When you find shit like this, you don't ask the perp to "explain" it, you run to the cops. Or if you're in S.Korea, don't even go to the police, because they bury stuff like this if it involves a rich and influential person. Just straight up go to the media or post it online. Make sure as many people know about this as possible so the police can't bury it.

The film described is called Cannibal Holocaust, and there's a documentary about the whole thing called Searching for Cannibal Holocaust, they go to the Amazon and talk to locals about its creation, talk to the filmmakers, etc. There have been a couple other movies that have resulted in similar criminal cases or really long investigations because it's suspected that what is in the film is not special effects but real. In the 1970s, horror films were a huge industry in Italy (Cannibal Holocaust is an Italian movie) and they made some quite graphic stuff. After that, Japan held the crown for making extreme horror/gore films for awhile. I always found it interesting that while morons worry about violence in fiction causing violence done by the audience, the absolute most extreme fiction comes from the places with the lowest rates of violent crime.

Lenient sentences infuriate me so much. Unfortunately, criminals getting out of prison to just commit new crimes happens in many countries. In Finland, we have a serial killer called Michael Penttilä who is on and off in prison because of our insane legal system. The first time he went to prison, he got 7 years, for strangling his mother to death, abducting two 12 yo. girls, strangling one of them to death, and SAed the another. Each time he got out, he strangled someone under a year he was released, some of them died, and some didn't. Only his recent murder he got a life sentence because apparently he didn't mean to kill his previous victims. He just liked strangling people. For example, his mother's murder was apparently aggravated assault and negligent homicide. But since in Finland, the life imprisonment is never a lifetime, he'll probably get out once again. The average lifetime sentence is 18 years. The longest ever has been 25 years. Last time he got out, the were articles that warned he was out and told were he lived. Luckily, we don't have anonymity for people who made serious crimes, soat least we know what they look like.

I always look forward to Wednesdays just because I know there will be a new Rotten Mango video. Stephanie is an exceptionally good storyteller. The same basic facts of any given case do not change, but the way something is told makes such a difference. She weaves a story that makes it so compelling, regardless of the case. Even when it's a case I already know well, I will watch her tell it because she does it so well. Having her now husband sit off camera listening makes it even more interesting. We're hearing her tell this for the first time, but we're also experiencing her telling it to her husband, who is also hearing it for the first time. It's sort of a meta experience that's really genuis. It definitely seems like it is his first time hearing it and it would be easier to genuinely listen for the first time than to try and pretend you are. Congratulations if you guys see this! You're a lovely couple and seem perfect for each other. That's a beautiful and rare thing. Cherish it.

I hate that it borders on victim-blaming, but god.. if only the wife had taken those tapes to police the moment she found them. And if there's one thing that people take away from this horrendous case, PLEASE let it be to make sure the children in your family know that they can tell you anything, not just if they're being hurt by someone, but even the secretive details of their daily lives, like the "cool guy" who invites kids into a house to play games. Don't make them too afraid of getting into trouble to tell you these things, because the main reason that children are so targeted by abusers is how easy it is to convince them to suffer in silence.
