An alternative method is this 1S storage-charger from Tiny Whoop. It plugs into the battery and discharges it slowly to storage. The main difference is that it goes slower than most chargers, and it only does one pack at a time. For a cost of $5 each, you will probably spend less money and go faster with a series board. the tiny whoop discharger works fine for me, but they only work to reduce(discharge) the voltage on batteies. so if they are low already you 'll need to charge some juice first

I use the fractal engineering series board. You can use a jumper pin to select 1s-6s so that you can plug in however many batteries you want.

Fractal engineering makes an inexpensive switchable one that works very well too for 1 up to 6 batteries. I've had mine for over a year and it is still going strong. You do have to remember to move the jumper pin bridge to the appropriate number you are charging though.

I stopped flying for about 3 years and left all of my 4S 1300mah Tattus at full charge. They all sag out simply by hovering now. Time to rebuild the battery hoard, and discharge the batteries immediately if not in use! An expensive oof.

As someone who primarily flies whoops these boards are indispensable. I prefer the Fractal Engineering version, but even a handmade cable is fine. It's so nice being able to throw 12 batteries on my HOTA D6 and storage charge without having to check voltages first. Sometimes I fly 1s just because it's so easy and convenient to work with the batteries.

It is way more easy to just charge up every battery to full charge, then use the batteries for half their usual flight time before putting the batteries away for storage. The batteries will in most such cases be between 25% - 80 % and thus not take too much damage from storing. One could probably DIY some contraption were one could monitor the voltage of the battery while using battery with a motor/esc solution to get the battery at the voltage level one prefers / more exact voltage level. This can also be done on multi-cell lipos (2S and more), but that leaves the batteries unbalanced during storage. Not the biggest of problems, if one has made sure that one cell will not self-discharge to an unsafe level during storage. But for 1S batteries there is no balancing (unless you use multiple 1S batteries as cells in a multi-cell battery). So with 1S batteries I find it simpler to just use them for half their ordinary flight time, which puts them within a safe voltage level for storage.

Handy product for people who don't have the skills/confidence to DIY something similar from a 6S JST-XH (balance plug) connector and six 1S pigtails. I made those for each of the three micro connector types I have on 1S packs (I don't just fly Whoops), and always putting them at storage voltage after flying has *definitely* improved their lifespan.

Finally, a video sharing my concerns and not saying, why worry about a 5 dollar battery. There are great 4 port chargers for these 1s lipo's. They only miss a storage option. These kind of boards are great, but having 4 independent ports does sound like a more ideal solution. Connect, press storage, Wait.

It's funny how fast FPV goes, I haven't used the flying sandal board since the webleed fractal board came out, it's pretty similar, just has 2 more ports and can do both PH2.0 and BT2.0, goes great with the new webleed BT2.0 batteries

After watching your video, I grabbed all my tiny whoop batteries from my pack downstairs and have them charging. They needed a charge but also benefit from being on the warm steam radiator in the kitchen. The cold seems to sap their energy quickly. I look forward to watching your whoop racing video you posted. You are right, for all of us who know how a lipo is made up it is a no brainer to do this at home with cables, connectors and a soldering iron. We all have this flying around. But for all people who are starting or do not go into electronics and wiring at all, it is not that obvious. Great job Joshua. AGAIN!

I made my own version of that board, but I put 6 PH2.0 sockets on it in a 3S2P configuration, so it can deal with 3 or 6 batteries simultaneously. I also made a cable to plug a single whoop battery into the charger, using an XT60 plug, 2S balance plug (with the 3rd wire removed), and a PH2.0 socket.

Have been running the same 1s batteries really hard for 6 months with no issues, at least 100 outdoor flights on each using various aircraft. They get store/charged every day. All the Crazypony 650's died quickly, they never lived up to their specs anyway, tossed them. Having success with Tattu, EMAX, and GNB. Wish I would have seen this video earlier, could have saved a couple bucks. Just bought my 3rd & 4th ViFly Chargers from RDQ. The first ones off the line had some issues, thinking about retiring that one even though it still works reasonably well. The newer ones work like a charm.

Tinywhoop dischargers are the best. Get a keychain full of them and then any overcharged batteries you just plug in and it takes them to storage. Gotta charge up the discharged batteries a little but that's a much smaller deal than discharging imo.

