This is really hillarious to read comments about diversity of the cast and casting a shadow on English history. The movie shows what this history is a male domination, full of people who thought the world of themselves and looked down on women. What's to ruin? You don't seem to change at all though because yoy do it again in those comments that neglect the amazing screenplay, actors work and camera work. You should be ashamed of yourselves, historical righteous puritans. By the way, the movie is great, in case you did wonder...

You should be ashamed believe that this type of casting is right. To pretend that Britain was a beacon of racial equality when it clearly was not is shameful

After a second consideration I would rather stay with my statement but add to it, that I am sure it was a conscious choice of the cast to highlight the violence towards women those days. It added to this story so many layers. Sadly, people seek in it historical 'truth' instead of reflecting on the message that women were driven to writing offensive letters to whoever, as the only means to show their suffering under paternalistic yolk.

A fair warning about comments here..folks have forgotten this is a film not a documentary. Historical inaccuracies in representing an overtly racist Britain is fine by me in film. I'd rather a mixed cast in anything knowing everyone got an opportunity. Imagine if every "period" piece about England was an all white cast? Seems like that's what a lot of commenters here would prefer...keep the white supremacy going. If you want historical accuracy, READ or watch documentaries. This is art folks. Reducing it to the simple binary of woke/non woke just exposes your mental laziness.

Ask I questioned the accuracy of this time piece. With my disgust with the colonizers, I enjoyed the dialog, brilliant, as Olivia Coleman is pure comedy as it can be no fancy filming just a pure cast member executing the script.

Given that it's based on a true story, set around 100 years ago, with all the actors in period costumes, it's a bit weird that there are quite a few non-white actors in it. It creates a completely distorted picture of a past when the reality was that outside a few small urban pockets, Britain was a pretty uncomfortable place for non-white people, who were a rarity. Why bother spending all that money recreating a past world, then ignore one very important detail? If you want a historical drama with a multiracial cast, why not pick 1970s Birminham or Bradford? At least it would feel believable.

I agree that the portrayal of non-Europeans in old movies was awful. I squirm with embarrassment every time I see them. Key and Peele's funeral sketch sums it up brilliantly. I suppose all I'd say is that two wrongs don't make a right. I want truthful stories, including uncomfortable ones about the past. I agree that there were a small number of people of colour in Europe, but it was a miniscule number and in 1920s provincial, where this film was set, there were virtually none. My mum grew up in SW London in the 1930s and she said that black people were so rare in her neighbourhood, she couldn't help staring when she saw someone who wasn't white. My argument is that this film sanitises the past as much as the old Hollywood films. Let's tell the truth, even if it hurts.

People know that it’s non-traditional casting, we aren’t stupid. It about POC getting work and challenging roles and having fun.
@BuffOrpington7
@BuffOrpington7 2 месяца назад
@laurencerawlins8663 That's fine in Shakespeare, for example, where realism is less important than the drama about human relationships. But when you've spent large sums of money recreating a 1920s British town, it feels weirdly anachronistic to not apply the same level of authenticity to the casting. I appreciate that not everyone cares about historical details, but when we start changing the past to suit the present, that can take us on a dangerous path.
