I only brought up Joe Lynn Turner because he recently admitted he has a medical condition where he can't grow any hair on his body. He started performing without his wig, but said he'll still put a wig on when he feels like it. I just thought it was cool that he was like "Yeah I'm bald, who cares"

Not totally hair metal, but Frank Dimino and Punky Meadows from the 70s band Angel obviously have wigs. Greg Giuffria (Angel, Giuffria, House of lords) had great hair in the 70s!

This is a legitimately fascinating discussion! So much of what we see in popular music is a mirage, designed to project an image. Nowadays there really are no secrets, so the mystery is gone as well unfortunately.

Joe wore a wig since 14 because of Alopecia. Paul Quinn from Saxon started wearing bad wigs in the late '80's, early '90's. While there bass player was very thin on top. Howard Stern had Joey, and Marky Ramone on his show. And they were bickering back n forth, and Marky said to Joey, 'Your OCD!'. And Joey fired back, 'You wear a wig!'. Which im not sure if that was public knowledge. Marky's been wearing a Joe Lynn Turner wig for a long time. His hairline is pretty far back on there older records. Ric Ocasek(RIP). Wig. Bruno Sammartino. Not Metal. Wig. Theres a live KISS vid from Germany(?), where u can see Gene straightening his wig before going on stage. Again. This topic is crazy funny. Im digging the conversation.

Great video! You had a front row seat to so much of that scene, it’s always enjoyable to hear you talk about it. I just remembered, the first time I saw Extreme was when they played with Warrant and Dangerous Toys in ‘89. I’m pretty sure no one in Warrant or DT was sporting a wig, BUT…about halfway through Extreme’s set, Gary Cherone’s hair was starting to get really sweaty and matted down and you could see how thin it was. He did the rest of the set wearing a hat.

Gene Simmons wore a wig in the Animalize tour because he had cut his hair for a film. However, he may have worn one previously as he'd set his hair on fire a few times and so he might have worn wigs to cover the damaged hair up. Paul Stanley seems to have started wearing wigs around the late 80s-early 90s. He's not wearing a wig on the cover of Carnival Of Souls, but he is on Unplugged. They both wore wigs on the reunion tour, however Ace and Peter had their own hair for the first leg of the tour. Ace was using some kind of volumizing spray but I don't think that there was a wig involved until fairly recently. Peter Criss cut his hair short after the first leg of the reunion tour as they'd all dyed their hair black and so he wanted to cut off the dyed hair so as he could go back to his natural colour...but then they decided to extend the tour and so he started wearing a wig until the Psycho Circus tour by which point it had grown out and he'd dyed it again. Vinnie and Mark actually wore the same wig with KISS. I don't think that Bruce ever wore a wig with KISS, Eric Carr only wore a wig in the God Gave Rock'n'Roll To You video, Eric Singer didn't wear one until he came back and had to look more like Peter. Tommy wore a wig at first as he had short hair, but he grew it out eventually. He might have worn a wig again though, not sure on that one.

I first discovered Joe Lynn Turner when he was with Yngwie Malmsteen, who I always concerned glam metal. I didn't know he was in Rainbow until later on. Michael Angelo Batio Eric Carr in God gave Rock n Roll video

The wig thing is funny. Definitely worth a part 2. LOL, I think you nailed it. But It's hard to let the image go. Look at people like William Shatner and Burt Reynolds. Wigging it from the cradle to the grave. Britny Fox. Johnny Dee had the best natural hair ever. The rest of them all had wigs and extensions 100%

Ace came right out and mentioned he wore a wig on Eddie Trunk a while back, said he wasn’t hiding it.. But cmon, who wants to see a bald Ace Frehley? I’ll play along. He was pretty thin when I saw him about ten years ago before he committed.. Marky Ramone, another mention, I know, not Hair Metal, but still ridiculous, and he has a twin, so if you dig deep and find a pic of his brother, you can see how he’d really look.. 😂

Lead singer Stevie Rachelle of Tuff has admitted to his thinning hair. He now just wears a beanie. And he looks good!🎶

Btw…have you ever researched the women of rock and roll? I wonder if any of these musicians had wigs or extensions.😊

Vince and Mick never had wigs . I worked with W.A.S.P and Whitesnake several times ,Blackie and David Coverdale never had wigs ,actually David still has great hair ..Dee Snider, back in the 80's - extensions maybe ,but def no wig. I was with him only a few years ago, still has good hair for his age ..Paul Stanley has 2 different wigs, one for the stage as a part of the costume, black thick and teased, other one is the regular wig he wears offstage ..Don Dokken always had thinning bad hair back in the 80s, so he ended up with a terrible wig in early 2000s. Funny thing is, he showed up on stage with a different wig each time :)) . Ozzy still has good hair .. Dammit, Now I gotta repeat this on instagram comments ...

Michael Schenker had some weird hair things going on and very long extensions in the 80s, IIRC.

Ozzy doesn't wear a wig. He dyes it sometimes, but it's his real hair.

I'm thinking Steve Stevens has worn a wig for decades. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so.