I don't think charging batteries with different capacity in series makes any difference. What you say is completely true when building a multi-cell battery. You need to match the sizes, because when you fly a battery you use the sum of all voltage across the cells. A higher capacity cell may sit at 4.0V because it is not drained yet, while another cell could already fall at 3.0V giving you a total of 7V (3.5V average per cell) but you can see the problem with that. The smaller cell will probably die after a few such flights because you don't "balance discharge them". In charging though you can mix different capacities as long as you use the balance charge function. The charger will equalize the cells. If you charge without balance (which doesn't make sense since it is the whole point of this border it seems) it will just take longer to "balance" the higher capacity cells and I don't feel like the charger will mind that and it would be all the same for the cells I think.

Yup I make my own series 1s cables with ph2.0 cables, a 5s balance lead, and an xt60. Priceless. I have a 5s and a 4s one also. Store at 1C.

I just soldered a bunch of xt60 to PH2.0 and stick them on my parallel board and discharge them like normal. The charger gets confused because there’s no balance lead but it’s 1s so it doesn’t matter. Works like a charm.

Thanks for this video! It's going to help save a lot of peoples 1s batteries this whoop season. I love the ability to parallel charge (or series in this case) but I hate having to micromanage pack voltages so I just made a bunch of bt2.0 to xt60 connectors and charge/storage charge my whoop batteries individually directly off my d6 pro like i do my 6s packs. Its slow but gets the job done and keeps my 1s packs healthy.

One of the first things I did when I got a decent charger, after having only had a small 1S whoop for a long time, was to create an XT60 to PH2.0 adapter. This was so I could charge my 1S whoop batteries just like any other LiPo 2S-6S pack without any sort of parallel board involvement.

haha josh went ego super saiyan at the end ROFL, ive been putting my 1s batteries into storage charge when not in use since i started the hobby lol in fact, the thought of my packs not in storage charge would make me panic but my solution was to take the ph2.0 pigtails i had laying around and make xt60 to ph2.0 adapters for those that want to go direct to their chargers and for a cheaper price to achieve the same goal.. however i do envy not having a 4s series ph2.0 board

I understand the use somewhat but why not fly the battery down to 3.7 or 3.6 then just charge it back up to 3.8? I normally fly 10 packs down to 3.6 then use a charger with an indicator from BetaFPV to charge two at a time to 3.8 while I contemplate the void of nothingness.

Series Charging, that's what i used to do a few years ago. Plug them in, they are recognized as a big 6s or whatever pack and then select Storage Charge or Balance Charge, depending on what you want to do. I used to DIY my own series cables

Yeah, one thing I've worried about. One, 1s pack I use daily, so don't bother with it too much. But my other ones, I either put on a charger, with readout so I can pull them just past 3.8, or if I don't get to fly them, I have a uruav lipo killer, that will bring them down to storage.

Well I think you missed one point. The balance port is only discharging and the main port is charging. That means if you do plug in batteries with different voltages it will need to discharge the ones with high voltage to be able to charge the ones with low voltage to set voltage. Basically the high voltage cell will need to go thru an extra cycle. So I would still suggest using approximately same voltage on all cells if possible. It will go faster and will create less wear on the batteries. It is definitely not as important as in parallel because nothing vill short or break. but if you can sort them out avoid to much difference that is a good thing and should be recommended. Also most chargers won't do storage on 1s so a series connection is a must on most chargers. I just soldered a 2s conversion to be able to do this on mine. If I where to create a 4s series board I would put in a switch to be able to change it between 2/3 and 4s on main port...

I have asked for 1s chargers to have a discharge option for years and I don’t know why nobody has done it. I have been using the Tiny Whoop ones but got one stuck on and couldn’t get it off without mangling the plug and yeah, they are slow. I wasn’t aware of the one you used, so going to have to pick one up!

I converted my tinyhawk II and 1s batteries to xt30, has worked pretty well so far. I’ll definitely keep my eyes pealed so I don’t kill them all during a parallel charge though.

Just build or buy 1s to 6s cable. I posted a link but its probably got filtered. iti is about 10 per cable and you can use it in paralel and charge/discharge/store 6/12/18/24/30 batteries in one go.

another vote for the fractal engineering board, much more versatile than this. first of all because you can use up to 6 batteries at once instead of just 4, and perhaps more importantly because you have a jumper to set how many you want to use, so you don't have to plug in 4 regardless as here. excellent if you have only 2 or 3 "odd" ones with different mah ratings (e.g. I only have a couple of 850mah 1S). the flying sandal is good, but the fractal engineering board is vastly superior, in my opinion

Reluctant to start an argument over time-honored concepts, so will just quote from the GNB (Gaoneng) package insert: "Our testing also revealed that storing the packs at 3.3 volts per cell (high voltage 3.4 vpc) is optimal for retaining the capacity as high as possible." FWIW Gaoneng says they are one of the largest manufacturer of lipo batteries in the world. Do what you will with the info. I've seen similar numbers several times now from manufacturers.

