Channel utilization is one metric we use to gauge Wi-Fi performance. Understanding congestion at the access point (AP) level can mean a few different things.
A more standards-based term for this is Basic Service Set (BSS) Load. It is defined in the 802.11 standard and part of 802.11e. It was formally called QBSS Load.

I think BSS Load is an L2 utilization whereas spectrum utilization is an L1. I found that they don't always correlated. Often when the spectrum is full, the QBSS still show moderate utilization.

That is a good distinction to look at. I will plan a follow up to record BSS Load and SpecAn at the same time. I don’t think we will always see the same values. The AP would still need to check the medium whereas SpecAn is always on.

@@RowellDionicio My understanding of this is there is "Wi-Fi" and "non-WiFi" channel utilization. The spec an reads RAW RF which is everything WiFi and non-WiFi, where QBSS is Wi-Fi specific AND 4dB or more SNR above noise floor (typically -87dBm or stronger). Will the WiFi radio be "dumb" and show low channel utilization when the RF spectrum is high in interference? A side-by-side comparison would be interesting (run the spec an and AP channel utilization at the same time). Try creating non-WiFi interference and see what happens. An easy test may be to put the AP on channel 1 @ 20MHz and purposely put another AP on channel 2 near it. It would be non-WiFi interference from the AP's perspective. Cheers!
