Hello Michael, glad you enjoyed the video and great that it brought back some memories for you. Glen Etive is a magical place. The big and wee Buachailles come into view (and present a wonderful mountain-scape) when paddling across the loch. When viewed from the middle of the loch, they appear so different in character; quite distinct from the Glencoe aspect, which we all love and are so familiar with. I've also spent many happy days scrambling around on those hills. I have fond memories of airy nights spent on wee ledges during settled weather, and of hunkering down, deep in the coirries, during winter storms. Ah, happy days. In fact, I've been intrigued by the bike-packing gear, which looks cool and super-compact on the bike. However, now that I'm officially an old guy, I like a bit of comfort when camping :). And, the camera gear I carry for filming adds considerably to my load. So going old school with panniers and rack-bag seems to make sense. It also allows me to use my old gear. I'm familiar with long distance cycling (I cycled through much of SW China some years ago) so rolling along at a sedate pace suits me quite well. I could have tried a cast or two in deep water too. I'll certainly consider it for next time. In fact, I didn't really need the logs and kindling as there was plenty of dry flotsam to burn, but I did enjoy the heat from the logs and the ease of getting the fire going, especially in the morning. My memories of being homesick for Scotland got me started with the cameras. Photography has always been a part of my work. However, I seldom carried a camera during my Scottish adventures. I decided to start recording some of my wee adventures and take the footage with me on my overseas tours, to be viewed when I was missing home. This progressed to sharing them on RU-vid, which has now become a full-time hobby. I have been blessed to make some good 'virtual' friends and have some wonderful subscribers. @@Itsthejourneynotthedestination Aye, you're absolutely right Stuart. I was actually in the glen during the making of this vid to check out the impact of the hydro' works. The new tracks are good for cycling but are pretty brutal on the landscape. I guess they will improve with age but for me, the glen has lost its sense of remoteness. I'm glad they bypassed the wee woodland reserve though, that is still a very bonnie spot. ATB, Dave

I have a couple of ideas for some epic adventures. I think the channel would benefit from a few more quality videos. The 'local walks vids' and 'channel update videos' are ok, but tend to be a bit repetitive. So, I haven't done much filming recently, but I might record a wee update over the next few days. Hi Rob, I was going to try a cast or two but really just ran out of time. I spent a fair bit of time on the first day checking out some plant habitats in the woodland beyond (east of) Narrachan and on day two I had to get home at a reasonable hour. The most luck I've had fishing Etive is closer to the mouth of the loch (either side of the falls). There are also some really obvious spots with deep water close to shore but there are fish farms in the vicinity and I tend to avoid fishing close to those. ATB, Dave

Thanks David. Glad you enjoyed the video and dialogue. The lockdown will have a major impact on my adventures, filming and, of course, the channel. I live adjacent to farm fields, woodland and a river so will be able to take my daily exercise in semi-wild isolation. Whether it is acceptable (socially or otherwise) to carry the camera with me is debatable. I'll give it some thought. I'm thinking about reworking some of the footage I've shot over the past 18 months to see if I can come up with some entertaining short videos. I'm also wondering if there might be some interest from subscribers in a video or two of some of my outdoor gear with commentary on behind the scenes stuff such as gear selection (and maintenance) in preparation for trips etc. Whatever I decide, I'll make sure there is a channel update. Thanks Kris, The 'quiet' side of the loch has some nice places to camp but beware of the vehicles heading for the hydro works. The lower reaches of Glen Kinglas have lost all appeal (at least for the time being) due to the hydro activity. I love the natural woodland in Glen Kinglas. The main reason for my visit was to see how it was faring during the construction. Thankfully it is being protected. I'm hoping that the tranquility I've long associated with the glen will come back once the works are complete (about a year from now I guess) ATB, Dave

Hi Jec, welcome to the channel. Parking is not normally a problem except in some ‘hotspot areas’, which I tend to avoid. The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park can be particularly busy and payment is often required for parking (and camping). Throughout most of the Highlands and Islands, it is relatively easy to find a place to leave the car and head off into the hills. The key is to park responsibly and consult with locals if in doubt. On a recent trip to Oban, I left my car at a B&B, giving the owner a few pounds for use of the space. I then enjoyed a worry-free cycle camp for a few days, safe in the knowledge that my parked car wasn’t causing offence to anyone. On the Etive trip, I left my car in the forestry carpark, tucked away in a corner. That is pretty common practice for hill-goers and wild campers. Hope this helps. ATB, Dave

