A hike around the beautiful island of Inishturk which lies 15km off the coast in the far west of Ireland. The ferry crossing takes one hour. Fantastic cliffs abound on the western side of the island and at this time of year they were full of nesting sea birds. I was even buzzed by a Peregrine Falcon! A great wild camp just above the sea cliffs with a good nights sleep. Water was scarce after weeks of dry weather, though there was enough of a trickle to allow me to cook and make tea. A great trip and I would highly recommend a visit for the day or for an overnight stay👍👍

It's pretty nice when your most inspiring RU-vidr gives you a shout out...thanks for that Gerry, I'm very flattered 😊(Frozen Mist Wildcamping Ireland - you're a close second 😉) A great 32 minute trip to remember the amazing sights of Inishturk - I too love that feeling of knowing you have the place almost completely to yourself. The gifts of these solitary trips keep giving long after their ending. Loved the early shot of the birds landing on the sheep and the powerful sea raging below the beautiful cliffs. Your close ups of the bird life were spectacular and you'll have put Inishturk on the map for many! Lovely video 👏

Cheers Miriam, there is nothing else like that feeling of being the only one there - whether on an island or a mountain top - and I don't think there are too many places left where that can happen, unless you camp out for the night😊 The amount of birds along those cliffs was unreal and was a great bonus. Thank you again for introducing me to the island and inspiring me to visit 😊

Miriam has certainly given me a few ideas for sure, as of course you have , might be tempted to give Inishturk a visit this week, though the weather is to be quite changable next week, normally that dosent bother me at all, but I defo want to see those views. Great coverage of the island Gerry. ATVB Colin.
@gerrymcveigh
@gerrymcveigh 3 года назад
Cheers Colin, it is really tricky to get the weather right that far out west, even with high pressure over the rest of us the forecast still usually talks about mist and drizzle. I was lucky that the mist lifted a few times to give the views. A really small island though it does pack a lot in and all those seabirds made the trip so this is probably a great time of year to go😊

@@gerrymcveigh thought long and hard about this trip , there’s nothing I could add to a film that you haven’t already covered , or indeed Miriam , so I’ve decided to head for Innis Oirr, on Thursday , a little chilled wild camp near the Plassey , unlike the feasting in my latest upload , you might even see a pot noodle and ginger nuts 😁

Wow, well worth the wait, what an incredible and intimidating place, so wild and rugged! Loved the glass memorial plaques and the history of the tongs ♥️ man vs mist added some mystery to the island tour, this must have been amazing Gerry! Loved the history to the island too, and the Northwest side, made Kat call you a mountain goat, for sticking to that exposed side! 🐏♥️😬 Love your use of b-roll and how you toggle between shots and transitions too, the waves, wildlife and flora, beautiful. Those sea stacks too, so wild and rugged, again just other worldly 🌍👍 What a stunning place, you captured it brilliantly. Very GOT indeed. Good work on capturing the running water too, top tip! Total immersion, absolutely incredible and thank you for sharing your trip with us and all the effort of putting this great video together, really easy and enjoyable watch, stay safe and well, Ceri and Kat 🌊👍♥️☕🌊

It is a beautiful place, as are all these wild and rugged islands off the west coast of Ireland. The Tale of the Tongs had a real power as these islands are still loosing population to the mainland, the big cities and abroad as more young people emigrate. I could have done with a mountain goats legs and footing for some sections. Running water has been an issue as it hasn't rained here in around 4 weeks and streams are nearly dry - though we are due rain tomorrow🌧😊 Thank you for the cool feedback and as you both know there is a lot of effort in the filming and editing🎥🎬

Another great video Gerry, I was half expecting you not to use a tent! The wild Atlantic has given us some terrific cliffs and sea views but I loved all the bird wildlife there, quite a sanctuary. I'm with you on the wild flowers too, without the sheep the island would be a feast of colour. We went to the Skelligs a few years ago so have understanding for those who don't enjoy the boat trip! Thanks for sharing so much. Regards, Ashley

@gerrymcveigh 3 года назад
Patrick, it sounds like we both love Mayo. Achill is beautiful and so are those other smaller islands. Inishturk has a real remote feel because of the small population which is focused in the south of the island, leaving the rest of the island to the birds and sheep and occasional walker😊

Just stumbled across your videos about a week ago Gerry. Absolutely fantastic stuff. There’s nowhere in the world like Donegal and the west coast of Ireland (in my opinion obviously) and I feel so lucky to have it on my doorstep. Your videos really portray the locations beautifully and I am well impressed with your knowledge on the areas you visit. You’ve even made a pack of super noodles look good lol! Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next video.

Beautiful video. The shot with the birds landing on the sheep was class, almost as if you had choreographed it 🤔😅 I really enjoyed all your shots of the cliffs and the birds. It would be lovely to see the land be allowed to grow wild but the sheep are normally the only company on my hikes. I find myself talking to them 😅 All the best 👍
@gerrymcveigh
@gerrymcveigh 3 года назад
Cheers, I didn't even see the birds until I looked at the footage when editing, it was cool though😊 I have been known to have a conversation with sheep too as they are normally the only company when walking in the wilds of Ireland. The little bits of land without sheep were a riot of colour and it would have been amazing to see that right across the island. I would even be happy to pay to walk on the island if that allowed farmers to diversify.
@RamblingOn
@RamblingOn 3 года назад
@@gerrymcveigh it is easily one of the best shots I have seen. If you set out to film a clip like that it would be almost impossible. I would definitely pay to visit if it meant they could do that. I had never thought of if until you mentioned it. I'm just so used to grass 😅 I will be keeping a closer eye out for patches of wild flowers from now on.

That was jaw dropping Gerry. I'm just back from Achill island and was blown away by the place. I will definitely be back to explore Inishturk and Achillbeg, which I believe is uninhabited. Between yourself and Miriam kennedy, Inishturk is very well promoted. The footage you capture is stunning and I was wondering about what camera gear you use?. It looks like you travel light but you get results like you worked with David Attenborough. Beautiful video.
@gerrymcveigh
@gerrymcveigh 2 года назад
Cheers Joe, Achill is stunning and I definitely have plans to return. Inisturk was a great trip, even though I was lost in sea mist for a good part of it whilst the mainland basked in strong sunshine. Very quiet off the waymarked trail and loads of potential camping spots. Miriam certainly inspired me to visit👍 I think I travel light, fitting everything I need into a 45 litre rucksack. I have a GoPro hero 9 for the talking bits (only recently purchased having had a hero 4 for many years) and a Panasonic Lumix for all the other shots. I will keep an eye out for David Attenborough😊

Stephen, there are plenty of sheep. Not sure on the rights or wrongs of this one though did see some other walkers camped near the harbour and they had a dog. My route was a bit bespoke taking in a good bit of the Mountain Loop and following the western coast. I wouldn't follow my route exactly again as there were some precarious bits in the NW and crossed some rough ground in the SE. There is plenty of scope to explore using the Mountain Loop. @gerrymcveigh
@gerrymcveigh 2 года назад
Cheers Alan, my understanding would be that you can wild camp, especially on the west of the island which has no people/houses present. I just walked until I found a good spot and then set up camp, responsibly obviously, leaving no trace and being away early in the morning and setting up in the evening. There is a small camping area near to the harbour and there were a few people camping there, though I don't know if there is a charge or if it has to be prebooked
