What a sweet, beautiful shark. I wish we would appreciate the animal world so much more rather than kill them right off the bat. It's one thing to have to kill an animal you come upon suddenly where you are forced to defend your life because the animal is trying to kill you. From what I gather, most sharks see humans as inedible and may very well flee from them if they know what they are (which I guess in all technicality is predators, as people do sometimes fish for sharks) and only might bite them thinking they're a more palatable animal like a seal or turtle. Actually sharks don’t eat humans, most of the time sharks confuse humans with other sea creatures and most of the time they let the human go after realizing it’s not food, or you pissed off the shark too much it wants to kill you but not eat you

Ultimately, we're still guests in their ocean, and if they decide they don't like us being there then there's some pretty bad consequences. Likewise, Elk and Bears aren't always hostile, but that doesn't mean it's safe or a good idea to go trying to spend time with them.

There is a lot of science that points to plants having societies, brains, emotions, etc... I guess we just have to wait for the proof now. There must be experiments ongoing as I write this. The Russians had a big interest in this. They even managed to use plants as some sort of sound recording device. We are just starting ton understand the planet. Plants do have sense of their surroundings though, and they are much more capable then we give them credit of course - so there's no need to animalise them. I would not say them having societies though, for it is also a loaded term and people would think that they have individuals who are communicating, but they are rather having the boundary between individual and communal not existing on the level that we, animals, do. No need to add fantasies to an already magical thing that is nature :)

Emotions precede sentience. Very likely every animal has emotions - they are extremely useful. All the bogus notion that insects/lobsters have no pain is not scientific and makes no sense evolutionary. Being able to do maths is very likely uniquely human as well as many other "intelligent" things, but feeling emotions and being able to relate is wide-spread in animals. It is not impossible that single celled animals feel something of that sorts. Though ofc having a brain helps with that a lot :)

They're not being affectionate, that is anthropomorphizing. The shark is simply associating the human with pain going away, and an addictive drug-like high from the nose being rubbed. It's like letting your doctor treat you and give you drugs, that's not you being affectionate.

Animals aren't mindless killers... the same way we have great relationships with dogs, that could easily kill us, we can have with other animals too. The Dodo has also done a story on a woman who has also befriended sharks. She removes fishing hooks from them, and when she first started doing that, sharks that she didn't know started coming with fishing hooks stuck in their mouths too. So it was obvious that the first sharks had somehow communicated to other sharks that she could help them remove their hooks too. So that is definitely evidence of communication so complex that they know to go to her with that specific problem. Pretty awesome! This woman has removed over 300 hooks at the point the video was made.

@@RebeccaStout well, chimps and bonobos are the best in example (I think) what happens when you prefer either female or male leaders. Chimps are ruled by one headchimp. They are strong and big and had to handle war and survive. They go to war with their neighbors for territory. They are the closest to humans now. On the other side of the river: Bonobos are ruled by a 'council' of women. They are smaller and psysically weaker as they did not have to survive war. They are way smarter and more emphatic. They also have a better spermcount and bigger penis than any other primate including humans relative ofcourse to their size. You see, man think they can rule trough domination. This usually ends up in fear tactics and war. The council of female Bonobos found another way. They rule trough love and frankly, alot of sex. Every year there is a period where neighboring groups come together and hold a big orgy fest. They 'trade' males so there can't be incest. Males are fine with this. Some return with the group and some stay in the new group after. They also work together flawlessly. Mostly being vegetarian or bug/ant eaters, They do hunt around 2 times a year, sometimes with multiple groups. One of those hunts is just before or after 'the festival' they hunt monkeys (not apes) or small Forrest deers. Their fights and disputes are resolved by... Sex. You see, not just human females know that sex is a powerful tool. A way to get to someone's heart without needing to kill your best assets. In war you lose people, the strongest people that are unmissable for a small tribe trying to survive but in love you make people. People that are needed to make the tribe trive. Love stimulates empathy and coöparation between members. As everyone does it with everyone (they are litterly the only ones besides humans to enjoy sex without procreation in mind and use different types of stands). There is no limit on same sex and as this is the way for generations, there is no jealousy either. It's effects can be seen by evolution itself. Psysically the Bonobos are smaller and less muscular in almost every aspect. But mentally they are the strongest (and smartest) ones. Also it helps that they are with alot more than chimps. If a fight would ever break out between them (wich isn't impossible as climate change and human intervention do dry rivers faster than a fire burns a chip and that's the only borderline holding them back.). I bet the chimps attack and make the first big hit. But their tactics of war are mainly raids or hit and runs. The second time they will try they'll be dead. Chimps eat baby apes and Bonobos with their empathy will not tolerate killing of their children. I think they'll signal neighbors and chimps will be overtaken by sheer numbers lead by a council of very angry mothers. Who knows, maybe there will even be survivers they can convert (mainly females if they can find that group). Although this last piece of Versus is just a hypothetical theory. Wich group would you rather belong to? The strong and tough chimps or the empathic and peaceful Bonobos? Last thing, the orgy fest is hold at the end of the raining season wich is also when chimps start their biggest raids, mainly to abduct women for their own tribe. Kind of a war festival instead of a love festival to start a season/new year. This may indicate that they holded these 'rituals' before they were seperated around 120.000 years ago. This would make them the oldest continuing ritual/festival known on the planet still practiced today.