Thanks John, I’m sitting watching the Scottish news. It seems that there is an end in sight to the lockdown. I had the vaccine this afternoon. I’m raring to go and get some adventures underway. I loved my travels in the 1970’s. it was a magical time in the hills....no paths or tracks on the Munro’s and lots and lots of empty space. But, when you did meet a fellow hiker or camper, it was a great chance to share stories and info’. Stay safe John, and who knows, we might bump into each other in the hills. Thanks Derek. Yes, I think more restrictions for outdoor exercise, especially in the highlands, are inevitable. My mountaineering club is affiliated to Mountaineering Scotland and I have contacts in the MR teams so I should be able to keep abreast of the advice. I hope to continue getting out to do some filming but will tailor my trips to ensure compliance. I'm fortunate to live adjacent to fields and woodland, so might just camp and film there. The Pentland Hills are also only a short bike ride away so I do have some options. In the meantime, I'm getting my outdoor fix by hiking through the local woodland at dawn and spending most of the day working in my garden. Stay safe too. ATB, Dave

Perhaps we have been in each others company before? I was in the RM from 81 to 90 and involved in numerous exercises in the area. Quite often based at Kinlochleven..

@@kennethgrassick9834 I joined a group of lads on a multi-day traverse of the Cairngorms summits in atrocious weather in the 1990's (I'd have to check my notes for exact dates). We zigzagged over the ridges, dropping down into the lairigs to bivvy, them under ponchos and me in a g-tex bag. We parted company on The Devil's Point, them heading for Aviemore (and then Arbroath) by way of the Lairig Gru but I carried on for a few more days to take in the Feshie hills. I ate well on gifted rations during final couple days! On another memorable occasion, I was out with friends from the Queen's Own, high on the ramparts of An Teallach. Despite near-zero visibility, we thought we were moving well, only to be silently and thoroughly outclassed by a group of Royal Marines as they marched past on the narrow ridge, disappearing into the mist without as much as a whisper.

You have a good memory for all your outdoor adventures. I left the Royal Marines for pastures new in 1990. During my time we were always involved in serious mountain training in Scotland (anywhere from Skye to Cairngorms to Lochaber) from October to December in preparation for winter deployments to arctic Norway. Wonderful times and great memories.

@@kennethgrassick9834 I've kept notes of my adventures pretty much since boyhood. I sat down a couple of years ago and wrote a book of sorts; 175,000 words detailing some of my adventures in Scotland and the Himalaya. I'll never publish (I'm pretty sure publisher's wouldn't be interested) but I greatly enjoyed delving into the recesses of my memory and scanning my notes, annotated maps and hill lists. My adventures are pretty tame now but it's great having the memories. Writing helped refresh the memories, which makes some of today's travels all the more valuable. The Royal Marines are the world's finest. You should write down your own account of times serving. I have family and friends who served and greatly enjoy listening to their tales and anecdotes, both happy and sad.

@@Kg51Edelweiss Hi John, I can't remember the model of the rear bike rack. I picked it up in the Edinburgh Bike co-op. I chose it because it is fairly heavy duty. I often carry logs and coal so was looking for something quite robust. I swapped the bolts for high tensile steel ones. If you plan on carry heavy weight over rough ground it is also worth investing in thro' axles on the wheels. I searched for months to find the front carrier. It is mounted to the suspension forks with jubilee clips and is surprisingly strong. The front panniers are an ancient set of Edinburgh Bike Coop's own model (sadly, I don't think they make them now). I tend to put bulky but lighter weight items up front (sleeping bag, spare clothing etc).The modern approach to bike-packing uses lightweight, compact gear that attaches to various points on the bike. It all looks great and I'm sure it works for some folk. But, I tend to prefer the 'old school' approach with racks and panniers. A few years back, I cycled several thousand kilometres through SW China. In spite of the mountains and huge climbs, I opted to travel 'heavy' and didn't regret it, especially on cold nights at altitude where I enjoyed the comfort of a good tent and sleeping bag with plenty of food and fuel for cooking. I'll try to find the name (or supplier) of the front rack for you. The Ortlieb bags are good but expensive. My first set lasted over 20 years but I managed to put a rip in one of the bags featured in the video during its first ever outing. Hope this helps. Cheers, Dave

