Connie and I head out on a two and a half week moose hunt into very remote Alaskan wilderness. We traveled by boat literally more than several hundred miles and checked out seven different rivers and creeks. The day before the moose season closed, we were blessed to harvest a trophy class bull moose. We were not after a trophy and in fact would have been pleased with a forty inch rack moose. We were meat hunting to fill our freezer for the winter and hopefully enough meat to share with friends and relatives. What we ended up with was a sixty two inch trophy class bull. Come along with us on this great Alaskan moose hunting adventure.

Hello my name is Lonnie and My wife is Connie.
Here at Far North Bushcraft And Survival you will learn about many long forgotten tricks and tips of the old time woodsmen. Not only will you learn about bushcraft / woodcraft but you will learn many things that will help you to survive in less than ideal "survival" situations as well. Come along and sit with me by the campfire as I delve into these subjects in a way that you can easily learn to then do yourself.
I will show you how to make shelters, gather food, use wild medicines as well as start fires with or without matches, lighters, ferro rods, etc

Amazing ! Perhaps not all of us received Angel wings as of yet, but in the video at clip 13:22 , some are fortunate enough to bare upon their shoulders , a set of bull moose antlers. Congratulations to the both of you Lonnie and Connie, patients, teamwork, the respect and love of the land and out of doors has great rewards. Best regards from Northern Canada.

Dear Loni and Connie, this is by far one of your best videos ever. It brings me back to the week I was fortunate enough to spend in Kobuk, AK years ago. During that time one of the villagers shot a moose downstream along the Kobuk river. Helping carry the quartered moose back to one of the houses in the village where three native women butchered the quarters on a large wooden table using primarily ooloos. A large pot was simmering on the stove and was cooking cut up pieces of the moose for stew which we ate for dinner that evening. Thank you for sharing your moose hunting experience with us.

I do. Hunting big game, like moose, is important especially since the number of Predators that normally hunt them has gone down (at least here in Finland). So when people hunt certain number of them every year, their population doesnt get too big for the area to support them. Which would lead in a mass deaths of moose.
@klaus3794
@klaus3794 6 лет назад
What about the human population? Is that not going to be far TOO BIG? We cannot control nature but we destroy it! So sad. Leave the moose alone, nature will take care, believe or not.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 6 лет назад
Klaus S I appreciate your principles. However in order for there to be life, there MUST be death. There is just no way of getting around that. If you feel bad for animals and decide that you will no longer eat of animal flesh, that is good and honorable but you are still literally killing the plants that you eat. It has been scientifically proven that plants grow better in a calm environment rather than a chaotic one. There are also studies that seem to prove that plants have a level of intelligence. The fact that you kill and destroy your plant food is in reality no more honorable than me killing an animal for food? There is just no way to get around the need for death in order to have life other than you taking your own life so that you no longer consume other beings lives. I do not recommend that personally. People who live close to nature understand this fact as they see it all around them in many many various ways. Nature *IS NOT KIND*. Nature is vicious and extremely cruel. I do not enjoy killing animals. However I do enjoy feeding my family good highly nutritious meat that has *NO* chemicals and is totally organic healthy and nutritious. We also have our own garden and eat fresh raw plants as well. In other words we eat very similar to how man has fed himself every since man first walked this earth. I can see and appreciate your kind thoughts toward animals but in reality, you are misled by political correctness and lack of understanding of how nature really works.

Sorry no processing videos. We just were too interested in getting it done and in the freezer to stop and video. A very generous neighbor thankfully loaned us a powerful commercial quality electric meat grinder to grind the burger so that we did not have to use our hand grinder that we have been using for the last 20 plus years.

Here in the south-east of Norway hunting with dogs is the rule. Mostly it´s a group of hunters teaming up, and a dog is let loose to find and mark the moose. A good dog will tell the owner what is happening by the character of the barking and the hunters will sit at strategic posts where the moose is likely to find a route of escape while driven forward by the dog. A few use dogs on a leash trained not to bark at all while finding a fresh track and locating the animal. A good trained leashdog will then be let loose and pinpoint the animal by not being too agressive or loud, but still keep the senses occupied with the dog in stead of the approaching hunter.

