sorry this went up so late. This was way harder to record than I thought. and also quick question...did anyone get the streaming version of "drawing monsters" by Mignola. If so DM me on IG or facebook. I want to buy it but the kickstarter is over and I can't check it out!!
This was the comic that cemented the name Richard Friend in my memory banks. While gawking at the artwork in the comic, I started to imagine Richard Friend, in a dark untidy room, hunched over his work table with blood shot eyes and unshaven beard, countless Rapidograph pens strewn all over his work area, cursing under his breath " So many precisely drawn tiny lines! So many precisely drawn tiny lines!!!". Decades later, I found his RU-vid channel and turned out he was the opposite of what I had imagined. The man is so friendly and he happily shares his knowledge, experiences and time. Thanks sir and can't wait for Blasterkid!
One of the most beautiful illustrations from my childhood. Travis Charleston inspired me so much. One of the artists that move the furniture in your mind. His work was so elegant and perfect. So much care. It was inspiring. ❤❤
Rich.. nice talk about, yeah,I liked wizard too, I got it for their monthly price guide, also, any fan that has panel layout questions, have them look at this book.. bye'eeee..
I love this WildCats phase, your work is fantastic, Richard, I love watching your shows. I have that VooDoo statue that came out in the 90s, it was a very low print run, only 500 units, and the drawing is this image that you put in the opening of your video, only VooDoo, the sculpture is by Tim Bruckner, a very talented artist, I always look at his work with affection, in my opinion one of the best sculptors. If you want I can send you pictures of my statue. Thank you for the excellent work you do, Richard, it is a great pleasure to be able to watch your shows.
I have been posting a little slower so although they are long...they are really good material to check out! I have been enjoying your livestreams and the band is super cool!!
That's the way to start the morning! I was literally going through these this weekend and bam. Uncle Rich delivers the commentary! Those random wash/painted panels always intrigued me so much. And the confirmation of what we all knew, 'Ol T-Bone Charest has the biggest clock in comics. 😂
That one I dont think ever came home! The one in my home office is still sitting there. It's a bigger set. I seriously need to get it out! I haven't turned it on in.maybe 5 or 6 years!
Ah yes. Thank you Rich. Travis the legend. I think I figured out why Travis sticks out to me. He has the same clean draftsmanship aesthetic as Bolland. Not only can they draw supremely well, Their work just looks shiny and slick. Along with the attention to detail....you get something sexy and special.
Thanks for sharing some of the behind the scenes stuff. Somehow I relate even if I never finished a book. Mid to late 90s inspired me and my friends. We had our version of Cyberforce/wildcats or X-Men, we wanted to integrate or use 3d models to speed up the process. Well we never got to process fully figured out. Prisma color pencils, markers, Photoshop and 3ds max. We had loads of fun in the late 90s. I always had a Travis book nearby, great inspiration.
wowowowowwowowowowwowowo gonna see this later tonight while sketching! Thank you Richard! I particularly love these issues! I think you and Travis really created some kind of magic here!
Clip Studio Paint has a ruler option where you can put the pressure you want to either a straight line or a circle or something. Highly intuitive for digital pencil pressure also this program supports thus exporting photoshop brushes. Great video, man, thank you.
It'd be interesting to hear your opinion on AI art. I'm in art school and a lot of people here are scared of it destroying our industry and the value of art
Jeez, love when you do Travis, your videos are a gem on youtube. Any genre/medium of artist can learn from these videos! My first time seeing your inks I was pretty new into comics and was learning art thro comics. It was a batman book With you and David Finch like probably a decade ago and it blew my mind! Anyway, thanks for the video & was wondering if you could look at Trade Moore's work mostly from "The Legacy Of Luther Strode" or/and Silver surfer. His work is Wonderful & Trippy, thanks again 🙏🎉🔥
Does Travis have a photographic memory? You said he draws mostly from his head and seldom if ever used reference. I always thought he was using photo reference fir a lot of his faces, vehicles, weapons, etc. If he was just drawing from his head, my appreciation for him was always pretty high but it just skyrocketed
With that upside down shot of Grifter…so much good stuff, but I was wondering if “Leon: The Professional” was released in the movies around then. So many of Travis’ layouts felt like a Bond movie. I hope at some point he does an interview or something where just talks about the impetus for for these layouts and what kinds of movies/tv/photography he may have been looking at around this time.
