Well Gerry, I eventually made it up to the summit of Raghtinmore last Sunday. Took my daughter with me and she did really well for a 12 year old. Didn't camp on this occasion but found one or two spots where @ill definitely return with a tent. The view was amazing while it lasted. Cloud rolled in and the mizzle started. Think I saw the exact spot where you camped as it looked like the only bivvy bag sized spot up there.
Chris, that sounds brilliant and great that you got those fantastic views, at least for a time👍 it is a brilliant place for a day on the hills or a wild camp, if you can find space between all those rocks😊 Hopefully you will get back again to spend the night👍
Konrad, I love that range of hills too. It was my first time starting at Crummies Bay (usually start at Lehan Bay) and it was a great walk and wild camp 😊
Hi, Gerry not sure how I missed this one but glad I had a look over the MV August Newsletter. A fantastic video as always, loved all the panoramic views over the mountains, especially the ones at first and last light. Beautiful part of the country is the Inishowen Peninsula. I like the inclusion of the flora, makes your wonder how some survive, it really adds to the compilation of the video. Beautiful work.
Cheers Aiden, it was a while since i had been there so was good to go back and from a different starting point than before. it feels like a wee mountain range all own its own and has fantastic panoramas across Donegal :-)
You were blessed with fabulous conditions on this one Gerry. You captured it all perfectly the macro and the micro. As always a real pleasure to see you out. I'll call this the 'great cotton grass ramble.' All the best. Mark
What a fantastic area Gerry! Your style of filming perfectly captures the peace and solemnity of the area. Great weather mate, you must have been so chilled out on top of that fell. We are considering doing part of the wild Atlantic way this summer, weather and other things permitting, can you recommend good areas to pull up for wild camping in a camper, also where are the mountains mainly? Thanks again buddy for another classic :) Tim and Mandy
Cheers Tim & Mandy. The whole west coast of Ireland from top to bottom is pretty cool but Donegal in the NW is special - Port is well worth a visit and would be suitable for an overnight in the camper and Slieve League boasts the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Mayo and Achill Island are amazing and so is the Dingle Peninsula and Kerry. i think there would be ample opportunity to just explore and discover a spot to stop in the wilds to spend a night - as you already do! There are some good guidebooks including 'Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way - A Walking Guide' by Helen Fairbairn. Enjoy if you get the opportunity
Thanks buddy its not a certainty yet that we are going but your vids over the years have always inspired us to one day explore the west coast, hopefully this year, `I have some health tests at the moment :) Tim and Mandy
Hi Gerry. You’ve inspired me to want to do that walk. I only live in Derry and I’ve thought about it so many times. I even have all the equipment for it but never done it because I was always concerned that wildcampers would get hassle from local land owners. But now I’m gonna do it. Could you list the equipment in your sleep system? I like the look of the Bivvy Bag and mattress but don’t know what make they are or where to get them?
Chris, cool that you live so close to those mountains and are going to spend a night out in them :-) My bivy bag is an old army one that I was given free, only use when i know it isn't going to be that wet. I use a Thermarest sleep mat which is really comfy and a good insulator and packs down well. Sleeping bag is Mountain Equipment down bag rated to -5 which packs pretty small. I have a Mountain Warehouse inflatable pillow (which has a slow puncture :-) I have camping up there a few times and there is no bother at height, following the code of camping late and leaving early. Enjoy :-)
Hi Gerry. I'm planning a trip up Raghtinmore next week of the weather is good. I was wondering if there would be decent ground for a 1 man tent up there where you laid out your bivvy?
Chris, plenty of space around the summit area. Its just getting that right bit of ground, I know with me there is always the temptation to keep looking. I am sure you will be grand. Enjoy :-)
