In today's episode of Tour du Mont Blanc we hiked from Plan de Veny to Courmayer, Rifugio G. Bertone in Italy.
The morning of that day was very cloudy and chilly with lots of humidity and wetness in the air. It was one of the first cloudy mornings on the trail. We woke up quite early at 6 am and were just chilling out in the tent for a while. We were so grateful for the privileged location that we camped in yesterday evening. The views from the site were incredible with the massive rocks and waterfalls coming down from them right in front of us. We knew that in front of us there is another mountain to climb and we didn't want to do that today because we were doing one mountain every day the last several days and got a bit tired. So we had a plan to get to the village Courmayer and then to look around in search for the camping spot...

We are a couple who once fell in love with mountains and couldn't get back. So we decided to follow our heart and move from a big city to a small village to be able to do what we love and to create this content. Our goal is to promote the healthy lifestyle, to motivate people to travel more and care for nature around. We are passionate walkers who love hiking, trekking and camping. We offer the detailed information of our hikes and routes, including the map and all the directions, so that you can repeat it if you'd like to.
We choose walking over driving and other types of transportation whenever we can because we learnt that this way we see so much more and can explore and feel the place better. Walking is an excellent activity that has so many benefits to your health and requires no special equipment or practice, so we encourage you to get the most out of it and get out walking.
We speak English, Spanish, French and Russian, so don't hesitate to address to us in your native language.

What is your opinion about wild camping ban? Do you think it's normal or unfair to the hikers?
@SteZic
@SteZic 3 года назад
Sadly, here in Italy it is not allowed anywhere to camp for recreational purpose (except the camping sites, of course). It is just allowed from dusk to dawn for emergency, this is probably why guy in the refugee told you that it is allowed only at a certain altitude, where weather and temperature could change fast and potentially become a threat to life. You're clearly nice persons who care about nature and "special" and fragile habitats, but sadly it is not always like this and the laws took a safe/conservative direction rather than a more liberal one because so many people complained of what they found in their house's sorroundings in the years. They just prefer to not encourage that kind of tourism, I guess. Many hikers complain about this, but it is somehow allowed to camp if you are not close to private grounds or national protected parks until you don't start a campfire and take down the tent at dawn. It is not written anywhere, but it is like this, this is the reason why hikers ask for an updated and more precise regulation.

@@SteZic I plan on going to backpack through Italy from September - May. Any tips on how to get by on a hundred $ a week without being able to camp in the wild?

I think they should allow camping everywhere. To me, it just feels like greed and unwelcoming.

Everyone knows that it's almost to impossible to book a bed in a refuge in a high season. What if there is no available bed in the refuge? If you think about it, according to the Italian laws the number of people that are allowed to hike a trail equals to the number of available beds in the refuges on the trail, which is ridiculous. Take, for example, Alta Via 1 or Alta Via 2. The trails are very long, it takes a couple of days to complete it. What if there is no available place somewhere in the middle of the trail? Does it mean that I am not allowed to go? This is ridiculous. The trails are for everyone, not just for people who paid for the refuge. Why not let people stay in the tent, then? Not everywhere, of course, because the nature is of an utmost importance for me, but why not over the tree line? You know what I mean.

With full respect I wild camp. Pitch late. Out of sight. Get up early and move on. I refuse to use noisy expensive Refugio's except for a midday coffee. Wild camping is illegal in England but we all wild camp!!!....So I will wild camp whatever country Im in but am very careful how I manage it.

Really charming couple! I started the TMB in Courmayeur, and wild-camped all the way. Got as far as Elena the 1st day and camped on their lawn as it wasn't yet open (June 2nd 2018). The 'rangers' won't search off the beaten track anyway so not an issue. Looking forward to watching all of your trip!

Thanks a lot, Mike! Great to meet the like-minded person who likes to wild camp as much as we do. Hopefully it is true about the rangers. Hope you will enjoy the rest of the series too!:)

In Italy, wild camping regulations are very confused and vary from region to region. In the Aosta Valley it is allowed to wild camp above 2500m, which is half of the region. In Piedmont, just next door, wild camping is allowed from dusk to dawn. Depending on places wild camping is often forbidden but tollerated, which makes it hard to decide when and where to do it. I understand that the refuge owner is not allowing people to camp around his hut, because many people would just use the facilities (bathrooms, showers) without paying any fee (you could argue that you might buy a coffee or something), I see it as like going to a camping with facilities and expecting not to pay. Personally, I do not see the point of camping close to a refuge, I would pick a spot that is more secluded. There is, in Italy, definitely a lack of quiet camping options.