Does anyone have any information besides that bleeding cool article that says what Travis is working on for Mark Miller that should be coming out soon What's the title of the book what's it about and when is it coming out ?
These scans(?) look better than the actual printed comics, they didn't do you guys any favors in the production department, then again printing those fine lines in such a small format on paper with a bit of texture... there wasn't much they could have done.
@@RichardFriendartist Yeah I was quite surprised, my comics disintegrated since I read them so much, I bought issues #0 to #6 in 2001, tried to look for digital versions online some time ago, there were none other than some awful scans, these look like master files before they sent them to the printers.
@@farben_ I agree. the first time I saw this version was today. I was shocked and I was almost going to call DC and thank them. They look unbelievably awesome!!
@@RichardFriendartist We have a great online edition of Battle Chasers on Image Comics site and now Wildcats, maybe some day we'll have Danger Girl too.
I replied to you on my phone for this one...it must not have gone through. But like I said. He had water color pencils...so he'd laid down the pencil and then hit it with water and it became a moveable medium for him...and he'd just lay glazes of colors that way. Very slow process because it's really got to be dry before you make a second pass.
What ever happened to Travis Charest? I remember being excited by his stuff right before going off to college and taking a hiatus from comics. Only part way into the video as I’m writing - so maybe you’ll tell us.
He burned himself working on the Metabarons book, then he drew I think 4 pages for a Ultimates book with Iron Man, a webcomic called Spacegirl, then only did some covers similar in style to Drew Struzan, recently he changed styles and he's almost unrecognizable.
@@farben_ People are surprised that Travis Charest has changed his style and they forget that in a period of 10 years (maybe more) he changed his style three times: Jim Lee clone, Wildcats style and Metabaron. Some of his latest Catwoman/Batman covers are really good, and it's a shame we don't see more of his personal work.
@@m_a5944 It's a significant departure from his previous style(s), some people may not even realize Travis Charest is still working because they didn't recognize it, if I didn't see his signature on some of his more recent works I would never guess it was him, I even had to do a double take like on those Marvel box head covers.
I loved these when they came up, but it was frustrating when by issue 3 or 4 it was obvious you two couldn’t finish on time and the rest of the story was drawn by somebody else. You deserved European timelines: it’s finish when the artist knows he finished it. Also, considering how Charest started as a Jim Lee clone - a pretty good one, but a clone- when he evolved to this level of artistry I sort of became bored with Jim Lee’s art. Not to imply Lee is not a great artist but his style became stagnant - around this time Hush happened and, sorry Jim, but it was boring same faceness kinda stuff. I mean, Travis cast Brad Pitt as Grifter - how f-king cool is that?
Seriously, Mr Friend- I think you should contact Travis, promise him no one will bring up being late on past projects, and ask him to do a stream with you and Finch and Erick and ask him to share some techniques he used on WildC.A.T.S. volume 2. From his previous interviews it really seemed like his moving to Paris was seen by him as a chance to reinvent himself and shed the "past deadline guy" tag. Even though it didn't result in such, It seems to weigh on him a bit- although of course I don't speak for him or anyone else- and I have no idea what your relationships with each other are like between you all. I believe the result of your having him on could not only boost positivity, but also we artists could all learn something new and your channel will also benefit. Just to see my favorite artists together would really be a kickass blessing. I'm really just being selfish, because I want to learn and be entertained by you guys, but I am also really fraggin' inspired af by you all. Joining Patreon soon. Really enjoy watching and you've taught me a lot. From fixing and maintaining Microns and using a crow quill for the first time to using shape, form, and finishing pieces. Thank you so much for being Rich! 🦾
