Why zoos sometimes kill animals? | DW Documentary

The culling of zoo animals is an issue that most German zoos are reluctant to comment on. In this documentary we hear from zoo operators about how these dilemmas are dealt with. Even endangered species are sometimes culled.
The birth of primates, big cats and elephants in captivity used to make headlines. But now improved conditions and greater knowledge about how to care for animals in captivity mean that a growing number of zoos are running out of space. In Germany, zoo animals are being castrated, separated or placed on contraceptives to limit population growth. Is this the best solution for the animals' conservation? Or simply the solution that’s least upsetting to zoo visitors?
In 2014 the Copenhagen Zoo decided that male giraffe Marius was unsuitable for its breeding program. The zoo culled the animal and fed it to the lions, which sparked public outrage. In 2021 around 50 zoo animals were culled in Nuremberg. They included not just the usual sheep and goats for big cats to feast on, but also endangered species of antelope and wild donkey. Wuppertal Zoo has in the past fed a penguin, a kangaroo and a yak to other animals. Due to fears of a backlash from both the public and the media, only a minority of zoos in Germany are willing to talk openly about the practice. And a number of them are now calling for population management programs with the option of killing animals not needed for breeding. The zoos say it’s the only way to continue keeping certain species that would otherwise face extinction in the wild.
Is it right to kill individual animals in the interests of preserving a species? Can it be morally wrong but at the same time necessary? And do the answers to this dilemma depend on whether the animal is a goat, a giraffe or a gorilla? In this documentary, zoo operators speak with unusual candor about which animals they select to be killed.

Farmers and hunters sometimes have a difficult time deciding which animals to kill. Nature doesn't have this problem. Most of us have seen the troubling videos of animals that are sick or injured in the wild falling prey to predators. It's a part of the cycle of life. I think it's important for us to teach this to the next generation because life is definitely not a Disney movie. In the wild, there's no contract or agreement between animals when they have young or sick members. Allowing animals in zoos to breed freely would be very cruel. Enclosures would become overcrowded and parents would breed with their offspring creating sick or deformed animals. Teaching and showing this in a controlled environment will allow us to keep healthy and happy animals in captivity.

This really is a complicated issue, and believe me when i say this is something animalkeepers struggle with everyday. A big part of being a zookeeper is ethics of keeping animals. And most modern zoos are changing, i believe that in the next century or so. Zoos will stop keeping the harder to justify animals. Like great apes, big cats and elephants. As for the culling of animals. Nothing in life is more natural than death. And when done correctly the culling of an animal isn't a detriment to its wellbeing. The animals live doesn't decrease in quality when it is culled. its live is ended. And it is done painless. And as far as i know that rarely happens in the wild.

Public senstivity changes over time, but the truth is that we are living increasingly disconnected from nature, which promotes a Disneyfied vision of the wild. We can't afford to do that, when the world is racing towards the 6th mass extinction 😕. If you ask me, the most important goal of modern zoos is education - but if they try to fit in with the (warped) public expectations, what are they really teaching? So maybe zoos SHOULD talk openly about sensitive topics, such as the fact that carnivores aren't supposed to eat neatly prepared morsels on a silver platter... or such as culling.

Marius was euthanized in Copenhagen Zoo as part of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA), to avoid inbreeding. EAZA spans 41 countries and is involved in the breeding of healthy populations of animals and the choice was made to preserve the species over the individual. The alternative would be to send it to a facility which did not follow EAZA standards, which would be irresponsible.

It makes sense. Naturally animals are going to have lower mortality rates in the safety of the zoo than the wild, but death is all part of the balance and has to be artificially controlled in a zoo. Allowing animals to experience their natural family structure’s and breeding cycles may be crucial to their long term conservation. If we don’t provide this certain genes could be switched off and we end up with animals who are genetically incompatible with their natural habitat.

There is a major conflict of interest when zoos cull animals for food. There is then a financial interest to deliberately over breed in order to cut costs. For that reason alone, the practise should be made illegal or at least very difficult. While culling may be unavoidable in some circumstances, zoos should not gain financially from it and in fact should have to pay a substantial fee to be allowed to do it. That way the public could be reassured that the culling was the very last resort.

Finally. Surplus animals need to be used as food. This occurs in every husbandry situation. Animals die, and some cannot be supported. This is ultimate recycling. I wish it wasn’t so, but the alternative is to let worms and decay take them. Worse yet, they are discarded in an incinerator.

The animals are killed just because there was no other zoo in that country wanted them but there are hundreds of zoos in other countries and continents which are ready to pay a lot of money to buy new animals, so why not offer them these animals? Instead of buying new animals they can just pay the cost of transferring them which can be much lesser. I think the best concept can be creating some kind of an organization of zoos around the world with a data bank with available animals listed in them and whenever there is an extra and non wanted animal, it can be transferred to another zoo which doesn't have that animal and wants them. And even if no one wants them they can simply be sent back to their natural habitat in Africa or wherever they have came from.
@andrasvegh5916

Such organisations already exist, EAZA in Europe, AZA in North America and so on. The lack of space for male animals is unfortunately a global trend.

@faridjafari6356

@@andrasvegh5916 Those organizations only exist in Europe and America which their zoos do not have any lack of animals but there are a lot of zoos in Asia and South America which do not have enough animals and sometimes they buy animals from smugglers. By giving these extra animals to them you can save them and also help to reduce illegal animal trafficking. So you have mentioned a good point and there must be wider organizations in the world to include the zoos of all continents and international wildlife organizations can help to organize such unions and organizations.
