@@Cabbieguy78 The thing is people like to stay they are strong mentally, when in reality if you get most people alone they are mentally weak. (And I would include myself in this category). In this situation knowledge is power and most people don't know their rights, what the police can and cannot do, so they get very frightened. So when you are in a small interrogation room and have been there for 6 hours, and the police are saying you'll get 20 years, your friend has already confessed and dropped your name, so you might as well confess and do 2 years easy time in a camp - a lot of people would take that plea. They might not realise that their friend hasn't confessed (because if their friend had confessed, the police wouldn't need to keep asking you all the time) plus your mind might be racing at that time. It reminds me of being in comp school, being accused of messing around with the school computers. A group of us were called down to the headmasters office, we all knew they had no evidence on us at all so we agreed to keep quiet and we'd all get off. When they were talking to me they were coming out with "evidence" they had blatantly just made up; as they weren't computer literate and I knew a bit; I knew they were lying. This gave me all the confidence I needed to keep my mouth shut. Well unfortunately one of my friends wasn't so computer literate, believed what the headmaster was saying, and ratted us all out. It's a mind game and the police are experts at it. I work in a comprehensive school now; and if kids have misbehaved - the #1 way of getting to the bottom of it, if there's no CCTV - interrogate the boy and his friends, put the mind game on, and it is guaranteed at lease one will rat the others out, it happens every single time.

Didn't see a reply to this one but I'm sure our Peter got the right amount of financial recompense from his great mate Shaun as he wouldn't have screwed his best mate.
