(AS NOTED IN THE VIDEO) When we speak, we have two ears attached to our head, and hearing our own speech, actually sounds completely different, than what everyone else hears.

Thank you, Bill. I'm quite sure that a professional job applicant would never submit a hand-written resume to get a start in their career, so why would anyone consider submitting a self-produced audio demo for an audio job? Good advice - keep up the good work.

Thanks for the free tips, Mr DeWees. Very helpful to me, as I am unencumbered by any self-inflicted notions of ''expertise.'' I love RU-vid and Google, and am always thankful to those who put the time into creating videos for free (that shit is time-consuming!). I love reading the comments for intelligent, humourous, and other notes that would add to the corpus of, well.....knowledge. I am honestly saddened that folks actually take time to denigrate others, especially, when they do not themselves make any productive contributions. To quote Rodney King: Why can't we all just get along!? Yes, I know it would be very Pollyanna of me to hope for a beautiful, caring, sharing world.....but I can keep the torch burning for the day that we will get there, right!? ….sigh!

I know this an old video, but I've been looking into maybe doing VO work as a side hobby to see if I'm any good at it or see how it goes and maybe make it a career. I've read (articles)/heard (via podcasts and video) a few different ideas about demos. I've heard you only need one main demo that you update as you improve, and then I've heard you need to do a new demo for each job you audition for. What do you recommend? How often should you make demos if not for each job? Thank you so much for posting these videos! It helps clear up a lot of anxiety I have about doing VO work. I've always wanted to do it, but have stage fright when performing directly in front of people, but I can film myself and record myself with minimal anxiety so I figured it would be a good way to get into something like that. Thanks again!

The easiest way to get material to read for commercial demos is from magazine ads. For character stuff you use scripts.

It seems to me these videos teach very little. They all seem to be marketing tools. How about the nitty gritty of V.O, like - recording, mixing etc?
@mikejvaughn
@mikejvaughn 7 лет назад
Or the nitty gritty like being a good actor?
@iplayfhorn
@iplayfhorn 5 лет назад
Steve Lawrence There are tons of videos out there which talk about those topics. And a lot of what Bill talks about is marketing, because even if you have a spectacular demo, if nobody hears it, it does you no good.

@@mikejvaughn Describe what you mean by "acting?" As you should know, people who do voice-over professionally are called "Voice Actors" regardless if they are simply reading copy for corporate instructional video or doing character voices for a funny commercial. A public address announcement doesn't require acting or getting into character. Just trying to understand.
@mikejvaughn
@mikejvaughn 2 года назад
@@chrisclermont456 "acting" refers to using any of the MANY different tools we use to accomplish the task(s) at hand. Even a general announcement should have elements of good acting: an objective, an audience, a story/message, and a desired response. The voice actor has to make good/brave/appropriate choices to accomplish any of those things. Just reading something will serve none of those goals and leave the recipient with.. well.. nothing... just meh. You want your public address announcement to do something, to accomplish something, or do you just want to fill someone's ear with white noise? The bigger issue with this video and Bill's "advice" is that when someone tells others they can make lots of money by 'just talking into a mic' they are either misinformed about the industry (at best) or they are knowingly lying to make a profit (at worst). To be a working Voice actor, artist, performer, whatever, you must know at least some of the foundations of acting, how to authentically connect to the material and access your full emotional range. Just reading with nothing else? Uh yeah... AI is already past that and will be very quickly replacing many VO people who have nothing to offer. Bill makes the majority of his income from his classes, NOT his work in VO. I had a friend who spent thousands on this shister and I saw the full material. The majority of it was bullshit, a lot it was about working for less than going rates, and the rest could have learned for free from other actual working professionals. I have a strong reaction to thieves and I guess that's why I call Bill out when I see his bullshit.
@mikejvaughn
@mikejvaughn 2 года назад
@@iplayfhorn Trust me... even the marketing advice here is dated, no good, and isn't used by those of us who actually do this for a living. But you are correct that you do need to be heard. So go make your own stuff... have fun project that are your demo. Don't pay thousands for a demo before you're ready. (also, demos aren't needed that much anymore anyway).
@mikejvaughn
@mikejvaughn 7 лет назад
Why does this feel like we're being sold a self-help program? So much mis-information. But the three bigger issues I'll address are: 1. Zero mention of any kind of actor training. Just a lot of basic VO business info, some tech stuff, and a lot of self promotion, but nothing about truly connecting to the material that a talent reads. 2. If you can't self direct, then perhaps you aren't quite ready to be a pro VO talent. All top VO agents, with the good, sustaining, union, material require talent to send in quality auditions from their home studio. 3. Last time I checked VO demos are mostly used to get agents, but your "program" promotes getting VO work without them. So.... what? Spend a grand or two on a demo that you post to the pay2play site and fivver? Every producer and agent I know would rather hear the actual work the talent did, and not some staged demo. Sorry Bill, but profiting off new and mostly naive talent while offering anecdotal (and often incorrect) information is unethical. I challenge your claim of making 6-figures as a VO talent. If you do, why not offer your VO advice for free or at a minimal cost? (and yes, I'm sure you're making the 6-figures from selling your "system." I'm sure you'll delete this comment, but know that I'm keeping a screen shot and letting others know what you're really about when they ask.
@VoiceCoach-BillDeWees
@VoiceCoach-BillDeWees 7 лет назад
Surprise!...no deletion necessary. I'm sure actor training can be useful (as well as other things not mentioned in this short video). I've not had any formal acting training myself and have not found it to be a hindrance to my career. Looks like acting has been your path so I can understand why you'd feel that way. Again, I'm sure very helpful for those who choose to do it. Self-direction is important...no argument there. Most clients also require quality audio for their final projects. It's 2017 Mike, demos are used FAR beyond talent agencies. This becomes increasingly true every year. I'm sorry to hear that you feel I'm taking advantage of the naive. I offer far more free content online than any other voice over resource that I'm aware of (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). The fact that I charge for my VO advice is irrelevant to my income (though I do make about $250k/year recording voice overs...not coaching). I charge for recording voice overs AND for coaching (both areas of my expertise)...I don't understand the problem. Shall we both make our VO incomes for the past year publicly available so folks can compare a union talent vs. a non-union talent's income? My accountant has already written a letter to verify mine. This is your opportunity to make SAG-AFTRA pround! Drop me an e-mail at VoiceOverExpert@gmail.com
