Wild Harvests: Hazelnuts 

I place a old bed sheet on the ground, then give the branches a shake. Makes it easier to gather them.

FYI once shelled, around 5 mins at 180 in an oven is about right. Tip: just do a few first, watch like a hawk then do the rest, cook time is so short that environmental conditions and variation of nut can change cook time (adding 1 minute is 20% more!) not to mention different ovens I've tried 3 different ovens and they have 3 different times for cooking. They go from beautiful golden well roasted to black ash in no time, also don't trust the orangey amber light in your oven!

I have to pick mine before they are ripe when the squirrels do. If I don't I wouldn't have any.

Good video. I very much enjoyed her book "A handbook of Scotland's Trees", I learned a lot about planting trees and it is quite useful for identification too.

Did the basket get filled? LOL! I grow hazel nuts in Canada. I never fill my basket because the big fat black squirrels beat me to them most of the time.

Hi Fi. Where in the Scottish Borders are these Hazel / Cob Trees ? Can a Local source Native (Cob) Trees to Plant ? I have a *Self Seeded Hazel Tree* (it's a Single Stem about x3 Metres Tall, approx x6 Years Old. . . But no Nuts ever !!!) It also has about x8 Whips sprouting from the Root (Whips about x1 metre tall.) Question : How do I get it to produce nice big Cob like Nuts ? (It's covered in lots of Male Pollen Flowers : Catkins*) But, its never produced Nuts ? There is another older tree in a local Wood across from my Garden, it to has Catkins but never seen Nuts on it either (?) I think my Honey Bees take some Pollen off these trees, if it's a warm March Day (!) Are these Hazel's wild non Nut producing varieties?!? If Wind Pollination is the primary way, these trees are about x 700 yards from each other across a Village Road. Hope you can advise. Thanks, Village near Duns.