Great info as always B. I've killed more whoop lipos than any other. My issue right now Iis that ive been on a 18 month hiatus from fpv due to work and life and just started checking my old 4s and 6s lipos lol(yes I know need all new lipos now, I accept cash donations for anyone who wants to send my way 😋) All put into storage charge July 2020 and so far 10 out of 15 6s and 4 of 8 4s and the solo 5s pack I have are still at storage voltage. Still checking the last few packs now. All my 4s packs but 2 already needed to be tossed into file 13 but the 3 new ones holding storage well after 18 months, I wouldn't expect less from rebel lipos 👍. Now hopefully after the holidays I can get back to fpv, I miss flying so damn much. 😢 already have the workbench full of parts waiting to get soldered together.

Finally. Serial has been the only way to charge 1s forever, but we always had to make our own adapters.

I wouldn't combine them into one battery if they're that different though. Usually cells are charged in serial, and discharged individually, so if one is fully charged, it will take forever.

It really didn't. My charger has a 1 amp balance current. So it discharged the 300 mAh pack to storage in just a few minutes.

I just plug mine back into my 6x 1s charger. Charge till about 3.9 and take em off. They rest at 3.85 for storage. Takes 10 min. Just set a timer to NOT forget.

I do the exactly same with my betafpv bt 2.0 bateries after flying just charge them for 10min on 6x charger and all have 3,80-3,85v. This is simple and so easy :) But i noticed performance drop about 20-25% flight time less after 100 cycles of charging.

When I got into whoops, I build a series board on a breadboard. It has a switch so I can charge in a 1, 2, 4, or 6s configuration. Capacity does not matter if charging single cells in a series configuration. The cells with be charged or discharged to the set voltage irrespective of capacity.

Funnily enough, I recently took some surplus connectors and made a 3S series harness to do the same thing. I have been using same capacity cells each time just in case - thanks for confirming that I absolutely must do that; I wasn't sure. After flying, I used to put them on one of those parallel boards that shows the voltage and pull them off when they showed 3.85-3.90V (I think HV batts are supposed to be stored a bit higher voltage?) but having to look at the board every few mins was a right royal PITA!

VIFLY 1S battery storage charger is on the way, 2 options, charge full or strorage charge, if you choose storage charge, it can charge it to storage voltage if it is below it, it can dischage it to storage voltage if it is above it.

Hi Josh, Regarding reduced battery life that we usually notice much more often with 1s cells, well i would guess primarily the reason is that they're built with lower quality materials overall.... But trust me and I'm speaking from experience of more than 6 years in lipo & lion cells, the number one reason which is controllable that reduces battery life is charging end voltage and discharging end voltage, and the well known Temperature So if you want to increase the cycles of any battery you've to compensate with those factors, i would highly recommend that you test charging a normal lipo to 4.10 end voltage and see for yourself the impact on battery life And remember lihv cells generally don't last as long as normal lipos, reason being that they're primarily normal lipos with slightly modified chemistry to give broader range of use, but what you pay in return is reduced battery life due to more strain on the battery itself ( charging to full 4.20 or 4.35 incase of lihv) really push these batteries to their limits! That's what I want to highlight BTW you're doing great for the community and i love you videos, keep it up

You could put wire links in unused battery sockets, so if you have just 4 batteries connected, link out 2 sockets and select 4s in the charger.

Just a heads up, you can charge lower counts of cells with the board, you just need to make a jumper to link (in the example of 2s in a 4s board) cell 1 negative to cell 2 positive, it will fix the issue and jumper past the 2 empty positions. The XT60 is connected to only the negative of cell 1 and the positive of cell 4 in this model, so when you only connect 2 cells you have a gap between the xt60 negative and cell 3 negative and as we know the charger is trying to charge through the XT60 and balance using the balance connection.

i use the banggood cable, it's basically the same experience, pretty useful. but i do wish i could find a parallel board for 1s, because there's only a 4s and 6s version, and i wish i could just leave one out. e.g. when i broke in 3 new batteries, i had to run extra cycles on one of my older ones just to have a 4-pack. plus i have 5 moblite batteries, and i can only charge/discharge 4 at a time. the fractal engineering board looks like a good solution, too bad it's US only.

when you tried just 2 batteries, try changing the charger from 4s to 2s before hitting the go button and see if its happy. the isdt8 seems to be happy doing 2s even though a 4s balance wire is plugged in.