I lived a pretty solitary life in the Sino-Himalaya, over many years, so am at ease in my own company. In Scotland, and the Himalaya, my partner regularly joins me on all sorts of adventures and escapades. If you check out more videos, you're sure to see her. Mo is seasoned camper and hiker and loves the wilderness. Some people have asked about my preference for wilderness travel, solo or in company. For me, they are two sides of the same coin. Hi Gordon, thanks for viewing and commenting, much appreciated. Yes, you're correct, Loch Etive is a sea loch. I'm always mindful of rising water levels when camping by the coast or on loch or river sides. There have been a few accidents over the years with tragic consequences. It's worth checking tide times and levels when coastal camping, even if you're not travelling by kayak. Wind can also make a big difference with wave action carrying the water a long way beyond the high water mark. The night I camped there was pretty calm with a modest high tide, in the region of 4 metres if my memory serves me. I do a fair bit of camping on the west coast and on the islands and know that tide lines are not to be trusted. Similarly, when camping by rivers and burns, previous high water marks are not necessarily reliable indicators of safe zones. The floods that hit Deeside a few years ago should serve as warning to be wary of camping close to major drainage systems. When the Quoich flooded and took out the bridge, many popular wild camping spots were wiped out. I believe a camper lost his life during that flood; a terrifying ending for anyone. I filmed a wee video last winter of an overnight camp (during a storm) above the Quoich. (I think) in the early part of that video I mentioned looking for shelter from wind and possibly also rising water if the snow melted. Likewise, when I camped in the Lost (Forgotten) Valley, I was very mindful that the valley is essentially a large drainage system and subject to flash floods. Many thanks for pointing this out. Good morning Mark, well it won't be easy riding and there are sections that will, in my estimation, require hiking. Crossing the numerous streams that pour down from Beinn Trilleachan will pose a challenge on the bike, especially if there has been recent wet weather. What is not obvious on the map, are the gullies formed by the streams. Dropping down into these and climbing back out on the bike will be tough going, especially as there are round-shaped boulders in the stream bed. These rocks are pretty slippy when wet. Having said that, it is a fine route with a mix of easy sections to counter the tougher sections. The Land Rover track, which starts a little before the house at Barrs, offers a fast cycle with some nice undulations. However, be aware that there are a number of locked gates along this track. Also worth bearing in mind that, from the end of the public road in Glen Etive to the start of the aforementioned track is only a distance of around 5 km, so even if you need to push the bike on parts of that section, it is relatively short. (I'm getting a bit older now and would probably have to push the bike most of that section, but that wouldn't deter me from giving it a go). In summary, I doubt you'd be able to cycle the entire route, but the hiking sections should be fairly short and the Land Rover track section will offer easy cycling. The road section, past Bonawe is also easy and scenic. You might meet some quarry traffic on the public road but the truck drivers are pretty considerate of other road users. @@daveoutdoorsscotland2854 thanks for the reply Dave! That’s the reply I was hoping for, hiking the bike shouldn’t be an issue as I’ll be travelling fairly light as I’m doing it somewhat supported. Looking a bit closer at the map I can make out some of the gullies now, it looks like it’ll be an interesting challenge! So once the Land Rover track starts it runs all the way down to Bonawe? Just the first 5km after the Glen Etive car park will be a bit tricky? Hopefully this saves me either having to come up and do a trial run or not doing this route, I really want to cycle the valley down to Glen Etive without having to go back on myself. Keep making the videos 👍🏻

@@markrichardson407 Hi Mark, yes, once you are on the Land Rover track, it will take you all the way to the road, with good bridges crossing the streams. There is sometimes a by-pass for the quarry (if they are working or blasting) but it is also on a good track. I think you will really enjoy the adventure. You will get a great view of the slabs (much loved by rock climbers) before you enter the trees. A great route with mixed riding. ATB, Dave

@@markrichardson407 Forgot to mention car parking. There are lots of places where you could leave the car. Personally, I’d park a fair bit before the end of the public road and use the road for a wee warm up on the bike before you hit the track. The end of the road can often be quite busy (with hill walkers cars) but the bike will give you more flexibility. I perhaps should mention that there has been some tensions between wild campers and landowners in the Glen. Don’t worry about this, you have right of access. Just park considerately and leave any gates as you find them and it will be fine (I’m pretty sure you know all this, so apologies if it sounds as if I’m preaching. I just want you to have a great time). ATB, Dave

