CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In a chaotic moment, Will Bill (Jeff Bridges) accidentally shoots his own deputy.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Maverick writer-director Walter Hill's version of the famous Wild Bill Hickok legend is a dreamscape western that is told entirely in flashback. Hickok's friend Charley Prince (John Hurt) narrates the events of Wild Bill's life while sitting at Bill's graveside. Hickok is played by Jeff Bridges as a mean, high-spirited, but gallant outlaw. He wanders the West, adding to his reputation with some well-chosen gunfights, and he meets up with characters such as Calamity Jane (Ellen Barkin), who becomes his sidekick for a time. After becoming a legend, Hickok signs up for a stint with Buffalo Bill Cody's traveling variety show. Eventually, he falls in love with Susannah Moore (Diane Lane), and his love leads him to tragedy in the town of Deadwood, SD.

This did happen and the guilt dogged Bill for the rest of his life so they say. He was fast and accurate with his pistols because he practised shooting, like Billy the Kid and Doc Holliday. Most people who carried a gun in those days bulked at wasting money on shooting for no reason as they saw it.

It was sad, because by nearly all accounts he really was a nice guy and bully basher. He didn't initiate fights, but didn't run from them either.

Not only that but bill was a civil war vet he had the nerve to stand his ground and stay calm when bullets are whizzing by and actually aim.

If Bills eyes weren't so bad, which by age 38 he needed help just getting home ,and noted that 2-3 feet was as far as he could see at night, He would have had that chair with his back to the wall, but I think word was out about his condition & lacked the same respect as in his 20"s, & maybe things would have been different. True American hero.

@@SWATKAT1 It had something to do with a dispute over a pornographic sign that Phil Coe hanged in his saloon, the tension started to create enough heat till the point that Phil pulled out his gun and shoot on the street, Hickok went out and you know the rest, Hickok was faster.

This move had so much potential. It could have been as good, maybe better than Tombstone. Jeff Bridges WAS Wild Bill. But the entire sequence in Deadwood with Jack McCall and the gang was god awful and made no sense.

That's what soured the movie for me as well. It started out as a pretty good biopic on the man, but then took a turn for the weird towards the end and became completely non-fictional (except for the last bit about Hickok being shot in the back of the head).

The material needed a better director and probably a better script. Walter Hill was out of his depth here. I think that he honestly thought this would be his "Oscar movie". The movie sucks...

"Im a union man, fought four years against your kind" such a smug response. No wonder he always had a target on him. Not to mention the crowd might have been a little rowdy and reckless but the man he approached wasnt causing the marshall any trouble he said "just funning marshall" politley and then answerred his question about where he was from and bill just hits him?? And beats up on him because of where he was from??

The only inaccuracy I can find is the fact Bill Hicock bragged about his Union service. You was a Union man for sure, but I've never come across any writing where he talked about it. It was more a fact than a point of pride.