Agreed! When I was little I used to piss scared of sharks, specifically Great Whites, because of the movies and tv shows. I even got happy when Killer Whales, Offshore, ate them. However, when I was 6 or 7 years old, I gradually realized I was wrong and sharks are not what Hollywood made them out to be. They’re heavily misunderstood, like orca/dolphin behavior, and deserve recognition and kindness. Don’t get me wrong Killer Whales are my fav animals of all time, but sharks are a strong second. I really took a strong liking towards Great White Sharks, Lemon Sharks, and Whale Sharks. Depressing how Hollywood makes them out to be ain’t it?

There was a picture in the National Geographic magazine about 3 or 4 years ago of this (I think) Frenchman who went out in one-person boat on the ocean with a great big mutha of a Great White following him, the story behind it was every time this particular guy goes out on the ocean in his little boat this same Great White would _always_ follow him and she never attacked him, only ever followed him ... this reminds me of a cuter version of that story 😊😊😊

Apparently tiger sharks are very curious. They see anything new, they swim right up to investigate.

Most shark do that. Especially when being touched on the noses or before they attack

their eyes don't roll back. the white part you see is a protective membrane, sharks roll it up when attacking to protect their eyes.

@@fennec13 you both are right. Some sharks do roll their eyes back like the great white for example. Others sharks like the bronze whaler shark for example have a membrane.

They also roll back when they bite. Sharks are not pets. They will eat you alive. This is cute but an extreme rarity. I can't believe these comments. So... sharks are just teddy bears on the inside and are just misunderstood? WOW.

@c. O Dubhlaoich - this fortunately has been disproven in the last decade. Unfortunately underpublished, however. Both marine biologists as well as animal communicators have teamed up to tackle this question from both the hard science and meta science angle. The repeated outcome: collective communication from the sharks that they do not want to bother us, that we are too salty from a food source standpoint, and if there ever is an unprovoked attack, it is almost always out of misunderstanding and not precontemplated intent. We all need to be respectful of one another - it truly makes the difference :)

I think that is true about all things - animals, people, plants. And I think the reverse is also true.

Sharks - their brain size relative to their body weight - is actually comparable to some mammals. They are capable of learning. The myth that sharks are mindless eating machines has been dispelled. They actually eat less than you think. They can go weeks without eating. They eat three percent of their body weight a day, which isn’t much. You can get sharks to respond to some types of stimulus, such as giving a reward … they have some cognitive capacities. Not like humans, but they’re not mindless.

​@@curtissimmons2287most shark attacks are because they mistook humans for food. They usually take one bite and then leave after they realize it wasn't a seal or something. Besides, more people have actually died from vending machines than sharks.

Nope, not sentient. A wild animal that if it gets hungry enough, will have no issue of taking a few bites out of this man's hide. Animals do have excellent memories though. These particular sharks have a good memory of this diver, and at this time he is not on the menu or looking to do them harm. But cut this man's arm or leg and let the blood flow in the water, we will see if their instinct to feed overcomes their good memory of hook removal. That dude up in Alaska, forgot his name, got real close and friendly with the Kodiak brown bears. Finally, he ended up as lunch for one of them. Never underestimate and forget the power these creatures have.

Think of all the times someone gets bit and the shark let's go. They don't want to eat humans, but sometimes they make a mistake. I don't believe they are vicious creatures.

@@MBGolfer they're absolutely not vicious. They're certainly apex predators but they really don't care about divers/humans. Sure they sometimes bite us people but it's mostly to investigate what we are and whether we are good to eat (we're not, they don't like the way we taste). Most deaths by shark bites are either bc the shark drags your under and you drown or because you bleed to death. there are few more majestic experiences than encountering a shark in the wild. I love it when it happens to me (not very often, unfortunately) and I wouldn't pass it for the world.

It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Hearing about how insects can experience and even display emotions, how sharks can enjoy affection, how chimps absolutely crush humans at short-term memory gains. Everything alive on Earth today is the result of 4 billion years of successful evolution. You don't get to be a torch carrier of a legacy like that (in the wild) by being dumb. We're just barely starting to understand consciousness

Specifically, sharks may not only roll their eyes back just when they eat - it could be used as body language. Similar to how cats (including big cats) will close their eyes when content/comfortable, as it makes them vulnerable to do so in a normal situation. Tldr; it's a biological urge that can serve as a form of body langauge
