Wild Horse Stallions Fight For Herd On Beach - Good Herd Behavior & Snaking Action

#thinklikeahorse #ItIsNeverTheHorsesFault This is an excellent example of wild herd behavior. Two stallions challenge each other for a herd of mares, the winner gets the herd and moves them down the beach using an action called Snaking.
If you understand herd behavior then you will learn that you don't have to listen to all the Non sense being preached in the horse world. This stallion shows dominance, stopping or preventing movement of the lower horses, shows speed and strength and his superior skills over the challenger and he earns the right to pass on his genes to next generation of horses.
So much misinformation in the horse world that if people just learned and understood horses, they would stop trying to deal with horses like "stupid humans" keep telling them to.
Read my website and you will find out more about horses than most of the so called experts in the horse world.

These kinds of videos are my favorite that you post. It's so helpful to have you walk us through actual wild horse footage, pointing out what certain behaviors mean and/or indicate. I very much appreciate you and all you do, Rick!

Hahaha stupid humans running, love that. It's beautiful to see horses being horses. You don't see that here in Belgium. People look at me like I have two heads when I say that my horse doesn't have shoes, blankets, bit or stall. She's got great big pasture with two other friends and she's damn happy

Lead stallion reminds me a lot of Mr. T. which also shows how smart Mr. T. is when it comes to herd dynamics and interacting with people; he knows when to stop and when to move. Unlike Buddy who always wants to play lol.

I hate it when people say that wild horses are dangerous.... I live near the cingotague ponies ..... And I went on a field trip for school in chinotague..... We where eating lunch and a band of horses come along ,so the teachers are like " run the ponies are dangerous " and I was the one who did move as everyone runs away .... Then a mare come over to me ( it was a mare I knew the band very well) and VERY slowly pulled out and apple making sure not to make any sudden movements and gave the horse and apple and let it sniff my hand.... The it let me search it's nose and it walked away.... The teacher yelled at me and I told her " it's not the horse that is dangerous it just stupid humans doing stupid things land scaring them." It cracks me up what the non horse people think.

I'm so glad you did this video. I watched it a couple of weeks ago. Loved the snaking, and showing dominance in this video. My gelding is quite older than the other two in pasture. I love watching him. I can sit there for hours. He is top dog, and I have seen him do snaking. Not to often though. It's so interesting, and just love sitting there watching heard interaction. I learn a great a deal about my horse. How he treats other horses, and his personality.

The only thing I disagree with you with is wearing the anti helmets rant. I rode bareback and Peaches tripped (she was galloping and weighted 1400 pounds) and I ended up head first into the hard earth. MY FAULT. But I got one hell of a concussion and mild brain bleeding and don't recall 2 hours. (Exactly what a football player can experience apparently). Plus I threw up A LOT. I don't drink alcohol (rarely) because I hate throwing up with a passion. So after that I ALWAYS WORE A HELMET OUT OF GENERAL PRINCIPLE! 3 Western riding nurse told me they were going to buy helmets after work because I looked like hell. Helmets are not a magical force fields! But my brain would rather not be rung like a bell again. I now ride a motorcycle and my full face helmet has saved me from multiple pebbles, bees, dirt, and a 6 oz sparrow at 55MPH. The sparrow died on impact and my brains bell was slightly rung again. But I maintained control of my bike did not die.

This video was published on 2015 but it is still good to watch and Rick's comments are really good on this! I love how the horses roam on the beach not letting the humans interfere in the businesses of these horses! These wild horses of North Carolina were on people's concern due to hurricane Florence coming into the area this past week where the horses live. People wanted to know if the horses would be rounded up and evacuated. The Herd Manager Meg Puckett reported that the horses have lived in the area for 500 years and that they know what to do. When she gave this report as the hurricane was approaching the coastline she stated that the horses were gathering up to move inland to higher ground. I am glad that there are other people besides Rick that can "Think Like a Horse"! As the hurricane arrived I read that the horses go into the forest for shelter and use the large Oak Trees to protect them. It is just like Rick tells us about horses being around for thousands of years and they know what to do without the need of humans interfering with them. As always...thank you Rick for all your videos and tutorials!

