Frank Mantooth and I both graduated North Texas University at the same time in 1969. We both were members of that elite jazz orchestra called the One O'Clock Lab Band. Frank really learned how to make colors with his charts and grew as an arranger through all four years of school. Even though he didn't become a member of the band until his 3rd year, he wrote constantly....hit or miss....and kept writing until he finally was satisfied that he was indeed a GREAT arranger. But he always maintained humility. He will always be missed by his former schoolmates and all the big band members who played his charts over the years. R.I.P.
+Vic Glazer Thanks. I never heard of Frank Mantooth. Came across him by stumbling across "Ballard for a Rough Year" which seems to be exclusively played by Japanese big bands. Beautiful arranging.
I run an amateur big band here in England (the original not the New) and I have about 10 charts of Mantooth. Seems that hardly anyone in England has heard of the great man. What fantastic harmonies he created. We just revisited "Sophisticated Lady" at last nights rehearsal.
Thanks, Vic. I met Frank at a Jamie Abersold camp; please understand that I am an enthusiastic amateur and can barely blow my nose. When I stood up for my solo he put all ten fingers down and smiled; I had permission to do anything and I did it. I don't think I have ever met a kinder person.