That's nice for that type of connector but what about the BT2.0 plugs like on the BetaFPV 1S batteries?

I use a TinyWhoop discharger with a BETAFPV adapter lead BT2.0 to PH2.0

Good video. The problem with 1s batteries apart from the life span is not all the connectors are the same. I dont think mine with the JST connections would fit on this board. I have spent more on 1s batteries than I have on tiny whoops and I dont think any of the batteries work anymore so I have given up on ever flying tiny whoops again. Its not worth the investment unless you are doing it all the time.

Hi, Joshua. I moved my mobula6 to 75mm - but unlike on all videos on internet, it just doesn't fly well. Vibrations makes it unflyable. Problem only happens when I put 4 blade 40mm props on it, with native 31m 3 blade props even on 75mm frame it flies OK. I think it would be very helpful for the beginners if you could explain what are these filters, p I d thiks mean, but in simple terms and how to set it up. I found video how to use blackbox gyro data, but unfortunately there's no blackbox on tinywhoops =( Thanks!

Ive used my hitecX4 for years... storage mode, IR read out. HV charging, between 1S to 6S.

Tiny whoop mini dischargers are great also, that Flying Sandal requires 4 batteries to work. worked great till one of the connections fell off.

Can you used these to kill your puffy packs? I’ve got some plug dischargers for my xt60 packs but nothing for ph2.0 little packs. Those storage drainers from tiny woop would be great if they had a zero option!

So the one from Amazon would be the better option so you can charge any amount from 1-6 batts? Is my assumption correct @Joshua Bardwell

lipo's dont like to sit fully charged for a long time , its always better to keep them at a voltage above 3.7 volt per cel. Storage charge is just to prevent that it doesnt go below that 3.7 volts. i store my battery always at 25 or 40 percent. Just buy tattu batterys these are the same as the nitro nectars just cheaper ;-)

I rolled my own parallel board out of some stripboard and PH2 plugs, and I'm now kicking myself for not wiring it like this. Guess I know what I'm building this weekend.

As far as I know isnt ot also okay to charge different mAh 1s lipos in series as long as you select the "lowest mAh" for charging?

03:07 They don't need to be the same mAh either. The smallest one defines max current for dis/charging. That's it.

I had been parallel charging but in an effort to have my packs last longer I just bought a Fractal Engineering Series board. With that said how many cycles are you getting on your 1S Whoop batteries? I have settled on using the Tattu 300mah cells after trying Happymodel, GNB, BetaFPV 300mah as they seem to offer the best bang for the buck.

+1 on the Tattu batteries. I get basically the same flight time out of them as I do from my 500mah GNBs, which are heavier- I know- but they just seem to sag more and not hold as much capacity.

That's convenient, is it possible to do the same for 2s batteries with 6s charger (charging 3 batteries as the same time)?

IDK if anyone will see this, but I wanted to say I think this videos is awesome! Thank you so much for making and posting it. I have one request, could you please comment on this process for small 2S batteries? I'm talking about 180-200mAh, 7.6V 50C 2S batteries. The use is for 150g robots but I have to purchase ones designed for tiny cinewhoops (I apologize for the noob question). Is there a product for placing them at storage voltage? Do you already have a video on it? Thank you very much for your help.

Make an adapter and use your regular charger for maintaining those. JB also has a video on how to make a harness for quickly charge balancing them

When I fly a pack and hover around smoothly, and the voltage fluctuates between 7.0 and 7.1 Volt, I know that they will recover to 3.75 - 3.85 Volts each and I am happy with that haha

Joshua I have a question I hope maybe you can give me lead with as I have no one to guide me over. I have built a tiny whoop weight 23.8 g. with 802 motors 22000 KV. The FC is Betafpv 5A ELRS AIO. I applied their diff. All parts are top notch. On Angle mode when armed and drifts backward and increase motors spin until flipping over. In rate mode I can tame it but it's still hard to control. Do you have any suggestion or some direction I can advance with?

Sounds like your board needs to be calibrated for level, 1st tab on Beta flight configurator. To get JB, just catch him on his live stream

On the RDQ description it says that it will expect the board to I’ve a diff. Of only 0.3 V per cell as it’ll expect it to behave as a battery back, does this not matter due to the HOTA being smart enough to compensate? That’s why you had a diff. Of 0.5 v?
