What makes your voice sound boring? I think most people, when they say their voice is boring, mean that is sounds flat or unexciting. There seems to be no interesting aspect of their voice to make it stand out. They gotst the notes and the words, but that's about it!
The real problem is not the person’s voice - it is that they are not exercising all the dynamics that are possible with their voice. As a singer, they are more focused on hitting the notes instead of really interacting with the song. I mean, if you’re covering a song by your favorite artist or band, you want to do it justice, right?
But then, notes, phrases and timing take over and there is no room left for the true expressive factors that you actually can exercise with your voice.
How can you fix that? I’m glad you asked!

I have been working on an album for about the last year+ and just let my bro and a friend hear the first batch of songs last weekend. They both had the same feedback; music = good. Vocals = boring. I've been trying to figure out how to address that feedback, and then this video magically appears! Love that!

Chris, you are a national Treasure lol. I wish I had your videos 10+ years ago. You make it silly and fun, and to be a great student of singing you have to let loose and not be afraid to be silly. I used to wait til the house was empty, along with both neighbors being gone before I’d allow myself to sing out of fear of sounding ridiculous. I didn’t realize this was the foundation of great learning! Thank you Chris 🙏🏼 I am so grateful
@jg1772

I have lost so many years of time while trying to learn to sing properly. Everything from other teachers were so vague and abstract and different words meant different things to each teacher. I used to toe myself in knots trying to expand ribcage, breathe through my nose, get cord contact and the oh so very cliche “sing from the diaphragm. After 20 years I learned from you what that REALLY means. Plus most vocal coaches I have dealt with didn’t know how to connect “proper singing technique” to rock music. I’m sure I have created undue damage and habits through all of the confusion. I could go on forever! But thanks again.

This is actually the best advice you've given so far, and listening to Chris Cornell's isolated vocal tracks, he's not always on perfect pitch. In the past, I didn't notice this and I was making my vocal lines more complex just to make them more interesting, and it created the opposite effect. Soundgarden, to me, is basic bluesy vocal lines but sang in a passionate way (with yells and shouts and a good high range), on top of weird chord voicings and weird guitar melodies and odd time signatures. I can always sing along their songs but I can't always predict the next signature change or guitar chord or solo. I'm a huge fan of them because they are fresh, I can say the same for Pixies from 80's and early 90's.

Indeed, I struggled so much to cover Devin Townsend's Vampira, that has an exciting, fun vocal performance. That is a weird cover option we have. Our band's songs are melancholic progressive metal, so my voice being boring didn't strike me that much. But now I think both our originals and covers could have more life to it.

What a great video! As you said, sometimes we focus so much on trying to hit the notes of the tune, we forget that - even if someone is just listening - it's a performance. Hitting the notes is just a tiny part of delivering a convincing performance. "ow, I hurt myself" sounded like a dumb, lame thing to say at first - by the end, it sounded like the best chorus to the best song I haven't heard yet!

I'd like to add, in addition to listening to you and all the variance, personally hearing different singers and singing "like" them has kinda taught me different styles and textures without even knowing it. Like I'll be singing and paying attention to my voice and feel it doing different things to match what I'm hearing. So it's like learning techniques without knowing it at first. Then one coukd take that, after kinda studying it in your head, and do that other exercise of yours, singing a random phrase, like a piece of mail. And applying the mux of things you've heard. Off top of my head, Bono and Pete Loeffler are good ones to "study". Also, I think once you get used to it, you can match these different techniques to an emotion. Bono does that well. Certain techniques match a certain emotion. Those types of songs, I think, really "get through" emotionally. Hearing desperation, heartbreak, hatred, etc. Where it becomes just natural. Singing how you feel

When I try to go high and my voice is very tired they break up even worse than that. Now i discover that can be the way I use air and have to work on a thin vocal closer without letting too much air escape as this affect my low support(as you explain on the new video 'dry body, dry mouth, dry air lol). I wish i used the break ups and flips as a stylish thing and not a shame that put me in a place of insecurity. Thanks for teaching us how to be in desesperation and not hurt us so much lol.

Calm down Vitas @5:07. Haha. For real though, I'm a versatile singer. I get bored of doing one style of singing. Sometimes when I make an album, the first singing style doesn't sound like the next song singing style. Sometimes in the same song I change my styles. I like getting goofy sometimes with it. I feel like a lot of music isn't diverse and doesn't get fun with it. I think Mike Patton really helped break that boredom in the music scene and definitely helped a lot of us out. Thanks for more tips.

28,000 views in 18 months... most underrated singing advice on youtube!! i think this addresses what 99% of people feel about their singing, and it made a recording of myself sound about 50 times better in one take... I'm new to singing, about 2 months of light practise to go with what is pretty good guitar, and I feel like I'm pretty good at hitting the pitches in my range and my ear is fine from years of guitar playing. I'm really just wanting to sing blues and country stuff and what has annoyed me is that the singers I'm trying to copy/get inspiration from don't sing in perfect tune (sometimes worse than me), but they sound good and when i hear myself I can only hear the mistakes in my pitch cause there is nothing else to distract the ear (just a boring voice that's mostly singing in tune, but mistakes in pitch are highlighted against a blank boring canvass, you know?)... this tip actually made me not hear mistakes in my pitch cause there was something else going on that sounded good, so thank you for making this video... I'm still going to practise scales, but this has opened up a whole new dimension!!

Right! You are free to EXPERIENCE your voice when you're by yourself, but you become self conscious and start 'performing' when you are around others. They key is to make a mental shift to share your voice as an experience for the other person to partake with you instead of you performing to or at them :) I can help you with this in my courses!
