If someone ever told you that in order to take part in and enjoy this sport, you need a ton of gear and a massive car to transport it.... you have been totally misled! Windsurfing at it best is done with the right skills in order to maximise the performance and wind range you get out of the gear that you do have. In this video I am explaining how having limited sail sizes teaches you to become a better-skilled windsurfer by learning how fine-tuning and sailing technique can open up a whole new world of possibilities on the gear you have.
In this video I am also expanding on the things that you should rather be investing your time and money in, other than a wide range of sail sizes: Good fin ranges, an adjustable outhaul kit and time on the water sailing in over and underpowered conditions with the same size sail.
During this time with covid and the delays with regards to 2021 gear, I have had the golden opportunity to scale down for a few months from using 7 different sizes to only 3. This time has been super valuable to me and has taught me so many new skills that I would like to share with you in this video. I am also expanding on how using the correct masts in your Severne sails makes a huge difference in the range of conditions you can take on with the same sail size. Mental confidence is a big aspect of windsurf performance. Learning to hold onto the same size sail in strong winds, where you would have normally changed down to a smaller size is a golden technique to learn and mental challenge to overcome.
I hope you enjoy the video!... Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.
Stay tuned for part two where I will be talking all about getting lift and learning how to rail the board in order to widen your wind range and get top performance out of your gear.

Fantastic. I'm just getting back into windsurfing after 15 years. Back then, as a kid, I used a hand-me-down 6.5 Cam and a 5.0 RAF and loved it. I almost always used the 6.5 because it was SO stable! Last year, I started renting Severne rigs to get back into the sport and had access to every single size sail. But I always wound up on a 7.0, and a 5.5. The exception was when it was gusting to 40kts and raw fear had me experimenting with smaller and smaller sails like crazy. Now I'm thinking about building my own quiver, and have been thinking seriously about getting ONLY a 7.0 and a 5.5 - it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up when you said the same thing - I actually said it out loud and then you immediately said the same thing like 1 second later! XD I guess if you weigh 90kg's+, then you'll need to modify upwards a bit. Maybe an 8.0 and a 6.0, but still...it really does only take two until you're playing in seriously strong winds. Good stuff. Good stuff.

Awesome to hear that you've experienced exactly the same! Windsurfing becomes so much more enjoyable when one can take on such a wide range of conditions with less gear! Even up to now I still only have my 7.0 and 5.5 Machs (new gear will only arrive later this year due to covid) and i've been having such a great time on the water, probably one of the best training seasons! I found that ever since Severne Mach2 5.5 came out, that sail has been taking over completely the role of my 6.2 due to its powerful, deep shape. Definitely correct, a heavier person would upscale a little: One of my training partners is quite heavier and stronger than me, so he has found the exact same thing with his ranges... he mainly sticks to his 7 and 8.6, but when its super strong he is on his 5.5. He barely ever uses his 7.8 or 6.2 anymore! So great to hear that you are getting back into windsurfing and investing in your own optimal quiver. You are going to have such a blast on the 7.0 and 5.5 Severne Machs! Enjoy, and i'm very glad that my video helped secure your choices! 🤙😎

Thanks for your excellent explanations and sharing your advice. It made the same experience. It is interesting though, that this was all driven by the pure necessity, wasn't it? Somebody who has everything won't have a need. Who wants to to go through more than is necessary? You need to want to push the limits, I think that's the prerequisite. {However, on the subject of the adjustable outhaul system I found it quite frustrating, that you need a three pulley system at the boom, which makes that an expensive upgrade. On the sail you either need a pulley compatible eyelet in the clew (race sail, very expensive) or you try the Chinook pulley system, which is fastened in the eyelet. However, the eyelets have different sizes which makes that impossible on some sails, too.} 🤙

Thank you so much for your nice comment and great feedback! 🤙 Yes, you are 100% correct, those adjustable harness lines can become frustrating if the sail and boom is not compatible for them. I find that with the Severne gear, the adjustable outhaul is compatible with all my booms, even on the smaller sizes. It's frustrating when it's not all compatible to other brands. Sorry to hear about this frustrating situation you are having. I hope that in future gear will be made more compatible, because the adjustable outhaul makes. A huge difference on the water!!

And I was pondering: Should I go back to shore and change my sail? But then I said to myself f*** it, I got like 2 hours of sunlight left. I'm not going to spend half an hour changing my gear. And as soon as I had made that decision things got much easier for me and I really enjoyed the following 2 hours with a slightly too big sail :D

@@Beachbumextraordinaire ah I understand...its a pity that other booms in small sizes doesnt always accomodate the outhaul kit. @KarovanTonder
@KarovanTonder 3 года назад
Hi Albie, thanks so much for your awesome feedback and a very warm welcome to my channel! Harness line length is a very personal thing, it will be slightly different for each person depending on one's height, whether one uses a waist or seat harness and sailing style. However, my experience is that once I've found the sweet spot for my harness line length, it remains at exactly that position on all my gear. So I have a set length for slalom, for wave and for speed. Therefore, I prefer set harnesslines that I know is always at my preferred length. For slalom I use 26, speed 24 and wave also 26. It keeps it simple and I can focus my attention on other variables that will have to be changed during sessions, depending on wind strength, chop, etc. such as boom height, outhaul, downhaul and mast track positioning. I will make a video about this topic in future, I think many more guys would also have this question.. Thanks so much for bringing it up! 🤙🤙

@@albiemcmahon8846 Awesome! The adjustable outhaul is a super effective addition to your setup, it will make a big difference in the range of wind you can take on.. I haven't made a video about footstraps exclusively yet, but have in short mentioned in a previous video where I prefer to have them and at what tightness... For slalom on my isonic and on my fox I prefer them right on the outside of the board so that I can get onto the rails for effortless lift. I also prefer having them quite tight around my feet, because that gives me so much more control and leverage over the board... A few seconds before I enter a gybe I would wiggle the front foot slightly to make it easier getting out once entering the gybe. I also make sure it's not too tight so that I am able to fit in the largest section of my foot to help with railing the board and lift. I talk a little more about this in my 2nd part of widening your wind range and getting lift video if you want to check it out.. @@KarovanTonder Hi Karo, thanks for your reply!! I have 2 severne Overdrive, with cambers, 8.5 and 11 and Formula board. So yes, I'm talking about the tension on the outhaul, using those 2 different holes. Changing between holes, will give us more room to use the same sail in stronger wind? Or it just give more control? And if I use the botton hole, switch is closer length to mast, should I just keep boom length on the specs and tight outhaul till it touches sail? This way will almost stretch cambers killin power of the sail... is that the way of using that hole? 😁 Thanks.
@KarovanTonder
@KarovanTonder 3 года назад
@@estevaoberrri Awesome, the Overdrive Severne sails are amazing! So with regards to the outhaul setting: Mostly all my sails I use with the upper setting for maximum power. However, for super strong winds it helps to use the lower hole to gain maximum control out of the sail. With regards to the tightness, especially on the cambered sails, its really important to not have the outhaul too tight, it must have a nice belly in the sail and when planing, the sail must only touch lightly at the backhand side to the boom. It must not be so loose that the entire sail bulges against the boom, because that really makes the sail feel lifeless, heavy with lots of backhand pressure and loss of the sail profile. I hope this makes sense.... let me know if you have any more questions. I will definitely make a video about this topic, as I think more guys would also have the same question.
