If you have cable (RG-6) already run throughout your home, consider using a MoCA network. I bought a couple of MoCA adapters. One is connected directly to my main Asus router and it is also connected to a nearby coax outlet. Another MoCA adapter can then be connected to coax outlet elsewhere in the home which will have speeds tantamount to a direct connection to the main router. I actually have a second Asus Wi-Fi router configured as a Mesh router (backhaul) that is connected to that second MoCA adapter. So it provides Wi-Fi or you can connect directly to the Mesh router. I have several MoCA adapters spread throughout my home and the signal strength is equivalent to the main router.

👆 THIS !! 100% you are correct and I have the exact same setup with my mesh using Moca from my house. It's a game changer with speeds are crazy and Insane using just my cox cable wire .

What Cat cable have you used to connect the Moca adapter to the router? Please share any details if you can. Thanks in advance.

I live in a 2-storey, traditional Mediterranean house with THICK concrete walls and WiFi has always been my bane of existence. We recently had a renovation on the ground floor, so I was able to install some conduits and position the main router in roughly the diagonal center of the ground floor, broadcasting 2.4 and 5GHz bands. Also, I was able to use all 4 gigabit interfaces and route Cat.6 cables to bedrooms, living room etc. I have the perfect basis for a wired-backhaul mesh system, and I've been DYING to see the WiFi 7 replacement for Asus' AC86U. Hoping to have it as my main router, and distribute (hopefully) WiFi 7 ZenWifi Mini nodes, broadcasting only 5/6Ghz with adjusted power, while the main router broadcasting in all 3 bands, helping the roaming of mobile devices. Huge fan of your channel btw! If you ever get rumours/news about upcoming "consumer grade" Asus WiFi 7 routers, that doesn't look like upside down spiders, please let us know 😭And also, review them as soon as they come out please haha. Much love from Cyprus!

Mesh lives or dies on the back-haul bandwidth. You are correct about updating a Mesh firmware causing problems, ran into that one (Netgear). Currently I use Asus XT9 Mesh. If you are going AP approach, investigate Ethernet over powerline repeater (turn encryption option on), that gets rid of the back-haul cabling issues and brings all the AP back to central switch.

Any recommendations for a good access point on a budget? Greta video! Thanks 🙏🏼 Edit: it would also be great a how to set up the multiple access points without interfering with each other. Like a channel assignment etc.

Thank you for your interesting videos! I have come to the same conclusion as you. APs gives you the advantages of both selecting non-overlapping channels, but also to use APs of different brands. I have a router and 3 APs at home with seamless roaming. In a couple of weeks I will visit a friend in Luxembourg. I will help him set up wifi in his new house which is twice as big as mine. He is not that overly interested in managing tech stuff, so I'll do it for him. Maybe he can handle a mesh setup, but I doubt it. Updating a mesh system can be tricky..... I will probably set up a router for him and 6 or 7 APs using wired backhaul. I can manage it remotely for him through a VPN connection. The only problem is if the firmware needs to be upgraded, which I am reluctant to do through a VPN connection.

Still so confusing. What if you always going to use ethernet backhaul but absolutely need seamless roaming and one of nodes must be weatherproof. Should I go for mesh or multi AP? There don't seem to be weatherproof mesh nodes out there.

I would use one outdoor AP and the rest indoor APs

i just found out i couldnt use mesh because both of my routers are connected to my LAN, but not directly connected to each other so i configured 2 individual access points, but i used the same SSID and password to enable seamless roaming between the different areas of my house

I would say there is a third option. A truly "controller" based system. Examples are of course a traditional hardware based controller not unlike a Cisco, Aruba or Trapeze based system. Or a software based controller such as Unifi (Ubiquiti) or a cloud based controller like Meraki or Mist. Now I know most homes will not use a enterprise based controller system or a licensed cloud based system but there are many reasons to run a Unifi or similar local host (usually a docker container based software) system and then you can scatter as many APs as you have wiring and the space for and only have to configure it once. Disclaimer I do run a hardware based controller system at my home with 6 access points so my upgrade options are limited.

If you only have 2 routers use mesh. If you use more than 2 routers use AP..linked mesh in series is a no go
@maxd5007
@maxd5007 Месяц назад
If you are happy for your speeds to be halved sure. 2 routers means double hops, which reduces the maximum speeds. My speed in my living room went from 900mbps to 470mbps by adding a mesh router with similar performance on the other side of the house. Having the second router operate in access point mode, means both are operating at 900mbps and the only roaming devices we have are phones/laptops that can manually select the correct network if the current is slow.
@jtz2268
@jtz2268 Месяц назад
@@maxd5007 But it comes at the cost of not configuring much of the routers that are to be turned to access points. In Asus Routers, you can't enable firewall and other features when they are turned into access points. With AI Mesh, you can and atleast with Asus, its possible to have AI Mesh while they are access points.
@venti4268
@venti4268 Месяц назад
@@maxd5007 with two routers The first is set up as router..the second as AP. I said routers for both AP and router because both can act as both AP and router. Of course you never use two routers in series. Æ
@maxd5007
@maxd5007 Месяц назад
@@jtz2268 that will only impact traffic sent between two clients connected to the ap, i.e. my family. Everything externally is still routed through the main router.