Raised my family on wild meat (elk and deer)'in northeast Oregon's Wallowa mountains 45 years ago. This vid brought back great memories. My wife and I wasted nothing from our harvests. Cracked the marrow bones and boiled them with onions, celery and carrots and canned the broth. Sure miss the real mincemeat pies we made! The majority of people today r raised on meats from the stores, they ought to watch how the animals they eat r treated and the conditions they live n, pumped full of stuff, fed unnatural foods, then maybe...just maybe they’ll understand the differences of the lives n which the animals lived, naturally healthy and free to roam vs unhealthy, not free to roam, lots n crowded pens walering (spell check) n their poo. It’s a shame many people don’t “know” what they r eating, don’t know where it came from, this goes for fruits and vegetables to. How do they think their ancestors got their meat in the 16th-17th century. Just Like Lonnie and Connie

Hello from El Dorado Springs, MO! Congratulations on a successful moose hunt! How many pounds of meat did you end up with? I could tell those antlers were heavy by the way you had to get up with them. The second bull you encountered in the river looked like a big boy! You guys take care!!

We never weighed the processed meat since we were mostly concerned with processing it and getting it in the freezer as soon as possible. Generally though most mature bull moose will produce about 400 - 450 pounds of processed meat. That second bull was about a 48 - 50 inch rack.

A moose clavicle bone works good here in New Brunswick to scrape and slash the bushes. Nice moose.

The scapula bone is quite popular here for calling purposes but they often times are not very durable. I actually had a moose scapula with me but it got too beat up and damaged to continue using. The oil bottle will be good for at least another year if I care to use the same bottle. I have seen pieces of plywood fashioned to look like moose antlers also used, as well as "action packer" lids. In the past, I have also called in moose using the calling "horn" to scrape brush that I was using in this video. When they are deep in the rut, sounds do not have to be real exact to work.

Some of the best, cleanest meat you could have. Nothing better than having a fridge full of meat for the winter. Lonnie any chance you could do a video on cooking the heart? Ty in advance. Btw how many points did the rack go?
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 6 лет назад
We do not count points here in Alaska so I do not know how many points it has or even how to count points ie what constitutes a point and what does not. Here in Alaska we measure moose antlers by their greatest horizontal width. This one was 62 inches. There are many moose harvested in that width range but not near so many in that range that have that kind of massive palms and brow palms. The palms near the front of the rack (brow palms) are not very common as most moose have no palms there at all but only long tines coming off of the main beam.
@jimlahey8919
@jimlahey8919 6 лет назад
Far North Bushcraft And Survival we usually count a point if it’s at least one inch long and longer than it is wide. That rack looked like it was a real big one compared to the ones here in Newfoundland. Although I have seen a 36 point bull, very big.

I am sure glad you took us along! Your rough editing and the wonderful lack of showing off in any way is a far better calling method in the YT-woods than the bunch of egofocusing paradaders perform if you want to attract staying followers :-) I´m glad I already subcribed so I didn´t miss this one. The comments on this being an example of discusting trophy hunting are far off, and to those who just feel sad: A humble hunter will also feel sad for the magnificent creature killed, along with feelings of mastering the task set, thankfullness for the food and afterthought of what could be done even better the next time. A real hunter does not feel victorious when taking care of the pray so it doesn´t get spoiled.

We did not weigh the moose so do not know but most mature bull moose will put about 400 - 450 pounds of meat in the freezer. The moose antlers were 62 inches across and weigh 67 pounds as of today. They proabably weighed approximately 70 pounds at time of harvest. Yes it took Connie and I a LONG time to field dress that moose and get him to the boat.

@@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival Wow that was a beautiful Moose that you got, what an excellent shot, he just stood there and fell in his own tracks you really nailed him good. I can just imagine the neck muscles on this Moose carrying those 67 lb antlers on top of his head 24/7, there's another video on here where a guy got a Moose with a 70 inch rack.