@WalkingNatureWorld 4 года назад
Hi, Lorenzo, thanks for the comment. Yes, we felt like it was quite confusing in Italy. Thank for the clarification about the regions. We were actually sticking to the rule setting up a tent from dusk to dawn and it seemed to work ok. But of course we had a hard time sometimes to find secluded spots. We were actually ready to pay some fee for camping at the side of the refugee which would be a solution for these kind of days when you feel the most exhausted and don´t have the powers to search for stealth spot. We do prefer to camp in the wild too always whenever it is available. This is one of the joys of hiking trips for us:)

@@WalkingNatureWorld , with the reopening of mountain refuges, in the phase 2 of Corona, the Italian Alpine Club is trying to promote and lobby to allow tents around refuges, since they would be much safer than the dormitories. Hopefully this will have a long term effect and better acceptance of tent bivouacs in the mountains.
@fahdzaa
@fahdzaa 4 года назад
@@lorenzobertolotto1255 That would be sweet for sure. Even make it with some little fee it would be oke. I understand that not everyone would be happy with it maybe because the hard part is, you can't control everyone on if they keep everything clean etc. which is kinda sad. Peoplr need to respect the nature and owners around those places. Hopefully it will be better, im planning to do the Tmb soon and want to camp also.

Thanks for you videos, they have some of the best images i saw from the TMB. The wild camping limitations, we have the same in Portugal, we can only camp with permition of the owners, probably they put the limitation, because not everybody do like you, and take the trash out, we just have to respect the locals. Hope I can do the TMB someday.

Thank you for leaving such a kind feedback. We are happy to know that you enjoy our videos:) Hopefully it will inspire you to do the TMB, one of the greatest hikes we've done so far. That is true, in Europe mostly it's like that but if you are careful enough it may not be a problem. By the way we are thinking about travelling to Portugal and doing some hiking there, maybe you can recommend us some trails to do? The best ones or your favorite ones? This will be our first time in the country and all we thought was doing a Camino Portuguese and still we are hesitating which way to take. So if you have any suggestions we would be grateful to hear from you.

Most of the trails in Portugal are day hikes, if you look for nature, try Gerês, its one of the most beautiful places in Portugal, near Serra da Estrela, you can also do some mountain hikes, the best hikes i loved to do was in Madeira Island look for "levadas". If you search on wikiloc there are some trains in Madeira for more than one day with wild camping, i would love to see that trail. Unfortunately the Caminho de Portuguese doesn't pass near where i live.

Some countries simply have different rules to other countries when it comes to wild camping. Pitch your tent in a secluded place as close to sunset as you can and get up and break camp early to avoid detection. A green tent is also not a bad idea. But I agree, a refuge could offer the option at a slightly reduced cost if they have the space. Instead of them making some money from you, they made none.
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 4 года назад
You are right, we have been following this rule always and normally it was fine. Most of our indignation was caused by the fact that they´re simply not giving people like us a choice to stay in the tent if we want. Everybody has a right to choose in our opinion. Also we feel like the people like us are suffering because of the majority who are not educated or aware enough. And it´s really sad. Everything should start with an education and then the prohibitions won´t be that necessary.

It's amazing that I find from your video today I guess I had met you guys at Ufficio del Turismo di Courmayeur (the bus centre) that day! Since you looked so energetic, I shot you guys a picture with my cell phone. Last year I had stayed in Courmayeur for tow weeks and then went to Chamonix to meet with my daughter for our TMB. If you want, I'd like to send the photo to you. It looks good.

Can you recommend some good places to wild camp in the Italian section?
@WalkingNatureWorld
@WalkingNatureWorld 3 года назад
Well, we wild camped there only twice we believe and can't give you the exact locations, the other two nights we spent in the campground. We just always search for a secluded spot away from the trails(so you won't be seen) and better to be above the trail.

I camped at beautiful col Sapin. It is a bit under 2500. There are legal elevations on the Saxo high route. Tête de la Tronche is 2584m. But it is very exposed, only in good weather.
