In this video I embark on a solo two-week wilderness canoe-camping trip through the boreal forest surrounding the Berens River. This was a demanding 170km journey through remote terrain in Manitoba, Canada. During this trip I was able to apply bushcraft skills, including fire lighting, natural navigation and foraging. It was a fantastic experience and I'm very happy to be able to share video of the trip with you. In this video, which forms the first part, I arrive on Family Lake by float plane then start my journey by finding the outflow into Night Owl Lake, where I camp for the first night. This sets me up for the epic journey that's about the take place....

I just don’t understand why Paul doesn’t have 100,000+ subscribers. Class guy and quality videos.

Thanks for the kind words John. I think the simple answer to your question is the RU-vid algorithm. Unlike the more popular channels, I don't publish videos every week. It seems this makes a big difference to visibility. But yes, it would be nice to be able to show these videos to a wider audience. Thanks for your support. It's much appreciated.

Besides Paul Kirtley's already answered I think he didn't monetize his channel because I haven't noticed any breaking in advertisement. And youtube (Google) likes to make money from AdWords or youtube monetized channels. So, based on this particularly level of algorithm, youtube will not put this channel on the top of the list by keyword search, or on the recommended clips suggestions. And indeed, this channel deserves a lot more subscribers.
@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 4 года назад
@@citizenx1602 Thanks for your positive words too. My channel is monetised but I don't stick ads in the middle of videos. I really don't like it when I watch videos and I try to avoid it on mine. Beginning and end is OK though, I think.

My opinion only, the Bushcraft community has exploded in the UK over the last few years and Paul and Ray have actually spoken very poorly about people that have posted on youtube which is not good. Perhaps those people aren't doing things "quite right" but the masses just like to see what real life people get up to and actually learn more from their failings and kit reviews. Paul Kirtley missed the boat in terms of youtube and is trying to catch up but thanks for your postings. 46k subscribers for Paul is great, funky prepper has 55k subscribers and hardly posts any videos - go figure ?? - is it that funkys content is more aligned to the bushcraft community explosion ??

Paul, I've just stumbled across part 1 of Berens River bushcraft camping trip and seems that the timing of my intro to your gifts to your viewers could not have been better. I am on a bit of a difficult path which I MUST put myself through if I intend to survive. I have spent a lot of time in the wilderness, realize it is my best hope for success and needed it represented in a quiet, intelligent, and respectful manner in order to truly remember and get back to the wander that awaits my reawakening. Excuse my vagueness, but please accept my heartfelt appreciation for your inspiration. You will be a solid link to my success. That much I can easily glean from this introduction to you. Thank you so much for your help. It truly means everything to me an those who actually care for me. All my best to you and yours.

On my experience nothing beats a multi day trip in a canoe, the changing vistas, the calming rhythm of paddling and the soulful call of the Loon. The un-interrupted evening routine of fire lighting and cooking food in that timeless way, the womblike comfort of the tent and journey to well deserved and satisfying sleep with dreams of adventure yet to come. Great job Paul.

Wow... just wow... the trash left behind at that first site. Very sad to see. I love my solo canoe trips into the BWCA, Quetico...etc... I have never have seen anything like that before when canoe tripping. Sure once in a while I will find something that I suspect was truly forgotten and overlooked and left behind... but nothing like that island. Just wow.

Indeed. Wow. You'll have noticed I was shocked. It's certainly an outlier, especially so far from a road. I was shocked to see this so far out. There was a bit of mess at the other end of the river too but I'm thankful the majority of the route was pretty much untouched. Warm regards, Paul

Hi Paul! I’ve only had the time to watch the first 10 mins this morning but thoroughly enjoyed it so far! People forget that you recording this trip is a large under taking on your behalf. Not to mention the editing of 12 days of footage after, so thank you for bringing us along! Hey Tom, it's good to hear from you chap. I'm glad you have enjoyed what you've seen so far. I'm pleased you also appreciate the additional effort to film a trip such as this. I can't say I always got it right - too much wind noise and shaky camera in places, as well as the battery dying in a few places that proved inconvenient timing. It's good you appreciate the effort though and I think I do just about manage to convey the spirit of the land I was travelling through, as well as my thought processes around my decisions on the move (you'll see more of the latter in episode 2). I hope all is going well for you. From here it seems you are going from strength to strength. I'm a big admirer of your diligence and work ethic Tom. Keep it up. Warm regards, Paul.

I find it funny watching canoeing video's like this because where i live all the water ways are full of saltwater crocs and you would be mad to do this. If I'm lucky enough to do this one day it would take me a few days to relax I think. I can't understand why people don't take there rubbish with them, i can understand we miss stuff every now and then but sometimes it is clearly deliberate. Love watching your videos Paul, thanks for sharing.
@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 4 года назад
Hi Justin, it's good to hear from you. Understood re the saltwater crocs. There are things I do all the time at home in the UK but would not do in bear country. I get into good bear country habits in Canada then when I get home I literally flinch when others do things I've just trained myself out of. It does take a few days to adjust. Similarly, when in Australia, even in suburban areas in the south, you have to break some habits that don't matter in the UK or Europe. I don't get the deliberate leaving of large quantities of trash either. Anyway, I'm glad you feel the same way. Thanks for your kind words about my vids and I hope you enjoy the next instalment. Cheers, Paul

Hope you enjoyed your Canadian trip. I grew up in N.E. Saskatchewan around the big northern lakes and rivers. It is beautiful, isn’t it. Looks like you landed at a fishing camp that is re-used each year. It is ideal for net fishing. There is no possible excuse for the condition it was left in. Just goes to show that bad behaviour can be exposed to the world no matter how remotely it is hidden.

