Wibi Soerjadi became prize winner at the Liszt Competition in 1989, only 19 years old. He returned to the main hall of TivoliVredenburg to perform at the online laureate festival Long Distance Liszt on 4 July 2020. Enjoy his wonderful performance of Liszt's Dante Sonata.

Finally someone who doesn't rush 9:40 . I seriously can't believe it. The most beautiful melody in the whole of romanticism piano repertoire and we finally have a solid performance of it!!!

Yeah exactly! I plan to perform this piece with the Volodos Transcription and with Soerjadi's musicality especially in the middle part. I definitely feel like all other pianists rush it and the beauty gets diminished but certainly not here. The voicing and pedal control is absolutely impeccable.

Back then I recorded this piece played by Wibi Soerjadi on cassette (broadcasted by VPRO if I remember correctly) and played it dozens of times on my old stereo. Thanks for uploading the new version.

Ik kan alleen maar beamen wat ik een tijd geleden in een piano magazine heb gelezen.... Nederland is een fantastische pianist kwijtgeraakt toen Wibi besloot entertainer te worden. Verdorie, hij kan t wel zeg!

Je bedoelt: Nederland is Wibi Soerjadi kwijtgeraakt toen de klassieke elite hem als entertainer ging zien ipv fantastische pianist.

@@clairebergen6665 - Laten we het van een positieve kant bekijken en constateren dat de Nederlandse magazines inmiddels hun lezers (en hun gezag) zijn kwijtgeraakt, maar dat Wibi Soerjadi nog altijd de meest geliefde en meest succesvolle pianist van Nederland is. Overigens zijn uitvoerende kunstenaars per definitie 'entertainers', ook al mocht je dat vroeger niet hardop zeggen. De Nederlandse klassieke muziekwereld wist zich aanvankelijk dan ook geen raad met Wibi, omdat hij naast vakman met een gigantisch klassiek repertoire, ook nog bekende Nederlander was met een zeer breed publiek die niet vies was van incidentele cross-over projecten met artiesten uit andere muziekgenres, sporters, acteurs, gezagsdragers en mediacoryfeeën. Dat gold lange tijd als 'vloeken in de kerk'. Gelukkig zijn de tijden intussen veranderd en kunnen we gewoon weer praten over de prachtige vertolkingen door Wibi Soerjadi van de grote meesterwerken uit de muziekliteratuur.

I looked him up. Yes, I see what you are talking about. But if him playing “Lion King” on Dutch TV gets kids interested in playing piano, that’s worth it. Music is a big tent. My hometown Philadelphia Orchestra spends February playing accompaniment to films. It puts derrières in the seats and thereby helps pay for good soloists and world premieres of new works.