The plan is to leave the “support team” (my parents in their campervan) at Glencoe so that should be a nice warm up and then hopefully get all the way to Inveraray! This is probably the most ambitious day of the entire trip, but I’m hoping I can link it all together 🙂

Hello Peter, the track is much improved because of the hydro work in Glen Kinglass. I would say the track is rideable on a Brompton, certainly from Bridge of Awe to Armaddy. There are now two tracks in Glen Kinglass. The old track meanders through the woodland. It is rough (rocky, not boggy) but probably ok on a small wheel bike. The new track is on the south side of the glen/river and has a good surface (it is the track used by the hydro' construction vehicles) Just be aware, you'd possibly have to get off an push the bike up one or two of the steepest hills but I wouldn't be put off by that. The deeper you go into Glen Kinglass (beyond the hydro' works), the rougher the track becomes, until it eventually reduces to a stalkers track, which wouldn't be rideable on your Brompton. So, it would be an out and back journey. Hope this helps. ATB, Dave

It looks as though there’s a ‘road’ at each end with ‘track’ only for the six miles between Glenkinglass Lodge and Clashgour. Also three fords just to south west of Clashgour. Just wondering if that’s the impassable section, and how you fared crossing the rivers? My bike is a Brompton Electric so great where it can get traction but has same 1.25 inch tyres of an ordinary Brompton so prone to sink into sand and mud!

@@petergilbert72 Yes, that's correct. The route from Victoria Bridge to Armaddy is a well known low level hike or mountain bike route. I've hiked it a few times but not since the hydro works started. The main reason for visiting during this film was to check out how much intrusion the works are causing (considerable in my opinion). I'm not sure how far the improved track goes beyond Narrachan (because I turned back there to set up camp on the shore). My guess is the improved track will end at the lodge but it might extend a bit further. Although it's a relatively short distance on the stalkers track, it is quite rough going. Definitely doable though (providing there is no snow). If you're prepared to put in the effort, it would make a great expedition, but I do think a mountain bike would be a lot easier than your Brompton (I'm a fan of Bromptons btw). ATB, Dave

Good morning. Thanks for commenting on the vids, very much appreciated. There is no public car access to that part of Loch Etive. Although its not a particularly long way, the track is quite hilly so might be a wee bit tough for a six year old. Take a look at some of my other vids and you might spot a few easier to reach locations. Glen Affric would be suitable for a (freshwater) loch side camp with stunning mountain views. The coastline close to Arisaig and Morar also offer good locations for camping with sea and mountain views (there are also lovely official camp sites in this area). The Ardnamurchan peninsula is also worth considering for camping in the wild. Again, there is also a beautiful campsite there. Some of the FC carparks in Scotland allow overnight parking. You can't camp in the immediate vicinity of the carpark but you can walk a short distance to find a suitable spot to camp. In summertime, some of the carparks have pay and display meters, set only for 24 hours parking. If you want to stay for few days, just buy enough tickets to cover your stay and pop them on the dashboard. They will all be dated for the same day but they will understand your intention. I've never had any bother leaving my vehicle in these carparks. Hope this helps.

hi dave can i pick your brain a little? i went up this way today parked up & there was like an archery section in the wood next to the car park i followed the path up to the right and got round to what looked like house stopped there next to a little tree with a little patch or grass by the water had some lunch and turned back. was i going in the correct direction? thank you

Good morning Paul, thanks for viewing and commenting, very much appreciated. The backpack (dry bag) contains my cameras (2 DSLR's and 2 GoPro's), padded out with my jumper. The cameras are vulnerable to water and vibration damage, hence the dry bag. But totally take your point, I don't travel light.....might have a go at the bike-packing some day. I cycled across parts of Asia some years ago (I was away from home for 3 years, but not on the bike every day) and carried less gear on that trip than I did on my wee jaunt to Etive. I don't mind travelling heavy, especially on short trips, but it is good to mix it up a bit so I might film a lightweight trip. Hope you stick around and take a look at some more of my vids. ATB, Dave
