A night wild camping near Roughside Bothy, Northumberland, in the Hilleberg Akto. Shaun P makes bothy stew with venison and fresh herbs and spices and produces a bottle of gorse flower wine that resulted in a bad head in the morning. One of Northumberlands great (semi) hidden wild camp spots with the added bonus of a fresh water spring. A crackin' good night with old and new friends.

I like the hat! As you popped out of the tent in the morning I was reminded of Elma Fud!!😂

Hahaha, thanks Nick, maybe I’ll keep the hat around a bit longer, nowt wrong with looking like Elmer Fudd 😂

The hat is ok for remote woods Graham but i would err on the side of caution in public, i thought you were on a solo at first then the gang appeared, i thought a roughside solo was a bit brave, the stew looked good and i can agree with the bothy hangovers, great vid

Greeting from NZ. I spent a lot of time at Roughside as a kid in the late 60s early 70s, as my parents leased it. Back then there were no trees around it and you could see for miles. Dad could drive his old Vanguard up to the house, and they had it fully furnished with nice gardens. The family photo album is full of photos of us there. Went back to check it out in 88 when i was back in the UK on a working holiday, but it was derelict.

That’s fascinating, thank you. Amazing to hear from someone who knew the place prior to its use as a bothy. It must have been planted soon after you left it as I’ve tried (inexpertly) to age the surrounding trees and they seem to be 50-60 years old. The photograph as an open farmhouse present such a different aspect. Great to hear about the prior history of a place from someone who knew it firsthand 👍👍

@@grahamswildcamping Yeah the trees were well established when i was there in 88, i thought they were for timber and would have been felled by now.

@@uhtred7860 the trees have been felled within a couple of hundred yards north of the bothy so it might not be long until Roughside stands proud again.

Yeah, sometimes nights just take on a life of their own, no matter what you’ve got planned 😂. Stew was pretty good, especially with a beer. Cheers for watching 👍

Another bothy visit, I'd love to live out there! Your friend, my namesake is absolutely a splendid cook, I can only imagine how hearty & delicious that strew must have been. Northumberland seems to be full of wild open spaces, must be nice in the summer. Your hat? It looks a bit left of center, but on the other hand is it a comfortable hat? A hat with a peak keeps driving rain out of your eyes , I looked around for a hat,a sow wester, like the hat the man wears on the packet of fishermen friend hot mints, but I can't seem to find them. But who cares what it looks like, unless your trying to win a beauty contest. Lol. Nice poetry, I've noticed most campers seldom read good literature, it's the phone all the time,so nice touch, really interesting videos, thanks.

Thank you very much for your comments, Northumberland can be a lovely place to hike and camp with the Cheviot and Simonside Hills, the endless moorland and it’s caves and castles. I’ll pass on your words to Shaun, he’ll be chuffed. Thanks for watching and ATVB, Graham 👍👍

Yeah was a good night that one! Roughside is a canny bothy and there’s good camping/ hammocking space outside too, mind I haven’t been since the storm Arwen though. Thanks for watching ATB 👍

Been looking at places to go when me and a mate are off at the end of the month. This has made my mind up :-) Hammock in the trees and a visit to the Bothy. Not to mention hunting that Spring 🤣 That Bothy Stew looked amazing!!

Sounds like a plan for a great night. Just follow the path north of the bothy along the valley, the last few yards to the spring are almost overgrown with ferns. Happy hunting!

Roughside can be a bit of a risk for noisy folk, but to be fair I’ve mainly found everyone still quite friendly. Not a bad idea to hammock or camp one night and the next one in the bothy. Nice one. Love the random stuff you can get at Aldi/Lidl 👍

@@DMAC1966 it’s easier to find in autumn when the ferns have died back. Follow the path north from the bothy to where the trees have been harvested and it’s a small side trail to the right, pretty much covered in ferns at this time of year
