency elements clashing, I'd improve that by changing the pitch, volume and panning of elements.
