Wild Game Rooster of the Florida Woods. A True Free Range Survival Chicken

Here's a feral game rooster I found on some public land in Florida. He probably was not dumped, instead he probably went feral from someone's free range flock of game chickens. Feral game chickens like this are surprisingly common around Florida.

That feather on that roaster’s cape would be INCREDIBLE for tying flies.

What a magnificent specimen! I'm glad you let him be (as interesting as it would have been to see videos of you catching and taming him) because the thought of such amazing creatures fending for themselves and in fact thriving in the wild is awe-inspiring. Just looking at him casually scraping around seemingly without a care in the world I can see how predators would give him wide berth -- you don't want to upset this big guy!

There are wild flocks of gamefowl inside of Big Slough Preserve, just outside of Myakka state park. They look identical to peacomb yellow leg hatch.

You guys need chicken rendang recipe from either Malaysia or Indonesia. Try the "Rendang Ayam Pencen", literally translated as "Retired Chicken Rendang". Probably best recipe for tough flesh of these wild chicken. Think about it... Florida, Land of Retirees with best Retired Chicken Rendang 😁

Yessir. You’re not gonna find any modern breeds than can turn feral though. They got picked off too easily. Only breeds that can fly like jungle fowl are gonna be able to live wild. Which all the key west fowl are more gamey types.

My experience is that free range game chickens are just too alert and fast for coyotes. For their size they're faster than wild turkeys.

Do you know if it’s legal to trap feral chickens in Florida? Id be interested in catching some and raising them as free range homestead chickens.
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog 2 года назад
It is legal to trap them on private land where you otherwise have permission to be and so long as the birds are truly feral and not belonging to anyone. On public land, it probably makes a difference how you go about trapping them. Public land has set trapping seasons and even though wild chickens are non-native wildlife, you may have to observe the trapping regulations of the public land you are accessing. Where I was at in this video what I was attempting was probably fine, as I wasn't really setting a trap and leaving it in such a way it might catch wildlife. I was just trying to get the chicken to walk through a door like one might try to do for a stray dog found on public land. It would probably be more of an issue if I brought an actual live trap, set it, and left it.

Which breed of gamefowl would you recommend for egg production? I'm in the Florida panhandle and want a breed wild, tough and able to provide to a decent extent. So far it's looking like liege fighters might be the best bet
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog Год назад
American gamefowl would be the best. A healthy American game hen can easily do 150-200 eggs a year.

Can you recommend a good survivor chicken from a commercial hatchery?
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog Год назад
If you’re up far north, the Icelandics most hatcheries have seem legit. Otherwise, try hatchery standard or Oxford Old English.

@@Florida_Bullfrog I am in South Carolina with access to a large tract of woods. Zone 8b. Oxford Old English? Please pick one for me
@Florida_Bullfrog
@Florida_Bullfrog Год назад
Try Cackle Hatchery’s black breasted red old English gamefowl. Standard size not bantams. They’re actually American gamefowl that somewhat conform to Old English standards. Old English has actual show standards, American gamefowl on the other hand aren’t recognized as a separate breed from Old English by the poultry associations.

Poke a hole in a dry piece of corn , tie your fishing line to the corn ,, cast the corn past the chicken , reel the corn up to the chicken , once the chicken swallows the corn you can reel it in .. eazy peezy .
