Kogan's bright, focused tone suits this music really well and, even in the most demanding passages, it loses none of its quality. This may have something to do with his use of only steel strings - in addition of course to his supreme ability as a violinist!

Fantastic playing.. I can't think of anyone that played Wieniawski and Paganini any better..

Heifetz was also exceptional when interpreting either Wieniawski or Paganini; or actually anything else that he played for that matter...

I don't want to say who is better than whom, but listen to Oscar Shumsky! It is another wonderful interpretation

Arguably, I think high quality vinyl recordings sound better than digital recordings and my old Carver tube amp (after some modifications and fine tuning in my workshop) and B&W speakers perform better than almost all of the solid state models. Exceptionally good SS would cost tens of thousands $ more if I wanted to replace my equipment.

I agree that records have the best sound--richer, fuller. CDs are second, and everything else is noticeably worse.

i cannot believe this piece is from a mono lp, it's surprising

Presently Vinyl always wins against digital in music with wide dynamics because in very mute parts the resulution goes down to just a few bits, even if the whole piece is digitized with 24 or even 32 bits. It's the same effect as in photos when you use a high digital zoom factor. That said - this recording is IMHO the most exciting I know of this piece and Kogan sits on the highest cloud in music heaven :)

@@jean-pierremurrli3072 By the time where there would be a significant reduction in sound quality in 24 bits, those extremely quiet sounds would have already been drowned in noise on vinyl.

This is a great performance and though it is sometimes difficult to compare giant virtuosos, I feel that Kogan is slightly superior to David Oistrakh, whom I could appreciate live in a concert given at Purdue University, and followed after till I discovered Kogan.
