I modelled a wye on my old layout (long gone) in the 90s: I was reading up and suddenly I grasped the point of why they have 'em on the prototype. After I figured out how to wire it, (it was DC of course back then; twin cab with common rail and blocks) I well remember what a joy it was to reverse the train direction on the wye and it improved the functionality and fun of the layout by a quantum leap. Good times.

That is incredible engineering. This will help with a scene on my layout that I was having a problem with a tight radius on. Another great video DJ, thank you for taking the time to make these videos.

I've seen a similar setup in a street running industrial spur. The main track runs down the middle of the road, and the spur swings all the way out the curb on one side before crossing over the main and serving an industry on the other side of the road. The crossover lets the spur track cut in between two buildings on the street in what would otherwise have been too tight of a turn for the same reasons you showed in this video.

The wye, the bridges and the associated scenery would be an amazing addition to a layout. It'd take up a lot of space on an HO layout though.

Hi DJ, Very neat drone footage of the ex-MGA / P&LE / PRR, PC, CR interchange trackage in Brownsville. The Western Maryland had the same sort of track arrangement at Cheat Jct. in West Virginia. You've seen this modeled on Roy's WVC&P, but may have not realized it was modeled after a real location. Also some of those signals are approach lit, so it maybe possible while you were filming this, the signal was dark. What's very interesting is that signal can only display 4 indications, stop, stop and proceed, restricting and slow approach. I was lucky enough to capture on 35mm film some of the last days of operations on the MGA when the MGA was still running the Super 7's in the MGA Gray, White and Red paint scheme. As they say, time marches on but not always for the best. Cheers, Rich S.

Looks to me, they put the crossover in not because the curvature was too tight, but because they didn't want to have to build another bridge/culvert structure. By crossing the left leg over the existing bridge at the angle they did, no new structure was needed. IMHO

Great video DJ! Between yourself and Danny Harmon, I learn more about US Railroading than I ever thought possible. The drone footage is fantastic and that scene with the WYE would make a real talking point but also probably help a few modellers solve an issue of a "curve too tight". Great stuff....look forward to seeing your layout progress.

Very cool DJ! I knew of diamonds and was trying not to need to incorporate any where my layout is at now but sometimes I need a crossover of sorts- I decided to use grade elevations but I never thought of diamonds for this purpose of too sharp of turns. Catasaugua PA is even worse, the LNE came across the LV and then made a 90 degree so tight that the 0-6-0's that ran the connection had blind center drivers. One of those engines is preserved at the Illinois RR Museum. If you go to Catasaugua, PA, just south of Pine St Bridge over the Lehigh River, you can see the old LNE bridge. The LV ran along the "trail" parallel to the river. The LNE turned the corner and went under Pine St just to the left of the building next to the Pine St Bridge. it then ran up to where the "Ironton Rail Trail" runs parallel to the river.

Cool!!! It just shows what railroads will do if they have to. The cost of the diamond and its maintenance must have been less that building another bridge/trestle over that joining creek. Pretty neat idea for modeling. From the shiny rails, I'm guessing that this route is still in use?

So cool to see that area. I have a friend who lives in Brownsville. There's a NS track right down the middle of a residential street over there! A coal train had to stop for someone's f-ed up parking job. So you work for CSX now... out of Newell, PA? At McKeesport, I used to pick up pipe at Dura-bond (1998 or so) and drop off boxcars of newsprint at the McKeesport newspaper. The latter was very hard to spot properly due to no clearance to hang off the car, a slight grade, and narrow doors on the paper plant. It was a question on the conductor's exam for the territory.

@@djstrains Daniel Kuttner. I started with Dave Beckermann and Ron Main in 1998. There was a big push to mark up as a conductor, then go to engine school, due to the merger with Conrail. Unfortunately my mom had an eventually fatal stroke & I had to quit to tend to her. You might know another engineer who's since passed, Mark Kuhta (RIP), or the conductor "Doc" Holliday (also RIP). Our conductor mentor was Denny Hinton. By 2000 I was back & in Yardmaster school. That was the Monongahela RR originally. It was jointly owned by the PRR, P&LE(NYC) and later the B&O. The MRY is a fascinating railroad! It dieselized late and it only had Baldwin S12 locomotives to start with. Because the MRY didn't own its own cars, they had cars from just about any railroad on it at any time. Also good to see real signals up still not those cheapo traffic lights that are being planted like weeds now. do you have a link for the picture archive that showed this in its original form? I'm having a hard time picturing where the removed double track from the bridge went with as little clearance as their is against the cut.... or was this the track that hit the diamond and went north?

What I do not get is. The bridge is a perfect 90° to the main so if the right side curve is good why could they not do the same on the left side. I noticed the used a right side turn out from the bridge. What if the would have put a Y instead.
