Decathlon is massively under rated gear, I’ve done 1500 miles in my boots and still handling up fantastically mainly summer use like you I use full leather boot Alt bergs in my case for winter
Yeah I’m still using these, perfect for warmer weather. The waterproofing has since gone though as expected. But I’ve got the leather ones for harsh days
Was quite surprised at your initial comments about the canvas boot. In my experience even expensive canvas boots aren't waterproof despite manufacturers claims 😏 Leather Zamberlans or Miendls with a tin of grangers wax to keep them waterproof and subtle, and they can last a good 5000km 😉 Lightweight canvas are great for summer hikes on good paths 🙂 The drone footage over the rivers wiz fierce mighty 👏🏻
Thanks Craig. 🙂 I was pleasantly surprised that these turned out to actually be waterproof. Wore them again on the 11hour, 17mile overnight hike and again no issues. I don’t expect it to last though. But definitely good value. Little insight: The drone footage over the river was actually shot the next day after we had hiked back to the car. I dumped my kit in the car and walked back up to get the river shots.

I've been to Decathlon a few times with the intention of purchasing a "cheaper" hiking boot, but in the end I always decide against it and purchase a much more expensive type of boot e.g. Salomon. I grumble at the price when buying, but know I've made the right choice. Thanks for the video, justifies my decision to spend more £.
@@StephenJReid Had a pair of (I'm fairly certain) fake Karrimor boots years ago.. Bought when I was niave about hiking boots. Let's just say after an overnight Mourne walk (30+miles) my feet were aching. Never again.. Spend that little bit more and you'll be fine. No more sore feet on subsequent Mourne walks. I even bought two pairs of boots that were the same style as I liked them so much 😂.
They only stayed waterproof for a few hikes but I kept them and wore them loads as lightweight boots for dry days. Best value for money footwear I’ve bought. Just don’t expect them to stay waterproof for long
Stephen you're such a loveable balloon! I had a pair of Lowa Combat GTX boots (Paid £225) and they lasted me 14 years! Got myself another pair for the winter, use Lowa Renegade for the summer months though they're not as grippy as the likes of Salomon but last much longer.
“A loveable balloon?!” 😂😂 That’s going on my Resume. Wow those look like solid beasts of boots. I’m not a fan of the higher boots, like my ankle flexibility. Although it might stop me getting so many sprains!
Beautiful scenery. Your greens are as rich as our reds in the Australian outback. These look like reasonable boots, and waterproofing is less of an issue for me in my environment. What I don’t like the look of is how the boot folds so easily onto the rear of the big toe when you walk, especially up an incline. Having broken said big toe, that’s a huge issue for me, and why I tend to pay more for Meindl, Hanwag and the like. They’re very durable and great protection.
Hi Stephen, Delivered with your usual manic jokey enthusiasm and zany exhuberance. You are a natural in front of the camera. This smooth running film belies the fact you obviously took a lot of time and thought over camera angles, shots, editing etc This is definitely not run of the mill stuff. Where did you ever find two other eejits mad enough to go along with your hike today? Just how long were those 2 boyos thinking of staying up the Mournes? Those packs looked like they were straight out of an SAS training manual! I almost expected one of them to pull out a blow up jacuzzi at the camp site. Well that turned into a really ugly day. Yes '' Look at the views'. Wow that must have been a real unexpected joy to have the ponies suddenly gallop through the plantation. What a capture! What a never to be repeated moment! I loved the wishful thinking, 'peace between man and pony,' remark. That really ended well! lol ......And......You even had a challenge and a review cleverly tucked in there too! I watched from beginning to end. In fact I called in my discerning wife to watch as well! You deserve to be picked up by tv. Best wishes. You cheered me up as I recover from my recent hip relacement operation. ( 2 hours sleep last night....Ahhhhhh....poor wee me! lol )
Haha, thanks Tom 🙂 For this kind of video the filming is quite reactive, I'll just shoot stuff as it happens. Then in the edit I'll try and piece things together to tell more of a story. So for example there's actually a couple of sequences in this that looks like everything happened all at the same time but was actually shot hours apart. In two cases on different days!
That kit all all just for one night, Rob is ex Navy and a survival instructor so a bit more pro than me!! Actually found him on LinkedIn 😂 The ponies were an unexpected treat, well until they tried to eat me that is. Thanks Tom and recover well!🙂

Thanks very much! 🙂 I try to break down the video into individual chapters that can have their own unique approach to the edit. I enjoying trying different things when I’m editing. I get bored otherwise.
If you’d been in Scotland .... near a body of water, I could have made reference to Kelpies (Murder Ponies) .... oh look, I did it anyway. Love how you went from talking about diarrhoea to thunderous farting brass music 😂
Oh right, get you now. I sometimes add in distance titles in videos. But half the time I’m cutting it so fine with getting uploaded in time that I just leave it off. More work than it seems and often involves going back and trying to match up footage with maps etc.
Hey Stephen another great video mate :) I'm curious on what editing software you use for you videos? I'm getting into making videos and would love to achieve the top notch quality that you are always pumping out! Although it will take me year's to get anywhere close to your level XD
Hi Rhys thanks 🙂 I use Adobe Premiere pro. Although you could get similar results from Davinci Resolve (free) or Final Cut ProX or other editing software. Learning how to use the software is just part of it. The bulk of the learning is practising enough and trying to improve every time. I’ve probably been editing video for over 10years now. Although I’ve seen people become pretty good after a few months.