Awesome vid rick! No there is no lead mare but you do get a dominant mare, similar to elephants, usually the oldest mare who will also lead if the stallion is not near bye. Watching wild horses while a stallion will leave to steal more mares his lead mare will keep a second eye out on their herd. Watch some of the videos on Cloud the wild stallion and you'll see what I mean.
@ThinkLikeAHorse
@ThinkLikeAHorse 9 лет назад
Loki Agnomen Mares stay in the herd for life, males are kicked out. Cloud videos is narrated by a sensitive woman who is absolutely different than me and she see things and interprets them wrong in my opinion. I would not say that is good teachings listening to her, but the horse behavior is good.

I don't really listen to her. In England we have no true wild herds left, the only ones we get a I'mre new forest ponies and even they are owned so I can't study them. I know mares stay anyway, I just enjoyed Cloud documentaries as there is no other way I can see them act naturally unless its from a TV screen. Love your videos anyway.

These are Corolla NC horses. (: Very beautiful to see in person, and excellent way to learn about herd behavior(at a distance) indeed. However, it's illegal for those people to be that close to them... I'm surprised the rangers that keep an eye on them and make sure that no one messes with them when they are on the beach, didn't intervene when the people got too close. By law, those people can get into serious trouble if they are caught that close...

A wild lead mare does actually lead the herd. She will guide the herd, she will choose when and where to graze and where it's safe for the herd to rest. The stallion protects his herd and he follows his "family" to ensure they stick together and no one is left behind plus predators attack from the rear as it's the slowest or youngest in the back of the pack when traveling. However I'm loving your explanations of what's happening in these videos and your outlook on it. BTW my QH gelding will snake my mare (she actually belongs to him) away from any other male horses regardless of their age. It's hilarious because she's a draft.

My horse doesn't give up. Last year he went out with mares and geldings fine. At winter they get paired in their own paddocks. A 14.2hh mare and 17hh gelding were paired together. Today we put them out my horse went galloping around like a lunatic like he often does. There were about 3 mares and 2 geldings in the field. He had been out previously fine in the last with the 17hh. Today the 17hh showed complete dominance over the 14.2hh mare whilst all other horses stood away were fine. After they'd all galloped around and the big gelding had kicked out several times at my horse and my horse never retaliated. He then settled and went to eat near the mare and wanted to roll. Next thing I know the mare goes crazy and double barrels my horse twice which resulted in my horse sustaining an injury and the 17hh tried to have a go as he ran away. At this point my horse looked TERRIFIED he started pacing and although he had a huge field to run away from them he had no other horses to go and stand with that he knew (he won't go out alone) in the end I had to pull him out as the mare went and big gelding went after him again and he looked like he wanted to jump out the field. I put him in with another gelding he knows in another field and he was fine. Trouble is hell have to go out in that field or have no turnout/grass over summer. Everyone is rilled up and a lot of frustration is aimed at me I feel as my horse is highly strung but not once went to kick or harm another horse. I'm at a loss at what to do now as he's very close to being given away due to his behaviour both in and out the field and to be ridden.

Incredible footage and such informative analysis. When people resent that it is a male that runs the herd, they need to stop and think that just because the lead guy gets to mate and tell the others what to do, his life is no bed of roses by any stretch of the imagination. He has to be on guard 24/7, be willing to fight other stallions at complete risk of injury or death to himself, put himself on the front line with predators, etc. In other words, this guy can never relax and just take life easy. I don't know about anyone else, but I sure wouldn't want his job. I enjoy too much being able to kick back and sip my coffee (nod to Rick, there).

Great example of Stupid Human Behaviour, too! I lived for years up in Humboldt County, CA where there are large herds of very large Roosevelt Elk who are not in the least intimidated by puny humans. There are a couple of viewing areas where tourists can watch the elk at a distance behind a barrier. And of course, there are plenty of open uncontrolled areas where the elk could show up without warning. Always interesting when elk walk through your campsite as if they owned the place...and, of course, they do. But there's always-always!-that stupid tourist with a camera who thinks that because the animals don't run away, they must be tame and approachable, so they cross the barrier fence to get a better picture. There's always the ignorant human who thinks that, because they are deer (aka Bambi) and not lions, that they are not dangerous. And there's always the quasi-ignorant humans who think that only the bulls are aggressive. There's always the stupid human who thinks that, because he is a benign animal lover, the warning signs posted all over the place don't apply to him, since "the animals 'know' that I'm harmless and so they would never hurt me." And finally, there is the grotesquely uninformed city dweller chud who thinks it's really funny when that bull elk they're getting too close to snorts, shakes its head, stamps the ground, gives the rolling side-eye, and bugles...just before he's had enough and charges. Inevitably, every tourist season, there is some unfortunate incident. Stupid Humans.
