They were so lucky to have that pipe nearby. All apartments, at a certain height, without an outdoor fire escape should have those fire ladders that you can keep in the apartment.

If you have done a few of these circuits before, you'll probably know right away that j2 and j3 are one and the same junction because a 0-ohm wire unites them. Not all newbs see that right away though so I incorporate the dummy resistor to 1) visually demonstrate the logic of uniting the junctions separated by a wire, 2) make the translation from the given circuit to the first redraw crystal clear, and 3) highlight the assumption we're making about the resistance of our wire, which is simply not true in the real world. Looked like a utility pipe. In the color code for utilities, yellow usually is flammable liquids and gases. Probably the fuel line for a rooftop generator. Darkly funny when you consider, these kids were saved from the fire by a gas pipe.
Im thinking every sky scraper needs it. After 9/11 it has been on my mind to have rappelling cables on roof tops per row of windows or one per stacked layout.

I would encourage those living in high places like this to get a retractable escape ladder in case this ever happens to you. You can find it online on amazon or ebay and it's easy to deploy. God bless those kids and thank God there happened to be a pipe there.
My building has sprinklers in all apartments.. (which is kinda troubling since one is right over my bed) and they got fire extinguishers everywhere.. a fire wouldn't make it far in this building but you might get wet though. I don't think a ladder would be helpful up here.

Youd be surprised what you could do with an adrenaline rush, you get incredible strength. I remember once one of my kittens crawled under my huge timber drawers and tried to come out the front through the gap, but the gap was too small and the kittens neck got stuck, it began screaming and crying and i couldnt push it back under when i did it cried louder, it was choking and wheezing. So i just grabbed the bottom of my drawers (also it had a tv on top of it), and lifted and it was sooo soooo heavy but somehow I could lift it high enough, but the damn kitten WOULDNT MOVE OUT, so, I then had to hold the huge timber drawers with ONE hand and keep holding it for 5 seconds as I grabbed the kitten and threw it to safety. Keep in mind im a tiny, not muscular at all woman, ive tried lifting those drawers before when I’ve had to move rooms and i couldnt lift it an inch, Ive never even been able to push it. The first teen that comes out the window is a girl and she looks a bit large, trust me it is very very VERY hard to hold yourself up by your hands when you have even a bit of weight, its basically impossible. But I’m very certain she could do it because she was high af on adrenaline, she even was able to hold onto the pipe with one hand and grab the boys hand with her other and swing him onto the pipe.

@@CJDcow generally 5-6 story buildings will have fire escapes. High rises have elevators and multiple stairwells. NYCHA buildings generally don’t have fire escapes. Would help if fore extinguishers were required in all apartments by law.

@@miragaiamaia8966 Fires can happen anywhere, but in a house there are usually windows in every room and it usually 1 or 2 stories not 10, much higher chance of actually getting out without killing yourself.
Amazing what you can do under pressure. At this point, the height meant nothing to them, it's all adrenaline. Glad they acted on that adrenaline and are now safe. The smoke it's what kills people first, usually not the fire itself. I can't imagine how hard it was for them to even breathe
I completely agree with you. Fear and panic will only cause you to lose your head and possibly cost you your life. It’s hard to do in a moment like that but if it’s possible, try to remain as calm as you can be. I pray for every single person involved those kids were extremely brave! 🙏🏽 + ❤️

There is a fire exit in the hallway but the fire prevented them from getting out the door. At least in prewar apts. you have two modes of escape, the stairwell or your own fire escape outside your window. Everyone should have at least at least one ABC fire extinguisher at home.
This reminds me of the 10 year old who dropped his 3 year old brother from the window of a burning apartment and he then jumped. A crowd of men below caught both of them. The mother had gone out and left them locked inside the apartment. The survival spirit is strong. God bless

This is why it's important to stay in "decent" shape. Those kids didn't have to think very hard to know that pipe was there only escape! Meanwhile I know adults who couldn't do that to save their life!
Because a lot of adults spend their days eating trash food, sitting on their a in an office job, driving everywhere all lazy and then they expect 5 days at the gym for 2 hours is gonna fix all that. Some kids are in good shape simply bc they are physically active and aren't obsessed with eating. That's true for most house fires, but not all. Considering they were fully conscious but already had serious burns, this fire was probably fast/strong enough to kill through burning instead of smoke inhalation.

Incredibly strong kids! They most likely were just sleeping (at 7am), or had JUST woken up to this, having to rescue themselves by climbing out a 4th story building, and scaling down the pipe, burns, and all. That’s incredible strength, and determination. God protected them. May God bless the gentleman who passed, the woman fighting in the hospital, and the two kids. If that E bike was the cause of the fire, then I hope they get very highly compensated; although we all know no amount of money makes up for the loss of a loved one. I know this first hand after losing my Dad to a contractor company’s negligence.
