William Holden gives a great and utterly convincing performance. Almost unrecognisable from the younger Holden of the 1950s.

Caught the second half of this the other day on one of my movie channels. Thanks for the upload as now I can watch the first half. I disagree with the negative revies. William Holden, Ryan O'neal and Karl Malden... what's not to like. Also, that is the craziest card game I ever saw in the movies. Dangerous!

William Holden made about 74 some odd movies and was pretty darn great in all of them. He was also the highest paid actor at one time in his generation. Women loved him and Men wanted to be him.

I have a lot of respect for Roger Ebert as a writer. He gives this 3 stars, which seems about right, tho I might give it a half star more. (Dull minded IMDB users have it at 6.5, a might low, imo.) The SW scenery alone makes it worth seeing. JD Baker and Tom Skeerit are fun in early roles. Ebert likes Holden a lot in the movie, and damn right. Alcohol robbed us of him a little early. But he disses Ryan O’Neal. He’s no Montgomery Clift, but I thought he was ok in this, and Barry Lyndon is a great movie.
