The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede on Thursday, led a colourful Road Walk with staff of the commission and other stakeholders in the anti-corruption corridor, amidst singing and dancing, as he called for enhanced and consistent commitment to whistle blowing by Nigerians, towards tackling the menace of economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption in the country.
Olukoyede made the call while addressing stakeholders at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.
Other stakeholders also advocated on the need for more affirmative actions against corruption, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajearo who said that most of the governors being prosecuted today are those who couldn’t pay minimum wage.
Activist DJ Switch who filmed the infamous shooting of EndSARS protesters, at the Lekki tollgate, on October 20th, 2020, has reacted to the judgment of the ECOWAS court of justice which found the federal government of Nigeria guilty of human rights abuses in its response to the #EndSARS protest, stating that the Judgement poses a glimmer of hope for truth and justice.
The court ruled on Wednesday, that the Nigerian government’s actions, particularly its use of force at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos, breached several international human rights standards, including articles 1, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11 of the African charter on human and peoples rights.
The court mandated the Nigerian government to pay N2 million Naira, in compensation to each victim named in the suit. The suit was filed by DJ Switch alongside two others.
President William Ruto on Thursday, fired almost his entire cabinet, following widespread anti-government protests in the country last month.
The protests, led by youth groups were triggered by proposed tax increases that Ruto later withdrew.
The unrest led to clashes with the police, leaving at least 39 people dead, and a brief occupation of parliament by demonstrators.
Willam Ruto stated in a televised address to the nation, that he was also firing the attorney general of the country but clarified that the office of the deputy president would remain unaffected.
