I like this song, it has rhythm and beat. White boys play black music well. Nice to see you again Joy Jean 😊

Empress, this was from the early 70's. Nobody was so easily offended.

Yo gal! I'm a white boy, and I play bass guitar. Let me tell you, it is a compliment when you play funk and people say play that funky music 'white boy' :)

This was the seventies... the disco era... there wasn't a lot of white bands that played Funk. KC and the sunshine band had a couple of white guys... sly and the family stone had a couple...Even grand Funk railroad was really just a rock band... but wild cherry was an all white rock band, who changed to Funk. It's not offensive lol. ❤ Great reaction. Thank you.

Thank you @chrissiegle1065, I thought that phrase was offensive until I read the backstory. It’s actually cool lol

Wild Cherry was a hard rock band. They had a regular gig at the 2001 Club, and with disco big at the time, their sound didn't go over well. After one show, a black audience member shouted, "Play some funky music, white boy." Parissi decided they should, and wrote down the phrase on a bar order pad. They recorded it in Cleveland with a disco sound: drum and bass mixed way up front. The band was concerned about the lyrics, but Parissi insisted on keeping them.

Interesting! It’s good they turned that phrase into an actual song 😅

Believe it or not My Empress...this is the studio version. There is a fantastic Live version of the song. Performed on The Midnight Special program in front of a studio audience. It is light years ahead of this mix (I am no fan either). I think you will prefer the Live version. Back in 1978 no one cared about the "White Boy' phrase. Black artists were the heart behind Soul, Funk, R&B, Jazz and Disco. Was it a stereotypical swipe? Yeah, I suppose it was. It was also true. As a hopelessly Caucasian individual, please allow me to speak for those white folks of the Sixties and Seventies generations. We saw the humor in it and had a good laugh. That was it. Whenever our band in the late 1970's needed a full dance floor, this song always delivered the goods. So happy you're back JOY-JEAN, RNB

The look on your face when they said "White boy".😄 . . . I was a senior in high school when this song came out. I'm White and attended a majority-Black high school. It was a compliment to White folks that we could be so hip.

It was a compliment. Musical genres commonly trace back different ethnic groups. It 's nothing new or bad. Eventually, other ethnic groups pick up the genre and want to play it. They were playing funk and being appreciated, it is good thing.

Have you ever heard "One Tin Soldier" by The Original Caste? You've said you like songs that tell a story, so you might really like it. While I'm here, I'll also recommend checking out Berry White, particularly "Can't Get Enough of Your Love" and "Whatever We Had We Had", and the song "Wildflower" sung by Martin Nievera. (Or the original version by Skylark)

Hi Empress, don’t feel conflicted about the “white boy” reference. They’re actually poking a little fun at themselves, knowing all the while they’re imitating music they have no claim to. A little humility in race relations (or anything) goes a long way. Those from the USA ‘70s understand the humor of it. The song is steeped in soul and funk music, whose origins came from black culture of the era. It’s yet another unique style of music that Black America has brought to the world. Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Sly Stone, Kool & the Gang--just a few of many who refined this sound.

Haha, it was all of the black, soul brothers calling him white boy, because they were shocked that he could make soul music like they did! Not a derogative thing at all, back then, but more of a badge of honor for him!😊

it happened, different times. The Righteous Brothers got their band name from a soul group that heard them and claimed they were definitely righteous, i.e. blue-eyed soul

I remember when this song first came out and I wondered about the "white boy" comment too. I thought he was a black singer. It was only until months later I learned he was white. 😆
