Charlie Smith needed a haircut. But social distancing demanded by the coronavirus kept the 58-year-old away from his usual barbershops near his home in Frederick, Md.
So, Mr. Smith grabbed some old electric clippers, hauled a full-length mirror into his bathroom and bent over the bathtub.
“I just started clipping at it until it looked something like a haircut,” he said.
Problems soon emerged. Mr. Smith discovered that he couldn’t see his progress without wearing his glasses, but couldn’t cut his hair while his frames sat on his head. So he frequently stopped and started, adding and removing them. Cutting the top of his head proved trickier. He got some cuticle scissors and started snipping, but ended up nicking several fingers.
The world is beginning to embrace the do-it-yourself haircut. The results are mixed.
Thousands of salons across the country have been ordered closed. Those in need of personal grooming are grabbing beard trimmers, kitchen shears or other tools. Some consult RU-vid videos for guidance, while others call in spouses to minimize the damage of a homespun haircut gone wrong. Celebrity hairstylists are now offering virtual styling lessons. On social media, some posts warn of what is coming: “We’re exactly 3 weeks away from knowing everyone’s true hair color,” one widely shared social-media meme reads.
Janell M. Hickman, a freelance beauty writer, asked her fiancé to do the job. They went to the bathroom one recent evening, and she advised him to leave the top of her hair alone, but to shorten the sides, wanting a tapered look, but not too tapered. The cut took about 45 minutes, whereas a salon cut might take 25.
“I kept making him pause in between so I could look in the mirror and make sure he wasn’t going crazy,” Ms. Hickman says.
A few people are resigned to the fact that haircuts will be functional, if perhaps not stylish, for the foreseeable future. In Seattle, Ms. Schuldt says her husband and young son will soon need haircuts, so she may be forced to give them both a trim.
“We’re going to have home cuts sweeping the country,” she says. “In three months, everyone is going to have a bowl cut or a mullet. Those are the two options when you cut your own hair.”
