Wild camping in the Hilleberg Soulo tent & cooking with a trangia stove 

I've cooked all over with Trangia for most of 40 years. Yes, a lot has come and gone but I recall -36 in the Antarctic the Trangia was the go to cooker, nothing stuffed up, blocked or failed. Yes the wind shield and your fine. Never have I enjoyed videos as Your Spot Paul Messner, rite at home mate. thankyou. Jim Outback of Australia.

When i was in the army in northern Sweden we had no problem using the trangia alcohol stove in temps around -35 Celsius. We had the stove in our pocket close to the body and when lighting it we used several matches and let them burn up in the stove one by one.

my first Trangia was bought for me as an 18th birthday present - I'm 55 this year and still use it ! The only part I've had to buy is a new rubber seal for the burner. I do have other stoves but go back to my Trangias regularly as they are just brilliant. Nice video - thank you.

Nice to see the Trangia used and with a smaller arrangement. Makes it lighter and smaller for backpacking.

I first used a Trangia as an 18 yo naval recruit on a survival course in the Brecon Beacons in the 70s. Thought they were a bit meh and old school. After over 40 years of camping and using just about everything (except a Jetboil) I've now gone full circle and use my Trangia gear more than anything else. I've really come to appreciate how good Trangia products are and the 27 cook set is now my go to system. When I think of all the money I've spent over the years on gear that's now either in the bin or sold, when really all I should have bought as an 18 year old was a Trangia 27 . . . . and I'm very confident that if I had, I would have saved myself hundreds of pounds and it'd still be going strong now. Ho hum, we live and learn.

If you're still using the trangia meths burner, invest in the winter kit for it. It's an attachment that fits underneath the burner with a piece of gauze on it, put a few drops of meths on it and set light to it, it pre-warms your meths and burner making it much easier to light and quicker to bloom.

Thanks to you mate and your videos I’ve been watching during all the lockdowns , i have decided to give wild camping a go. It’s looks so stress relieving and relaxed. I’ve got the basics etc

Except for the wind you guys are damn lucky, in the States if I went to bed with steak and a Snickers bar in my tent I ‘d wake up as Bear Burrito.

I can understand not liking campfires where you are, but I can't imagine so much camping with so few campfires. I'm glad I live where there are so many good opportunities for them, either existing authorized fire pits, or an easy way to do it without leaving a noticeable trace, and without violating rules.

I ditched the old Trangia burner many years ago, now I only use the Trangia Gas Burner with the Trangia Stove 27-21 UL-D, I only use the largest pan and the 0.6L kettle, the perfect set for me in my 40+ years of outdoor living, it is so compact you can have every thing packed inside plus some extras ! Best ever Stove !!! It have never let me down, it cannot tilt, very difficult to break anything.

Done Haystacks among many other peaks over the years, I've done Helvellyn 3 times and Scafel Pike, Pavy Arc, Blencathra off sharp edge, Great and Green Gable, Sheffield Dodd and Pike some other walks like Ingram valley, high force, cheviots, Kielder. and a couple of Munroe's in Scotland.

I love watching your vids as you try lots of different combinations of kit. I personally use a Triangia but i use the complete set, cant remember if its the 25 or 27 but its for one person. Kettle fits inside bowls and stove fits inside kettle.I will swap out my frying pan for this non stick version you are using and that foldable cup looks bang on. Fair play for cooking lying down, my old bones protest at that!!

Great show Paul. I'm feeling homesick. Over here ( Niagara Falls)the breakfast of champions is left over pizza. I think you got it right with bacon, mushrooms steak and asparagus. Maybe some black pudding (called blood pudding here) would have elevated to the next level May I suggest a hip flask of your favorite scotch instead of the beers. Less weight, The good news is Moroccan Woodbines are now legal in Canadian provincial park campsites. Not to be wasted as wicks for Trangia stoves ( destined for the Camping Hall of Fame) Keep up the good work. Need more Big Girl references.... no offence girls.

I have the same collapsible cup. I use it as a bowl for rice etc. Now I want the Trangia triangle for the Biolite 2 to give my cast iron pans some room above the flame, as well as more stability for larger pots.

I plan to do some cycle touring in Europe at the end of the summer season and had my eye on the Hilleburg Nammatj 2GT..Just started to enjoy watching your vids Paul..Keep them coming!