Paul Kirtley you will want to add mosquito control to your kit. The bugs are not always terrible but there is a lot of water in the north which can breed some pretty big clouds of hungry mosquitoes at times. When the trees all get short, “little sticks”, I find myself looking for a rock or hill because it seems like you can almost see over the vegetation...if only you were a foot taller. It is a strange sensation. Will be an interesting trip.

Nice one Paul, looking forward to this series. I really enjoy how you share all the realities of a trip like this, and not only the good moments. Specifically, the anxiety felt as soon as you're dropped off in the middle of the wilderness. I'm sure others would feel that same thing, which could be intimidating, but hearing it from you will make others aware of it, anticipate it, and manage it better. Can't wait for episode 2.

Hi Patrick, thanks for your comments. I'm glad you appreciated my approach to this video. I do try to portray my feelings and perspectives in as direct a way as possible. I have no interest in projecting some sort of image on these videos. It's not why I make them. I'm motivated to help people undertake their own adventures by sharing honest perspectives and real experiences. Epsiode 2 (which IMHO is better than episode 1) will be out this Thursday (2nd Jan). Warm regards, Paul

I tell people on my channel if you can find that and get your hands on white Birch bark you're golden. The tent set up was perfect like you said if it rains you can take down everything underneath your tarp and keep your gear dry and take the tarp down last. I love and enjoy watching all your videos very informative thank you for that.

Great video! Too bad about the garbage site. It could be a mess left by outfitters but more probably it was a 'party' site from one of the northern communities. Both Little Grand Rapids and Pauingassi are 'dry' community meaning that no alcohol is allowed. It has been my experience that dry communities often have an established site (usually within a day's travel by motor boat) where folks can congregate outside the community to have an overnight or multi-day party. It is an unfortunate reality of the north. Good on you for showing it, many would have omitted that segment to show a more pristine trip.

Found you through TA outdoors and I gotta say that you are much underappreciated. You seem so knowledgeable, the content is well-edited and I can't understand why your following isn't greater than it is. I subbed and I am looking forward to learning more from you. Thank you for posting! Side-note: I just learned about Labrador tea from a recent trip with Bushcraft Denmark's Jesper Hede, in Danish it is called "Greenland mail" (loosely translated), because of the shape of the leaves. They sorta resemble small canoes and since the population of Greenland formerly got their mail delivered by canoe it was named thus.

The irony is that sometimes on the less traveled routes, you will actually find MORE garbage. I find a lot of the canoe routes in Ontario get maintained by volunteers and enthusiasts who generally out number those who disrespect nature, and leave a site cleaner than when they found it. It's always disappointing though when you find a site trashed like that.

Given the location of where he found the garbage I'm guessing its the local native Indian settlement. That amount of refuse was not canoed in by outsiders. It would make sense that it was used as a fish camp & harvest area. The native village is somewhat isolated with its supplies primarily replenished during the winter by trucks using ice roads when the lakes & rivers are frozen so any large amount of refuse would be coming from the village.

Nice trip and knowledge, shame about the trash and I would have to move on from a wilderness area that had been violated like that too ... like others have mentioned, I appreciate the effort involved in filming and then editing the video as the prep and setup and then editing probably take as long as the trip itself ! Great content and it’s cool to be brought along on your trip with you. Just wondering if next time, bushcraft skills can be brought together with modern equipment (like your canoe) with a stove that requires much less Fuel and effort, (and impact on the environment) like the Firebox stove or the nano version ? A combination of the two is very powerful ... and pls check out the Boreal 21 saw from Agawa Canyon when the Bhaco Laplander struggles ;)

The nod of approval as that steak went in :) (did you nearly melt your camera at 1 point? Those flames looked mighty close!) Great part 1 Paul, hope part 2 isn't too far behind. @@PaulKirtley Thanks Paul, we've watched and learn't a lot from your Spey video's, which is something we're keen to try. Only problem is we have an inflatable canoe so not sure if it's a dangerous idea or not. It's a pretty robust unit as far as they go but will do a little more research on the route before we decide anything. Failing that we will look at trying to find ajoining loch's suitable for a multi day trip. Thanks for the reply, appreciate your time :)
@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 4 года назад
@@GarethZoeWildcamps The inflatable canoe will be safer for you on a river than a big loch. But either way, get good buoyancy aids and wear them all the time. Take a ditch kit of spare warm clothes in a dry bag (it is Scotland after all). If you can, get on a white water safety and rescue course. It will give a very good idea of what to do with yourself if (or when) you fall out in moving water.
