This is the way we preserve these fish and there will always be negative people who have nothing really invested in trying to get the fish here and breed and preserve them and don't know what they are talking about
Cory, regarding the ethics of collecting wild fish. You should invite Anton Lamboj (published cichlid expert from Austria) on for a podcast or fly him in. We need to collect as many species samples ASAP in areas like Peru. Anton has a time lapse of what has happened to Ghana. In less than 10 years, almost every prime collection point has been utterly destroyed by mining. Many of the small creeks are now gone or are now surrounded by sand instead of a forest. It is absolutely vital we collect as many of these species as possible to preserve them in the hobby. Otherwise, we will probably lose them forever.
The Spix macaw has gone instinct in the wild. It's not extinct completly thanks to passionate people, like you, that kept and bred that bird they loved. More than ever we need people like that, that will salvage anything they can from the global slaughter. This is what you are meant to do ! So just keep doing it ! ;)
Dean and Cory are an excellent example for the future of our hobby. I want to be just like Dean. Accidents while shippings fish is to be expected but are always a terrible outcome.
Yall do it right.. It takes time, money and understanding. 35 years ago they used local paralysis roots and stems to bulk collect. MANY garbage collectors still do. Your efforts and Knowledge adds to the passion of the hobby. I don't own tanks I have aquariums. Keep up the great work.
Love seeing vids of Dean's fish room. You will never see a dirty tank in his fish room and that says a lot. Plus you can really see he cares about the fish to.

Thank you for sharing this incredibly insightful video. I think we can all agree that it sucks to lose fish, so I imagine it sucks even more when you have hundreds of thousands of eyes on you when it happens.
Those brazilian nut husks are also used in flame powered power plants in Riberalta Bolivia. They have HUGE mountains of them that they pile up during the collection season. They burn them all year long.
The discussion in this video about the problems with the shipping of the wild caught tropical fish is unpleasant to listen to, but its important that as many in the hobby hear this as possible. I think that's proved, by the view count here. Thanks for sharing this video, and for leaving it up.
just saw this vid, those knife fish are native fish from Suriname from what i see, Gymnotus carapo(not sure),HOPOPOMUS ARTEDI,the third one i dont know :/, hope it helps XD, they get quite huge 40cm-70 cm or so.
If we as hobbyists/ breeders can increase the availability of rare/hard to get fish then we can reduce the illegal taking of them as risks outweigh the gains which will help sustain wild species

AdeptLen And let them go extinct as soon as their homes will also be polluted by the mining companies? Nah Better have 100 fish die during shipping and use the surviving ones for breeding than not shipping them and have them go extinct.
AdeptLen Sadly I also hope that these companies will be stopped, but getting these animals out of the wild and breeding them won’t be too bad. Just in case that the habitate of these fish will get destroyed out of pure capitalist greed, the fish will at least survive and maybe, if the waters will get habitable again in the future, the hobby-bred fish might be used to repopulate these waters with their original inhabitants. Just as you said: we can do more than one thing at the same time. We can try to stop companies from destroying nature and save these fish as a backup-plan.

I hunt and fish as well as am a fish keeper. The big point is moderation. As a hunter I always get thrown down oh you kill animals. However there is so much more to it then that. Moderation and conservation. I loved listening to this!

Ever try nylon plumbers tape instead of a rubber band for getting a tighter fit on the sponge filter intake, its made for potable water and will last a lot longer than a rubber band.
Cory, years ago when I kept fish, to get a sponge to fit more snugly on a filter tube, I put a line of silicon on the tube and it worked great. I tried silicon washers, but they sometimes slipped up the tube when I tried pushing the sponge on. I let the silicon cure for a couple of days and it stayed in place.
I believe the kinda zebra striped knife fish is a zebra carapo knife fish and the get about 11 inches. I've got them in before at the pet store I work at. the other ones I don't know.
So very enjoyable to watch and learn. Dean, I love your fish room. Everything looks to be thriving. I was in aww of your Praecox tank. But then I love many of your tanks. :)

But I guess they spit. Similar to archer fish. Jimmy wouldn’t by chance have any b-roll of this, would he?
