I think the name may have something to do with thylacines.
@mcmacmcgee
@mcmacmcgee 2 года назад
It's called a tiger because they're quite large (3kg+) compared to other species in Australia (two species around 1kg, one around 500g).

Such an interesting animal! Isn’t it one of the thylacine’s closest living relatives?
@Eriorguez

Thylacines seem to be the earliest diverging dasyuromorphs, so these, devils and numbats are equally as closely related to them.

I've only ever seen 1, was a few months ago during the early day's of the last floods but was sadly dead on the side of the road. After seeing it I come to find there are meant to be none on mainland Australia? This one was black as silk and white spots to match.

@@Nigel_BC Google says they're near threatened. I'd say there's more of them out there than we think. It's already pretty hard to find cats in the wild, and they're absolutely everywhere.

The West Australian Numbat is one the extinct thylacine's closest relatives. They even have stripes on their backs 🤠
@NannupTiger
@NannupTiger Год назад
Crap! Just because they have stripes doesn't mean they are closely related, we also have barred (striped) bandicoots. The numbat is also called the banded ant eater, it is nothing like the carnivorous tiger or devil, they are only close in the fact that they are marsupials.
@scytheraptor4546
@scytheraptor4546 Год назад
@@NannupTiger please do more research… of course it’s “nothing like the thylacine” - closer relatives have all been killed. The numbat’s evolutionary branch is the closest to the thylacine’s, so it’s the best we’ve got.
@NannupTiger

@@scytheraptor4546 ? The numbat is unlike any other marsupial and it lacks a pouch..
@jacklynbrown1768
@jacklynbrown1768 10 месяцев назад
@@NannupTigermarsupial quite literally along the lines means "pouched mammals" so then that would mean the animal you're talking about isn't a marsupial
@NannupTiger
@NannupTiger 10 месяцев назад
@@jacklynbrown1768 Of course the numbat is a marsupial. That is one of the most fascinating things about them, is that the female lacks a pouch. Australia has some interesting ancient animals. The echidna & the platypus are egg laying mammals that feed their young on milk once the egg hatches. They are called monotremes.

I'm not from Australia but I'm guessing alot of supposed Thylacine sightings are really just these little bundles cuteness. In America we have angry, disease ridden Opossums. If Thylacines are still alive somewhere, good on them, but I still think most sightings are these little guys
@Cyanbirdie
@Cyanbirdie 5 лет назад
I've lived in Tasmania my entire life and I agree. I also think that many sightings were that of European red foxes. I'm quite fond of opossums.. I think they're pretty incredible marsupials. They're immune to rabies and are very timid unless threatened. Like the Thylacine, I feel like these creatures are very misunderstood.
