Classic rock band Kansas guitarist Rich Williams tells the story of the band's 70s hit Dust in the Wind and how Kansas songwriter Kerry Livgren and the band learned some finger picking exercises from a guy and years later Kerry's wife told him he should turn it into a song because it was so beautiful and distinct. Kerry was unsure it would work but brought it to the band and BOOM it was amazing. The band loved it and recorded it and it became their only top 10 hit and one of the most played radio rock hits ever with a perfect vocal from lead singer Steve Walsh.

I saw them at a bar called skitzos in outside sioux falls. They started playing this song and a thick fog 6 feet deep came accrossed the road and thru the crowd. Full moon and a gravel pit with 60 foot high piles next door. The fog went accosted their bottoms making them look like the pyramids. It was so incredible and totally mother nature doing her thing. I wonder what the band members thought of it.

@@titmusspaultpaul5Kansas is a rock and roll band from the Great Plains state of, Kansas in the middle of the continental United States. They feature a unique sound, especially for their time in the 1970s, which combines acoustic and electric guitars, acoustic and electric piano, electric bass guitar, drum set and their identifying sound, the electric fiddle. They had success early in their career with this tune “Dust In The Wind”, as well as “Carry On Wayward Son”, “Point Of Know Return” and a minor hit in the 1980s, which I enjoy called, “Play The Game Tonight”. Dust In The Wind is very subdued and beautiful when compared to their more typical sound, which is definitely energetic rock and roll, a bit loud, but they had a very unusual and sophisticated songwriting style. It’s not a deafening kind of rock and roll, but I would consider it to be accessible and enjoyable for most listeners. The band was known for their outstanding vocal abilities with beautiful harmony singing, thoughtful lyrics and first rate musicianship. I liken them to another very popular 1970s group known as Boston, which you may have heard of. Very high quality music, not offensive at all, with a rock and roll/country/bluegrass style. Carry On Wayward Son is probably my favorite Kansas tune, and I think it captures the essence of who they are musically. Worth a listen, in my humble opinion. Cheers. 👍

I keep forgetting Joe Walsh was in the Eagles because Henley and Frey always did the vocals and Joe did pretty good vocals,, his lead guitar skill was imo better than Frey and Joe's lead solo or James Gang stuff was A LOT better for better riffs more and better licks and better change style.. Frey wasn't bad but he was a lot better at doing top 40 single pop tunes Henley too but Joe's stuff soars more,, I think Henley and Frey did seven bridges road but meadowlands was pure sublime, I'm out here in the meadow, part of an old Stone wall, sent here because he said so, waiting around to fall,, kind of like a mix between Bob Dylan and Dante or something...

@@micnorton9487 Um, you're forgetting a fretmaster in the Eagles at that time named Don Felder. The dude can really rip it up. Frey was not really any kind of guitarist; more of a lyricist. Joe was brought in to give them balls. And he did so wonderfully. The Felder/Walsh trade-off's are masterfull, none more so than on the song Hotel California. But they've since given Felder the boot because of monetary squabbles and in favor of Deacon Frey...give me a freaking break. I think the kid finally quit. Good riddance.

One day, I had been listening to a playlist with Carry On Wayward Son, and as I walked into the garage where my daughter was working on some shelves, I yelled “NO!!”, and she immediately started singing the guitar solo and doing air guitar for the song. We both laughed, and I jokingly hugged her and said “My work as a parent is done.” We still laugh about it on occasion.
