This 2-day walk was the final stage of a 6-day wild camping trip to Shetland and was the highlight of the week, taking in many remote sights on the North West Mainland. During the week I camped in my tent for 6 nights (2 in a campsite) and used buses to get around, passing through towns to pick up supplies when needed. This walk started with me rising in Hillswick, after camping on a beach, and getting two buses to Collafirth where the video starts moments after being dropped off. I climbed Ronas Hill, explored Lang Ayre and trekked to Uyea Ayre where I wild camped on the cliffs looking over a pristine beach..
I tried to include some informative details in this video to help people thinking about exploring this area, as I struggled to find any information at all on the route, and whether it was even possible to walk the planned route. Hopefully the clips of the descent to Lang Ayre, and the walk to Uyea show what the terrain looks like. The descent to Land Ayre was not as bad/dangerous as I was lead to believe, with only a small rope section to get you down the last few metres. I now believe this is the only way to get to Lang Ayre on foot, as I explored the length of the beach and never saw another entry/exit point.
I walked approximately 24km total with a 20kg starting pack and it took me 9 hours to get from the bus drop-off to Uyea. However, I image most people doing a day trip will drive up to the Collafirth masts car park(cutting off the first hour) and start there, and will be walking with little weight, so visiting Lang Ayre only would be a lot quicker.
Note - Shetland is very exposed and I would advise on ensuring you check the weather and plan correctly when undertaking remote walks like this. The phone signal is poor and the nearest road can be 6km away.
I think I pronounced 'Uyea' many different ways during this video. If any Shetlanders can let us all know how to pronounce it please comment.
If you are planning on doing this solo and have questions on the route and bus timings then I am happy to help.
I have a lot more Shetland footage so subscribe to get notifications on the next videos.
