Wow, it's weird thinking about these lyrics now, 50 years later. I grew up listening to this song, and never knowing quite who to root for. Must say I still quite don't even as I can empathize with the passion on both sides. I'd like to think we humans are finally evolving beyond the age of "empire" and whatever violence might be needed to support and/or defend against it....
w harr, your ignorance is showing. Britain didn't outlaw the slave trade until 1807. I would explain it to you but I don't know that its worth the bother. Sufficient to say, a variety of economic, cultural, systemic, and infrastructural reasons contributed to the 13 colonies breaking from Britain.
