That's not it, I have a fixed line head. I do not extend the line far enough to hit the guard. But after 6 feet or so of concrete wall, the string breaks right where it emerges from the head. This means I have to stop, and rethread and adjust the line. It does this every dam time regardless of the line quality I buy. I try to keep the cut as light as possible to minimise bending fatigue where the line exits those exit holes give no relief so the line just keeps breaking anyway. I've about had it with line trimmers, very very bad design. The exit hole needs to flare gradually to provide fatigue relief.

Thank you. You've answered my question. My trimmer is brand new so the cutter shouldn't be dull already. Since there is still line in the head I will start my trimmer and get it up to full speed while bumping and see if the line comes out.

I don’t know , have a brand new trimmer Stihl and it continues to break in the top windings inside the head

my line just breaks constantly, it is extremely annoying, shouldn't need to bump the trimmer every three seconds.I also usually have to stop 6 or 7 times to take the reel apart because string breaks off inside because the line gets all locked together in there and wont advance. so crazy to me that in this day and age a better system has not been created for advancing string trimmer line....I appreciate the video but this is for sure not what is causing my particular issue, my blade is super sharp its a brand new string trimmer but I have always had this issue with every string trimmer I have ever had, they are just garbage. crappy design

Don't need to try it that's good advice been doing it that way for years full noise and little bumps at high revs it doesn't take much

I was experiencing this issue yesterday and I think the piece that cuts the line on the guard has broken off.

I did search Dewalt and it does not take a bigger line. But I still have issues with the 0.80 line. The line the trimmer originally came with jammed within minutes of starting it. I found that it was loose inside the head and re-strung the line. It still never worked properly. I restrung it 10+ times and it kept getting hung up inside the head. When I examined the head the slots for the beginning of the line doesn't hold the line. So when you bump the head it comes loose. Do you think this is a defect with my trimmer or just a defective head. I replaced the head with an echo trimmer head which works fine, but I purchased this trimmer a week ago and had to buy 2 new heads just to get it to work. I tried every possible scenario I could think of, I wrapped it slow, I held it down and wrapped it, I wrapped it with no overlaps, I only put half the recommended amount of string. Any suggestions?

John, I went from a straight shaft 2 stroke Stihl to a 4 stroke Sithl (buyers remorse) and the first hour of use on the new one the line broke off at the head a half dozen times. Same line that I used on the old trimmer and never had that happen. I am going to try your suggestions. I noticed the 4 stroke doesn't rev nearly as fast as the old 2 stroke. Probably is part of the problem. Thank yo!

My line breaks without bumping it , I think in my case when the line gets wrapped on the spool it jambs on the spool and won't freely come out , anyway I don't have to bump it for it to break and I've tried several thickness string and gauges , I have the same head as in your video

Just tried, mine was breaking, kept it all full speed and tried not to hit cement too hard, I hear spool adjusting and filling it at full speed instead of kept breaking. Good luck everyone.

This is my first time hearing about 'Bumping'...

This is not working. My string is 0.95 and I can't even get it to go into the notches and hold. It then gets stuck when I bump it Oh and my trimmer is brand new like a day old

just use metal wire

Solution: Take the guard off, thank me later.