If you buy the Trangia pan stand you can use it with the Trangia triangle stove. It lets you put smaller cups etc on top and works with the storm cooker as well. I have one and use it extensively. I never thought to get a soldering mat to use to insulate the cooker. I'm of to see if I can get one now. brilliant idea.

Another good video Paul. Camping in bear country, we tend to cook well away from our tent so as not to smell like a food source. Not a concern in sheep country... 🤣

I’d probably just keep it simple with boil in a bag food but this could be a nice treat now and again. My question is like to have seen is how you clean/pack the oily pan back up in your bag? Paul I am going to tell you that you should sit your trangia ring on the top of your trangia triangle as it can be done and the meth burner underneath in your cooker and you can put a small cup/pot safely on top of your triangle cooker plz do try it out for safety inside your Hilleberg tent vestibule 😉👍

Love the old trangia. With now being in Canada, I keep a biolite stove in the car as my emergency backup- I never have to buy fuel for it, and cooked a meal for 4 with a 3’ x 1” stick I found next to the picnic table, damn that bacon was good. Ok its slower than an msr, but I never run of gas. By the way one of Ray Mears Rockies vids was filmed just down the road from me. Just on the ghost river.

I camped on Fleetwith Pike and did the walk down Haystacks to Bittermere a couple of months ago. I never get bored of that area.

Totally agree with the tea lights or any candle as they're paraffin which is super carcinogenic but a co² detector isn't expensive and I have one for my hot tent/log burner set up

Nice vid again Paul, I'm playing RU-vid catch up lol. I've never been to that tarn but I've now been convinced to visit. Triangle is an epic stove, it works wonders. A little tip for hot handles, use some 6mm rubber tube, very heat resistant. I've got a bit spare you can have. Speak soon mate, Atb.

For heat in the tent, I've got hand warmers & hot water bottle. A good ruby murray for internal warmth. As a rotund lad I keep warm for a while, plus being a lad from Yorks/Lancs boarder I don't feel the cold as much as many.

I like that tip of rolling a wick for the stove. If an ordinary match won't light the Trangia burner, I use so-called windproof matches (they have a whole load of extra phosphorus, so they tend to flare for about fifteen seconds, and I always used to carry about half a dozen with me). On one occasion at a campsite, one of my mates had brought a primus stove. But we couldn't get the meths in the priming pan to light because it was too cold. I happened to have with me some alcohol jelly (does anyone else remember the Centreforge mini cook set?), and we added a blob of that to the priming pan. It lit OK, and, over the course of the next five minutes, the meths in the priming pan gradually started burning. It even burned long enough to get the mantle hot enough to vaporise the paraffin when he started pumping. And once a primus is going, it's a fantastic stove. I wouldn't ever want to backpack with one, though. Or use it inside the tent. If ever I'm cooking in the vestibule, I always leave the flysheet flap open unless there's actual rain or snow coming down.

My idea is to use my trangia stove, thanks for the tip on lighting in cold weather. Great camp mate, made me hungry though.. ;)

Stunning Scenery Mate

An additional tip for you is to put a teaspoon of water into the meths. This will prevent your cooking pot from going black with carbon smoke. The hydro carbon smoke leaves a yellow tinge on the cooking pot which will be easier to clean off than the carbon deposits.

Awesome cook stove

Try using wooden(bamboo) chopsticks for your cooking - moving, flipping, stirring, scramble eggs, picking individual items, even use to eat with, etc. Nothing wrong with Keeping the disposal chopsticks. Just stick it in the dishwasher.

That looked an amazing trip out. I'm struggling to find one of those Trangia triangles to buy. Out of stock everywhere in UK.

I carry a " u " made of bent clothesline wire on top of the Trangia Triangle to hold my mug If you use a small triangle file to make small grooves in the top of the stove the pegs or the U shaped mug holder will remain stable When you're done with the frying pan add water to the warm pan to ease cleanup

It's much easier to light the alcohol burner if you keep it in ( in a bag ) your pocket for warmth.... and then light a twig and use that to ignite the burner

Beautiful location for a quick overnighter. Must be nice to not have to worry about bears, wolves or cougars. Of course, you have to be careful not to get too close to the Grimpen Mire!
