This Old Grey Whistle Test, which was aired on the 24th of February 1976, was our (Widowmaker’s) first-ever gig. The live direct-telecast went out to millions of people around the UK. We were scared shitless, but it went well. Roger Daltry watched the show and we were invited to open for The Who on their UK shows for ‘The Who Put the Boot In’ tour, which was a real honour and a pleasure for us!
Luther Grosvenor (aka Ariel Bender) - Lead Guitar/Vocals
Paul Nichols - Drums
Huw Lloyd-Langton - Guitar
Steve Ellis - Vocals
Bob Daisley - Bass/Vocals

Who knew Bob would go on to write some of the best songs ever written? What a legend.

I remember Widowmaker being on the bill on the 'Who Put The Boot In' tour in '76. I was still at school and wasn't allowed to go to the Parkhead gig in Glasgow, just up the road from where I lived at the time. I was gutted because my favourite band, SAHB, were on the bill. I would have loved to have seen these guys too.

Thanks for making this available to view. I saw this band in early '76. They were a strong, tight band, typical of that era. This is only the second time I've heard them! I really enjoyed their performance - and the whole night as I recall, was pretty good. The iconic and legendary venue they played at [Nelson Imperial Ballroom], burned to the ground only weeks later. The site is some sort of social housing now. Little did any of us know that the dreaded punk/new wave nightmare was lurking around the corner. Looking back, the tragic fire seemed like a symbolic portent of the end of a great 'rock' era.

Thought this was gone forever knowing that the BBC in their infinite wisdom wiped loads of footage from both Top of the Pops and the Old Grey Whistle Test.
@christown2827
@christown2827 2 года назад
Most Whistle Tests still exist it's just BBC is so protective of copyright that anything usually gets taken down from RU-vid pretty quickly if put up. The Germans are more generous and there are a lot of Beat Club's and Rockpalast (Televised gigs) on RU-vid.

@@christown2827 No, the BBC deleted many episode's of both the OGWT and TOTP - fact.
@christown2827
@christown2827 2 года назад
@@williamwallace5857 Well VH1 seemed to have a wealth of OGWT to broadcast in the 1990's so they must have got it from somewhere. Recently unseen TOTP's were added to RU-vid and quickly taken off. I would argue the truth is somewhere in the middle.
@williamwallace5857
@williamwallace5857 2 года назад
@@christown2827 I'm talking about episode's of OGWT and TOTP from the 60's and 70's BEFORE the BBC decided to cease deleting the shows. It's common knowledge that the BBC deleted many episode's of those shows. It's not really up for debate since it's a FACT.

To save money , the Beeb used to recycle the tapes especially of sitcoms after their repeat airing, unaware at the time that there would be any potential interest from future audiences. Many classic episodes gone for good, however I think most of the Whistle tests survived
